What motherboard series would i need to overclock a q6600?

Go to solution Solved by ApolloX75,

I like using 1333mhz(333MHz FSB) capable boards when overclocking something like a Q6600. They provide a lot of headroom since the Q6600 is an older 1066MHz chip. If you get a G0 stepping SLACR chip then you're pretty much holding a goldmine of potential.

P45 boards are common enough and generally most of them will be reliable. There's a lot of success with Gigabyte EP45s, Asus P5Qs and ECS P45T AD3 boards. You can get very high end nForce 780i and 790i boards, but they are grouchy not very user friendly for a novice.

Also Harrynowl's OC guide is a wealth of information. Be sure to use it.

hello, im throwing together a q6600 build and since its pretty ancient from 2009, and i want to overclock it. what type of motherboard would i need. there really is no z/h series for that old so how do i know if a motherboard could overclock the 6600?

I can't effectively answer your question, but @Jumper118 and @harrynowl will definitely be able to. They're both offline now, but they have an extensive knowledge of LGA775.

pxx series, eg, p35 / p45 chipset. x38 / x48 chipset. Not G31/G41. Qxxx series can but many have locked bios from OEM vendors such as HP/Dell/Compaq.

i3-4170, H81 board, 8GB DDR3, Crucial M4, GTX 770, Xigmatek Vangaurd Case, Creative Titanium X-fi, Razer Carcharias, 500w PSU, 24" VA panel and a 42" IPS. Thinking about getting a plant.

You can also google BSEL Q6600 MOD.

Apply some tape, go from 2.4Ghz to 3.0Ghz (I did this myself, it works great)

/Having the better CPU revision out of the two+ they have helps (Called 'Stepping')

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

you want p35 or p45 chipsets. p45 is the way to go something like a GA-EP45T-UD3LR or a  asus p5q3 as they overclock like a beast and supports ddr3.

the only problem is finding a good one is too expensive. but any ga-ep45-ud3 motherboard will work fine just ddr2 memory.

if you do get any of these boards..ditch the q6600 and buy a x5470 (which is like 25% better than a q9650) and a 771/775 adapter sticker off ebay for 60 bucks

cpu:i7-4770k    gpu: msi reference r9 290x  liquid cooled with h55 and hg10 a1     motherboard:z97x gaming 5   ram:gskill sniper 8 gb

Here you go. Finding and linking anything on the mobile site is absolutely horrendous. I hope the new design is finished soon.
