80 PLUS Efficiency and What It Really Means

You would really think that this is a common sense but I also see a lot of people recommend PSUs based on efficiency. And I see them even more often to overestimate the needed wattage for the system by a lot.

Overkill very expensive PSU (1000W 80+ Platinum) for system that will draw 400W from the wall at most where 500W-550W 80+ lower rated PSU which costs half as much would actualy work with the same efficiency due to working in the most efficient 50% load.

EVGA 1600w 80 PLUS Titanium

high efficiency certified 94% Efficiency @ 50% Load

For the longest time I thought your avvy was a pic of an elephant with perpetual motion going through it's trunk. I see differently now.

Well even though a G2 750 watt would be more than enough for something like this http://pcpartpicker.com/p/dpkpvK going with an extra 100 watts allows for a potential SLI or Crossfire set up.

Also for extreme overclocks > : D

I'm pretty sure you can run that system with two 980tis on 750W. I'd personally go 850 but I'm pretty sure it would run without hiccups.

Total system load for SLI 980 tis is 761W so nah.

I think that's draw from the wall. Still not a bad idea to be safe rather than sorry.

PC part picker goes by what it draws from the PSU not the wall.

Pc Part Picker just adds up the TDP and adds a little.....

They actually add nothing extra, the value they give is almost dead on for everything, and tdp is essentially the amount it draws from the powersuplly.

They definitely do not get it spot on....

Here's what they think of my system. Add up the TDP of my components and you get like 130W..... There really is no such thing as a good PSU calculator.

Let's just say this thing draws power in the mid 100s of watts under load.

EDIT: Should also add that this is what was hit when using a power hungry i7 with my card http://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/his-radeon-hd-7770-ghz-edition-review,6.html

You seem to forget the fact that your CPU and GPU are not the only things with a tdp ratting it also has to account for your other components and the power draw of your fans.
