Surely more VRAM is useful and worth it

Buy a 4GB version if you get one

No not really, especially if you can get a 4GB r9 290 or a 3GB r9 280x at the same price bracket.

What this guy said, I had a thread before buying my current card and everyone went up in arms, but the thought I got out of it was that the 960 won't make much of a benefit from the extra VRAM.  Plus in the same price bracket those cards are better.  You might even want to look at a 4GB r9 380

EDIT ~ http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/413691-gtx-960-vs-r9-380/ my thread

No, because that card is aimed at 1080p gaming, and 1080p doesn't need more than 2gb of vram. :P

what? who said this? any evidence?

No, it's not worth, the card its self isn't powerful enough to accommodate the full 4 gigs bytes of its VRAM

Um, yes it does. GTA 5 takes 2.8GB out of my 780ti.

There is a 4gb version, but it doesn't make any sense. First of all, a 960 is nowhere near powerful enough to make use of 4gb. Secondly, the 4gb version is almost as expensive as an r9 290, which destroys it so hard it's not even funny.

No the 4GB variant isn't worth it because the memory bus is too small. Reviews show that 2gb and 4gb (on the 960) performance difference is minimal due to the bus being too slow.

Games will use more vram if more is available for caching. Same thing as windows using 5gb of ram at idle when you have 16 and still running fine on 2gb systems. Doesn't mean more is necessary. Also, a 960 won't play gta v at the same settings as a 780ti.

The 960 in general isn't worth it. You'd be better off getting a 280x for the same price. You can even find a 290 if you look around.
