One can buy a .50 BMG in the US at the age of 18, provided you live in a state that isn't trying to disarm citizens.

Come Bloody Angel

Break off your chains

And look what I've found in the dirt.

Why did you come to this world?

Everybody turns to dust.

They can be fored from the shoulder, so long as it's not a Barrett M107 or M82A1/A3, with relative ease. Probably hurts less that an HK91.

That's the point. A gun isn't a toy. It is an instrument of death. It isn't made to have fun, it's made for killing. One should only have a gun if you are able and willing to use it on adequate circumstances. So yeah, .308 knocks people down.

I'm pretty sure all of us here know that.

That's like saying a knife is an instrument of death, because it can cut people.  It's a tool.

Actually, it's made for shooting.  You say it's made for killing, but what does that say about the many people involved in competitive & recreational shooting?  Again, it's a tool, and how one uses a tool defines it.  It can be for fun, so long as you respect it.

Also the Sar-9 has officially passed NATO testing and is on par to the venerable Glock 17 and CZ-75 in reliability as per all standardized testing.  The Turkish HK/Glock hybrid is a success. Who'd have thought?  Image result for Sar 9

I'm not gonna start an argument with you, I'm just pointing it out. I think i know why, I've seen a few (actually just one) long long ball club shooters (none who do very well mind you) mount it backwards, but i'm curious... why do you have it setup that way? I've never asked anyone outright why they feel that is the correct orientation.

Of all the meaningful long range matches (PRS, Club group shoots, FT-R, etc) i've been to, no one mounts their bi-pods like that.

It's more advantageous outside of the range. The legs don't get caught up in brush when hunting. My grip on the rifle is not impeded, and horizonally gripping the bipod is as comfortable to me as gripping the hand guard, moreso after a mag dump. I can deploy it quickly.

And there isn't a strict correct or incorrect.

I genuinely don't care about match shooter or gun club opinions. Most of those people don't give consideration to what's advantageous over the longer term, outside a short shooting session.

That's mostly true. In competitive shooting we're considering the accuracy, stability, and repeatability of the rifle system in a 2 minute (or less) window of fire. being rock solid is paramount. We wouldn't use a bipod for any other reason but to elevate the barrel and put forward pressure on the buttpad putting pre-load on the rifle when prone or on a bench (and even then, many prefer to use shooting bags). using it as a handguard extension would be like mounting a leaf spring there instead. bouncy. not conducive to accurate fire. It's just something folks like myself who chase the smallest group sizes or first round impacts on steel just don't quite fully grasp. I can't say that i'd put a bipod on my SBR though, even if it a short range system (up to 500 yards or so). Like you said, bipod legs get hung up in branches and crap, and from what i've found it doesn't matter which way you mount the things. nature finds a way to snag into it. I'm very minimalist when it comes to a woods-rifle.

Thanks for your insight.

Haven't tested the grip quite yet, but the bipod feels about as secure as the hand guard on the M&P15.

The cheap, cheap hand guard of the M&P15.

Stability in suppressive fire. Also, weight to mitigate the muzzle climb of this prick of a Bushmaster.
