TSMC Beats Samsung For NVIDIA's Pascal GPU - Confirmed to Feature 16GB of HBM2

1. TSMC will manufacture NVIDIA's Pascal GPU - not Samsung

Nvidia has selected Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) as its next-gen GPU manufacturer. Previously, Samsung Electronics competed with TSMC to win a contract to produce the Pascal GPU. Nvidia is the world's largest GPU vendor, the biggest players in the industry that turns over 5 to 6 trillion won each year.

According to industry sources on Sept. 15, Nvidia decided to let TSMC mass produce the Pascal GPU, which is scheduled to be released next year, using the production process of 16-nm FinFETs. Some in the industry predicted that both Samsung and TSMC would mass produce the Pascal GPU, but the U.S. firm chose only the Taiwanese firm in the end. Since the two foundries have different manufacturing process of 16-nm FinFETs, the U.S. tech company selected the world's largest foundry for product consistency.

The reason for Samsung's determination to win the contract for the Pascal GPU lies in the fact that Nvidia's new GPU is highly likely to mark a milestone in the next-gen graphic market.

Experts are saying that Samsung's failure to obtain the contract is mainly attributable to its lack of experience. The fact that the Korean tech giant has become TSMC's rival only two years after it started to produce GPUs itself is considered to have special meaning at the moment.

So it looks like both AMD and NVIDIA will be getting their orders from TSMC... Interesting...

I think this is quite a shame because this doesn't allow us to see the capabilities of Samsung's GPUs, and to see how it might have performed in comparison to TSMC's, which would have been implemented into AMD's GPUs. Possibly making that rivalry between AMD and NVIDIA a little bit fiercer.

2. NVIDIA's Pascal confirmed to feature 16GB of HBM2 VRAM

NVIDIA has their GTC conference being held in Japan on 18th September 2015 and have already released some material in regards to the new announcements that will be made at the graphics focused event. While not much in details in regards to specific architecture specifications or features, the presentation does show some new details about the NVIDIA Pascal GPU. As we already know, NVIDIA Pascal GPU will feature Mixed Precision, 3D Memory integration and NVLINK. The new details show that the top of the line NVIDIA Pascal (Single chip) card will feature up to 16 GB HBM2 VRAM that will deliver up to 1 TB/s bandwidth. More details about Pascal are expected to be revealed at the conference.

I know WCCFTech isn't the most reliable site, but this looks legitimate. The 18th of September can't come soon enough, and I'm excited what NVIDIA will reveal at the conference. Although I do wonder what AMD has planned in response. Should be very nice!

Um, Who really needs 16 GBs of VRAM? I'm doing just fine with 1 GB.

16GBs of 1024BG/s VRAM m8.

 

Compare that to the current 512BG/s achieved by HBM(1) in the Fury X. That's fast. 

 

All about 3DVR and 4k gaming.

@ 14nm both AMD and Nvidia should really merge their mobile and desktop GPUs into one line (and its fine to skip the top end ones for mobile).

 

The gap between mobile and desktop gpu`s shrinks fast if you focus on efficiency just a bit.

 

 

and AMD should fix their retarded naming scheme - make it easier to GET, like nvidias

Agreed, we will need a lot more for VR. It's the next big thing in PC gaming.

Also, running multiple displays (3 or 6) requires a lot of VRAM for modern AAA games. :)

nVidia's naming scheme is more retarded... AMD's is easier.

 

x60 series: mid-low

x70 series: mid

x80 series: mid-high

x90 series: high

 

With nvidia it changes...

 

750 series: mid low

760-70: mid high

780/titan series: high-enthusiast...

 

While for 900 series is:

 

950: mid

960: mid high

970-80: high

980 ti / titan: enthusiast.

This is interesting, I'd have quite liked to have seen Samsung make it, but I suppose experience wins over enthusiasm. Plus samsungs foundries have mainly been making more simple mobile chips, nothing on this massive scale from what I can tell, so there's no idea if they could cope with the detail of it.

There will definitely not be any yield problems for either AMD or Nvidia at 16nm, and definitely not any delays or inventory issues.

I think with 1TB/s bandwith and 16 gigabytes of Vram that truly is the perfect card for single card multi monitor 4K. Also VR support will be better with higher Vram support and faster transfer speeds. I just hope AMD has the same or better then Nvidia and is cheaper so it will have to make Nvidia lower there prices.

Um, Who really needs 16 GBs of VRAM? I'm doing just fine with 1 GB.

I just hope the flagship card (that makes sense) comes with 6 or 8gb, 4gb are fine but they won't be forever and we should really be seeing a steady increase if it's possible. Hipefully amd has a good answer, too

I've been saying this for quite a while now, don't expect Pascal for desktop to be released soon; Tesla accelerators will be a priority for nVidia

Borderless displays. Heard of them? It's no longer 2005 where we have 2" white plastic borders...

 

How about you or any of the people agreeing with you link me to a single bezelless display?

 

And i dont mean flat glass with the bezel hidden beneath. Or 1" bezel counting as "no bezel".

 

If you gona make a 6 monitor setup - please show me the monitor that has NO bezel on the sides, top and bottom - so i can make their pixels touch.
