Stop the hating they are actually Damn good laptops and you ca. Upgrade the gpu thanks to mxm standerd and eurocom selling gpus in that standard. Yea they are very expensive but you definitely get what yo pay for.

There is no MXM standard. That stupid MXM has 3 types of modules and 3 types of interfaces, which are either compatible or incompatible between each other. And it's very difficult to find a upgrade for it. A long time ago Asus has a DIY laptop, with MXM modules, trying to find a MXM card, is like looking for a needle in a haystack.

Y U NO 1440P ALIENWARE?!

actually believe it or not, not their fault. there is no laptop sized panel above 15.6 inches that's above 1080p. I too want a high res laptop that's 17 inches or more 

muh specs 

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

I'm a bit confused I thought that full 980m MxM modules were 8gb instead of 4? Same with 970m 6gb instead of 3. I was planning on upgrading my 880m to a 980m before but both throttle without custom bios. Do they sell 4gb 980m's that are not soldered? I thought the new AW (2015) models were all soldered on.

okay fair 

On a side note, give it a 1080p IPS display (weak iGPU after all, well the Ati ones were anyway-never had the Nvidia variant) and you'd never want another laptop for multimedia use-the sound quality from the speakers is insane, and at full volume you get no distortion (the speakers are massive for even modern laptops).

Well Razer does have better build quality, i'll give them that. But they too are overpriced like alienware, and their laptops are nowhere as powerful.

For me, a Clevo or GT80 Titan is a better choice due to easier upgradeability as both companies will offer GPU upgrades

980m SLI and 4790k? There is no way that cooling can keep up with that, that thing is gonna run hot as sun. I don't think any laptop (be it a G751 if you want) could cool it. It sounds great but I have a feeling this thing is gonna throttle.

The ability to google properly is a skill of its own.

I dont need GTX980M SLI if that means having a 5+ kg laptop with massive powerbrick and a battery life of 1 hour.

The Razer Blade is at least a little bit elegant.

 

But since i have a gaming desktop anyway, the laptop I'm actually interested in is the Macbook Pro (really good for software development)

Alienware like usual is extremely late to the party. Let me know when they put a 5775R in the laptop, that would be better in every way for gaming, while also consuming 40% less power.

Laptops will never ever be good for gaming. Cry and yell all you want, they gets way too hot after a time when you're trying to play Minecraft at ultra.

True, i am not trying to defend Alienware or anything, but we are talking about SLI with a desktop CPU in a laptop. The others did it 4+ years ago, but only with a single GPU

no lol.....there were dual gpu clevos with desktop cpus in the 7xxm and 8xxm series, maybe even earlier. You could get 12 core xeons if you wanted. 

Alienware was the first to do the dock sorta right though (hate msi's solution)

yah I think the alienware one is just 4x anyway. TB 2 and 3 are great solutions. Plus for some reason (which I think I know why) the 18 doesn't have the dock

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

yah I think the alienware one is just 4x anyway. TB 2 and 3 are great solutions. Plus for some reason (which I think I know why) the 18 doesn't have the dock

True, it is overkill and overpriced, so who needs to waste more money on an external GPU
