Any suggestions on a good .22 LR rifle under $200? I was thinking of the Savage Arms Stevens Model 300 (long title!), since A friend has one and I really like it. Are there any better ones for the price? It's around $165.

I have a Marlin 795.  They go for about $160 new and are more accurate than a Ruger 10/22 out of the box.  The Ruger is overpriced and you have to spend a small fortune in "accessories" to make it a good shooter.

Ooooo... I've heard good things about Marlins. And I'm not big into aftermarket stuff, I just want a rifle that shoots well out of the box, so that sounds good.

Wow. That is super simple. I'd love a semi-auto, but bolt actions have such a satisfying feel... I love mechanical metally stuff.

My uncle has some .22 bolt action Savage rimfire rifle. I don't know what it's called but it's really good. He got it for 150 USD new.

Yeah. The other one I really like is the Savage Arms Steven's Model 300. A friend has one, they're awesome little rifles. But they seem to be out of stock so I guess they're an older model. So it's now a Savage MkII F vs a Marlin 795. Basically bolt vs semi-auto.

In soviet New York, you only had to sign 1 paper, and wait for the dude to make sure you weren't featured on the front cover of borderlands, nor going to eat people's babies.

If it the same where I live then all you fill out is the front side of the first sheet of paper and then sign and date on the back, the rest the people at the store fill out.

I will admit I had to fill out the form 3 times once as the first time I did the numbers for my height side by side and they wanted it FT on top and IN on bottom.

Second time I had a total brain fart and dated it 2007 rather than 2017.

That is one reason I like stores that have you fill out the form electronically since if you make a typo you have a chance to correct it.

When I bought my last gun, the store used e-forms, too.  It's far more preferable.

Noice, so it shouldn't be too tricky.

The e-form is just a series of questions like "are you a bad guy"?, "are you buying for a bad guy?", "are you sure you aren't a bad guy?". Pretty easy. The only thing I had to sign in paper the last time I picked something up at a store was the receipt / ownership papers. But that's for the Great State of Minnesota.

Speaking of the .22s, I was offered a High Tower 90/22 a while back for my Auto Ordnance M1 Carbine reproduction (That ended up going for 800). The HT 90/22 was some weird-ass 10/22 in a P90-style chassis.

Huh. Those look kind of cool, but not for a .22, I like the "normal" rifle type. Speaking of which, I may be going with a 10/22 after all. My older brother doesn't like Savage Arms much, so he's been telling me about how good the 10/22 is and how it lasts forever and all this stuff. So I'm going to try his one out when I get back from vacay (he has the take-down model, I'd go for a wood stock carbine). Looking in to it more, it does have a wide range of replacement parts (lol, you could build a 10/22 without ever buying a single part from Ruger), and the Magpul something or other hunter system stock does look pretty dope.

  • 1 month later...

Finally got my rebate for my Smith and Wesson Shield today.

I choose the 2 mags, 2 boxes of ammo and the reloader vs the $75 check.

Both mags were 8 round mags, which I prefer, but I can see others wanting one or both to be 7 round mags as those sit more flush with the grip.

Ammo was 2 boxes Hornady Critical Defense (25 rounds each).

Reloader was a Caldwell reloader and I found it to be junk.

Thing was awkward and much slower than handloading and I just threw it in the trash.

The two mags on the left are the new ones I just got today.

Figured I'd take a pic of them next to a couple other mags I have where I'd filled in the S&W logo and ammo counter.

You take really good care of your mags. I couldn't tell the mags apart.

Do you oil your mags every time you go out?

It's a beautiful firearm. It's so small, but packs soooo much punch. (Poor underrated 9MM)

I'm sure you know this, but you can switch the side the magazine release is on if you wanted. It's one of the awesome features of that gun. Near perfect ambidexterity.

I give my mags a quick wipe with a slightly oily used rag after a trip to the range and I disassemble and clean the insides periodically (after about 4-6 sessions)

Sounds like a strong maintainence routine.

I have this old Vietnam field manual that talks about keeping your magazines just lightly oiled.

That or it's the paper from some WW1 1911 pistol mag pouches.

Although not a gun itself, I feel like I should share the exciting new updates to Surefire's weapon light lineup. They appear to have finally gotten off their asses and done some much needed updates! Woot Woot.

First and most exciting (to me at least) is the new M600DF Scout light. The old M600U was 600 lumens and not really keeping up with the much cheaper Streamlight Rail Mount 2 with 1000 lumens at about $100. But the new Surefire M600DF is 1500 lumens of eye burning power! The DF stands for "Dual Fuel" as it accepts both 18650 batteries or two CR123As. It maintains compatibility with all other Scout accessories and mounts, so if you have Scout accessories already, you're good to go. I'm super excited to pick one of these up for my latest AR. You simply cannot have enough light IMHO.

Surefire_Scout_1500lumens_07-675x450.jpg

Next is the new M300C, a 500 lumen single cell Scout light. If space is an issue, the M300 was kinda the go to rifle light before, now they just upgraded the emitter to 500 lumens. For a subgun or SBR, this is a great option. Again it retains all compatibility with previous Scout accessories.

surefire-m300c-300-lumen-scout-light-wit

As far as pistol lights go, the X300U is no longer going to be the king, the new XH35 is similar form factor but 1000 lumens. Unfortunately, word has it, that it will not fit into holsters designed for the X300 line. Dang. But it's now multi mode, with a strobe mode, 300 lumen low, and 1000 lumen high mode. I'm really not in the market for a full size pistol light, but if I was, this slightly tops out the Streamlight TLR-HL, although at an assumed higher price tag.

Surefire_XH35_02-675x450.jpg

Last but not least is the XC1-B. I've been a user of the XC-1 for about a year and have really liked it, but had some problems. I went through three XC-1s with parasitic battery drain issues before I got one that works. Surefire has reportedly solved that problem, upgraded the switching so that you can activate constant on with one hand, and upgraded the emitter from 200 lumens to 300 lumens. It will also fit in all holsters that are made for the original XC1. Interestingly, there only way to tell an original XC1 from an XC1-B is the switching. They claim that the battery compartment cover is new as well, but appears to be the same one I got when I recieved my latest XC1 from Surefire after my problems, however mine has the original XC1 switching. Anywho, it's a nice update nonetheless.

img_4803.jpg

Also noteworthy is the EDCL2-T and EDCL1-T lights. These are new additions to the lineup with the old "gas pedal" switch type, light press for low and hard press for high. The EDCL1-T is a single CR123A with 5/500 lumen modes, while the EDCL2-T is a 2x CR123A light with 5/1200 lumen modes, unfortunately it is not cut to accept the larger and more energy dense 18650 cells. I'm a bit of a flashaholic so I will likely pick up both of these as well.

I admit that all of my weapon lights are Surefire. Although before they announced an update to the M600, I was about to buy a Streamlight.

I'm not a hater of other brands, and others have some very compelling options. It's just exciting to see Surefire FINALLY get off it's ass and update their weapon light lineup a bit.
