Windows 10 has been, or will be downloaded today for those who reserved - Don't delete C:\$windows.~BT

GoodBytes

In the case anyone notices that their C:\ drive just got smaller in terms of free space. The Windows 10 reservation software has already downloaded Windows 10 setup for the upgrade on July 29th, for many. Others will be downloaded today. If you were late to the reservation, or Microsoft servers are too busy, or you are not online for a while, you'll get the OS update the 29th, or even later on, possibly reaching a week or so after Windows 10 has been released.

Windows 10 upgrade setup is located in: C:\$windows.~BT. It could be in a different drive if there insufficient space on C:\
So, if you notice this folder, and wonder what it is. Don't delete it. (The folder might be marked as 'hidden').

Microsoft will unlock and activate the Windows 10 install at midnight tonight. However, the entire distribution is in waves, which can up to a month, if you are unlucky.

The size of the folder is bigger than expected, as it includes large day 1 patch. Once completed, the folder size will be ~6GB.

Important Note:
If you see that Windows 10 is downloaded but it not upgrading this is because:

  • It is being deployed in waves, to limit damages from Microsoft side if something is discovered.

  • Your system is not Windows 10 ready driver wise. This means that your system is OK, but some driver(s) have bug(s) which will break the Windows 10 experience to you. Once the manufacture releases a fix, then your Windows will be ready to install and enjoy.

To know which one affected you, the "Get Windows 10" app, will tell you which ever is the case. It will tell you either:

  • It is being deployed in waves (specifically)
    or
  • We're validating your PC. (clicking in "More information" will tell you that Microsoft is working with partners to make sure your PC is ready)

In this thread, it is discussed on how to force the install.

how long will it take to download?

Well the folder size is extracted files, and due to the day 1 patches, it is difficult to know the exact size, beside the fact that when those/this day1 patch is extracted it will be around 1GB big worth of data that will replace Windows original files. In addition, server load, and your connection speed make it difficult to know, as server load varies, and your internet speed can be 1Mbps, like ti can be 250Mbps+

Balls. Nothing downloaded for me yet (I think). Checking WP for large downloads but nothing unusual yet :(

Found a pretty neatly pack of 1GB pulses from last Friday. Roughly 9-10GB of data downloaded. Could it be it? <_< (not able to check right now since I'm at work and my PC shut down a few hours ago)

Last time I rebooted was on Friday due to Win prompting me to reboot (been postponing for a week or so). Updated my post with findings from WhatPulse

When will the upgrade of my Win8.1 Pro key be possible? Since I happen to have a Win10 iso I could just install that. I don't know if my Win8.1 Pro key will get accepted.

Thank god I upgraded to a 500GB plan, however, what do you do when you've been forced to roll back all Windows updates since you installed Windows 7 because you don't know which update got your computer stuck in the 'failure to configure updates' loop?

You should make space then, because Windows 10 will keep your own Windows under Windows.OLD folder.

Also, if you are tight in space, Windows 10 will be compressed. Meaning it will run slower, and your CPU usage will be high as it decompresses things and recompress them as it goes. Try and have at least 30GB free.

I wonder... Will there be ISO for download?

Microsoft said yes. But to get Windows 10 for free you need to do the upgrade first. Once you have done the upgrade, then you re-install via the Windows 10 ISO.

We still don't know any details on entire process.

They could allow using Windows 7 or 8.1 key in the Windows 10 installation for "manual" upgrade. Now it looks like I will have to wait for the reservation as I was planning to buy key tomorrow so I am not reserved.

It's downloading the files. Installation will be missing critical components until you get the promp to install. Some people report that their files get corrupted or deleted when they try to install it as it is.

Yea. Just wait. It is best.

Also, Assuming you can, Windows 10 should be able to activate, as Microsoft said that they'll open the door for activation July 29th.

Now, ok I am sure there is a way to make it install, but I think we can all wait a few hours and not pass through a headache.

Microsoft will do it's lunch event as well.

I'm assuming I'll be able to upgrade for free for a year like it says right?  I tend to not get new versions of windows right when they come out thanks to a few bad experiences.
