My thoughts:

I decided to get the best graphics card that I could for the price, since that would have the greatest impact in gaming performance.  The 7950 can handle just about anything.  Instead of the hexa-core CPUs others have listed, I went with a simple, yet capable quad-core FX-4300.  (Edit: BRING ON THE SIX CORE!)  I also went with 4GB of RAM instead of 8GB since most games can't even make use of 4GB.  I chose only one stick of RAM so that another could be added in the future.  For $550, this is easily the best performing gaming system you could buy.

Hello and welcome to the LTT Build-Off, Week 4! This week's challenge is to build something to convert people from the "next-gen" consoles to PC gaming for $550 (No elitist ideology required).
A twist this week is that you do not need a monitor or speakers, because a console would be hooked up to your TV. You can opt for a KB + M, or a controller, or both (and this is part of the price). Make sure that this PC is something you would want in your living room. A tower case with LED lighting may not be the best choice...
As always, the rules can be found here.

This contest will run from Friday the 2nd to Tuesday the 6th, with voting on the 7th and 8th.
May the odds be ever in your favor!

UPDATE Aug. 9th 2013: @tk421 is the winner! Thank you to everyone who participated and voted. The next contest can be found here.

My opinion on the cooler: I didn't include a cooler since AMD stock coolers are decent (you can still overclock with this cooler), and it would push the build out of budget.

My opinion on the RAM: RAM is at DDR3-2400, but you will have to downclock it to DDR3-2000, or 1866 due to the CPU's IMC, and motherboard limitations. The reason I didn't just go with DDR3-2133 RAM, or slower, is because this RAM has a higher chance of running at slower speeds with tighter timings. Also, you could reuse this RAM in future builds that can utilize DDR3-2400.

My opinion on the graphics solution: This video card is still one of the best 'bang for the buck" graphics cards and has lots of overclocking headroom. The 7870 is also power efficient, meaning higher wattage power supplies are not needed. This should be able to play most games at 1080p on high to medium settings for years to come.

My opinion on the case: The BitFenix Merc Alpha is one of the sleekest cases you can get in this price range. It has USB 3.0 ports, a simplistic, modern design that would suit most living rooms.

My opinion on the power supply: Corsair has been known to re-brand power supplies from reliable OEM's. This cheap, modular, 80 PLUS Bronze 430w PSU should be able to suit our needs.

My opinion on peripherals: This keyboard and mouse combination is ideal for this build. It suits the budget, and connects wirelessly, eliminating messy cabling that runs the length of the room. The mouse uses a laser sensor, meaning it track on nearly any surface.

$45 spare for an xbox 360 conroller and wireless adapter.

Please use the BBCode Markup and paste it into your post. Also, please add the controller and wifi adapter as custom parts in your part list or put the links in your post so the prices can be verified. Thank you!

A week or so ago i managed to make $503 dollar build with 6300 and 7870.THIS: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1kuau

Topic: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/39359-console-killer-build/?hl=%20console%20%20killer%20%20build

Now is like 635 dollars lol. People tried to make their own "console killer builds" but posted some athlon builds xD. The case was like 14 dollars then, and free shipping.

But yeah, with all discounts and carefully picked out parts you could end up with 500 dollar build with 6300 and mid-high end card.

Ok, i will EDIT my Post and post build. It will take some time.

This is what i would choose. But you could bring cost down with cheaper memory, mouse and keyboard and buy cheaper cpu cooler. Thats what i would do.

Very nice build tho.

yeah, i went for the more expensive memory becuase i'm using the apu so the fast memory will help and the cpu cooler is to try and make it silent.

Some of the the fun is the luck of the draw people get with discounts. It's too bad those discounts aren't still available this week.

As long as your build is in by Tuesday then it's fine :)

You can vote for his build if you think it is better than yours. :P

A CX 430 can power a 7870? Does it have 2 PCI-E 6 pins? I thought it only has 1 6+2 pin.

Yes, it can power it just fine. The 7870 should come with two 6 pin to 4 pin power adapters. You only need one though.

Dual core is useless nowadays, why'd you take Dual-module FX-4300?

I'd try to squish into your build Phenom II x4 965 Black Edition, much better than 4300.

Dual core and dual module aren't the same thing.  The X4 965 BE is very close to the FX-4300 in performance and even pulls ahead in gaming stats, which is what is was aiming for.

There are rumors that the PS4's OS takes 3.5 GB of RAM by itself, so usable RAM is closer to 4GB than 8GB. It would still be nice to have 8 though.

Good point.  I doubt that any games at launch will be able to fully utilize that much RAM though.  The only time on my system that I've used over 4GB of RAM at one time is when I'm doing 3D design rendering, video editing, etc.

Which is precisely why I selected one dimm of ram.  When games begin to evolve more as the platforms mature, you can add another dimm to the system.

Voting is now live! We need some votes so I don't need to delay the winner like last week.

@ You didn't edit in your build before the deadline, so I can't count it even if you put it in now. Please vote though, and come back for next week's contest :)

PS4 has 8GB of GDDR5. That is shared between the CPU and the GPU. In this case the GPU has it's own memory (3GB). So the amount of memory usable by the CPU isn't that much less. And then there's the thing about PS4's OS consuming 3,5GB of RAM...

We have a winner, this build stomps all over APUs etc...

So... If Jesus had the gold, would he buy himself out instead of waiting 3 days for the respawn?

I don't recall anyone running a 7950 off a cx430, let alone stable at load.
