How to achieve 1 gbps file transfer through home network

Hello guys,

Im new to networking,need you guys to help me.

I cant get 1gbps file transfer speed through my server as i plug it into the router with a gigabit port.

The server connected does not have 1gbps but is 100mbps only.

Whats the problem here?

If either the server or the client cannot support 1 GigE speeds it wont work, the whole route has to be gigabit in order to get the speed.

If you are wondering why it isn't so fast as it should be 1 gigabit per second is around 100 megabytes per second.

Something wrong with your connection ?

Run the damn cable :)

oh, im using whs 2011. both pc must be connected to 1 gigabit per second port ??

Yeh. Both have to have 1 Gbps Network cards and Both need to be connected through a Networking cable capable of 1Gbps speed and both have to be connected to a router or switch that supports 1Gbps speed.

Yes it can, any cable can when the distance is short.

Something wrong with your connection ?

Not true. Some Cat5 Cables don't even have all 8 wires. They have 4. Hence only capable of 100Mb/ps

They use only the Orange and Green. 1,2,3 & 6

Some Cat 5 Cables with carry Gigabit Signal over short distances.

In general just go with Cat5e or Cat6

Yes it can, any cable can when the distance is short.
As long as you have 4 pairs it should work, but yeah use that as a last resort when you don't have any cat5e cat6 cable handy.

I use cat5e at home and it works perfectly

After you get both NIC's to Gb...

Unless you are transferring between SSD's(or WD-VR's) on both machines, you will most likely not see full Gb speeds (1000 Mb/s or 125MB/s). You will be limited by the read/write speeds of the HDD's. My WD Black will come close on large files, but usually tops out at 70 MB/s on game files and whatnot. Usually your bottleneck is the read speed of the serving drive.

My WD Caviar green drives get 100+ MB/s without a hitch (sequentially)...

i think it's 125mb/s because 1 byte=8 bits
