I know I'm gonna get heat for this, but you could get away with a good AMD APU now a graphics card would be preferred but before we can suggest stuff we need a budget

The pentium is not a good choice the AMD X4 860K performs much much better and has a good OC thresh hold.

I'd suggest an APU like he said. For an htpc it's probably one of the best options out there.

This one is only 20$ more but it is superior and it has a graphics card but we can forget the graphics card if you want and we can't go with a fancy AMD APU with a built graphics GPU

This link will show you the PC I picked out for you I picked out all the components and btw it is an ITX computer so it is small and compact and will fit perfectly in with an HTPC set up

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/LvBdVn

comes out to 461.62$

Now if you subtract the graphics card and the x4 860k from the list I showed you and replace them with AMD's super powerful A10 7850k you get a GPU built into the processor and this is I think their best model for 129.99 so if you use  the PC with the graphics card on the PC list I made you  it comes out to around 462$ but if you don't use the graphics card and instead of the x4 860k you use the A10 7850k it is 375$ for the whole PC now that's a pretty damn good deal and you can probably do anything you want with this and it includes some light gaming I think you could run even battle field 4 at low settings on this so pick one of the PC's

k something funny well at least I think so. I don't know anything about pc part hence the request for help because I was actually looking at the i5 4690k thinking I needed something powerful but I like the price options I'm being given but how much of a difference would a separate graphics card actually make

I think the best candidate is a AMD APU maybe a A8 or A10? :D

If you go with the 7870k you can go with the stock cooler. 7850k cooler is loud.

I have both the 68 and 88 chipset MB

If your near a microcenter near you checkout their A10/MB combos they are dirt cheap.

I think the best candidate is a AMD APU maybe a A8 or A10? :D

Thank you !  the last time I suggested a high end APU I was put on trial at a burning stake!

Ok the Core i5 processor you suggest is a bad idea!  You can get a brand spanking new core i5 Skylake architecture 6600k for the same price point so here is a higher end HTPC below it took me 2 hours to put it together so please read it carefully!

Case: BitFenix Prodigy, it's a bit bulky for ITX form factor but it's simple and beautiful, it's perfect as an HTPC.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA4CP1GG2276&cm_re=bit_fenix_prodigy-_-11-345-017-_-Product

CPU:  Core i5-6600k this is the brand new SkyLake Architecture Linus has wet dreams about.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117561&cm_re=core_i5_6600k-_-19-117-561-_-Product

HDD:  Seagate Barracuda 2TB Drive, The hard drive is sort of overkill, you can go to a 1TB HDD if you want but 2TB will be a ton of storage so the possibilities are limitless

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148834&cm_re=2tb_hard_drive-_-22-148-834-_-Product

SSD: Kingston SSDNow V300 series, an SSD is a no brainer in an HTPC because you need a snappy boot up on your OS and other programs that you need to load quickly because you got it on the TV, this is OPTIONAL

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA2W02KJ5977

Motherboard:  ASUS Z170-A this has the new LGA 1151 Socket for your new skylake CPU

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813132566&cm_re=lga_1151_motherboard-_-13-132-566-_-Product

RAM:  Can't go wrong with G.Skill RIPJAWS 4 series with two 8gig sticks of DDR4 RAM

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231827&cm_re=DDR4_RAM-_-20-231-827-_-Product

Graphics Card:  GTX 960 WindForce, can't go wrong with this card with your price point here this card will suit all of your needs.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125777&cm_re=gtx_960-_-14-125-777-_-Product

PSU:  SeaSonic G750 750W PSU this will suit your needs nicely!

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151132&cm_re=750w_power_supply-_-17-151-132-_-Product

CPU Cooler:  Skylake CPU's dont come with stock coolers so here is one that will be perfect!  Corsair H105

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835181060&cm_re=cpu_water_cooler-_-35-181-060-_-Product

This beastly machine comes out to arround

1,129$  Now you can make edits to this machine for example you can get a cheaper ITX case like the Cooler Master Elite 120 Advanced for 50$ Get a hard drive with less storage maybe even be a cheapskate and get a lamer processor I dunno it's up to you m8 do what you want you've seen the options now make us proud!

I wouldnt waste time with the 7870k (i own one)... get the 7850k. its so easy to OC these APUs that even a fool can do it.  Especially the ASrock board have a great BIOS for beginners, and they have good enough power delivery to give you a good OC.

Freezer7 is much weaker then Freezer 13, which costs just a little bit more. Alternativly, get a CM TX3. They are great, and cheap.

i would just use the integrated graphics on the intel cpu

Please do not suggest intel for iGPU... they simply arent worth it (yet).... until intel can match Kaveri in iGPU power, they make no sense for even light gaming.

If Intel ever issued a i3 with Iris or Iris Pro iGPU, then sure, intel all the way. But Haswell is 30-50% weaker then Kaveri in iGPU, and the old HD4600 does not support iGPU video acceleration the way Kaveri does it...

Also, H97 is wasted on i3. you cannot OC, better just roll with a cheaper B81 or B85 board....
