US firms drop .com from domain names

Muz

It's not a mistake. Companies, organisations and people are starting to forsake the familiar ".com" and ".org" internet address suffixes, using instead hundreds of new ones like ".legal," ".restaurant," ".solutions," ".movie" and ".nyc" that have been coming on the market since early 2014.

TOP 10 NEW INTERNET DOMAIN SUFFIXES IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER:

1 .agency

2 .email

3 .expert

4 .fitness

5 .guru

6 .media

7 .photography

8 .services

9 .solutions

10 .today

It's just becoming more of a hassle to find websites with all these new domain suffixes. IMO just keep the good old .com, .net, .org, but more suffixes is a bit of a nice touch to personalization.

Maybe I am starting to become an old grumpy man, but I prefer .com for domain names. I think it is a lot more clear that it is a website and not someone who forgot to add a space after ending their sentence.

It will certainly help people get catchy and unique domain names though.

I don't mind the .net/.org/.ca whatever domain names. I'd much prefer them staying at most 3/4 characters. I don't want to see domain names like .otherdomainsweretaken or something really long. Keep the domains short, for example ".legal" could be ".law" and ".restaurant" can just be ".eat".

Linus isn't about jsut the tips though, he goes further in ;)

ONTOPIC:

this change can be both good and bad, if we stay attached to the .com extensions by habit, while companies forsake it there is quite some potential for scammers.

May the light have your back and your ISO low.

so I can't name my site com.com.com anymore??

I just typed that into my address bar to see if it was taken and it took me to a survey and told me I won an iPhone 6 :)

I remember this old website www.com (yes, that used to be their URL)... They provided a simple email service back then... until they closed down...

also, I'd like the longer stuff to be in the subdomain part of the url and not at the tld...

Hmm well its kinda nice that it lets people do more stuff with the URLs and gives people more flexibility. Now days most people either have bookmarks for their favorite sites, RSS feeds/facebook they get linked to/from, and search things on search engines to find what they want. An average user likely doesn't have to type in a full URL very often anymore, so i see this as more of a novelty thing.

There are some advantages to the new domain extensions. I'll give an example to explain my point. If I am searching for a restaurant in London, search engines could prioritise results of restaurants have a .london domain. It has potential and as we see the .com and .org drop in popularity, we will probably see a wider range of extensions come to the market which is both a good and a bad thing.

.london would ideally look better as .ldn but then again we aren't the ones regulating this at ICANN

victoriassecret.london vs victoriassecret.ldn

2nd one looks better and adds style to the business' tld

The .tech domains were released a couple of weeks ago, I'd grab them while they're open, I got mine but did a 1 day "preregistration"

Not really. I just find that most of the time, i find no need to care about if a website has .com, .net or .eu.

IMHO this is kinda dumb. I understand some of them, but really? .photography? THAT IS SO FUCKING LONG why can't that be .photo? it does the same thing and gets the same message across. I'd much rather have short vauge domain names than specific long ones.
