Will the ASUS Z170 ROG Extreme support 3 and 4 way SLI/Crossfire?

So the ROG line-up of Skylake motherboards got announced. Does anybody knows if the Extreme version will have support for 3/4 way SLI?

Articles say it will have one 16x slot and three 8x slot with a PLX chip in it.

Those look insanely sexy but I'll still stick with the MSI M5 or M7 :)

Yes, 4 way on the Extreame with reduced lanespeed.

The hero seems like 2 way SLI, maybe 3 way with very reduced speed.

Yes.  It should be able to support it, and it'll likely have a PLX chip.  I'm surprised this is a mainstream extreme board.

It's ROG's flagship motherboard, so I think it'll most probably have 4-way SLI support. CrossFire is present in any motherboard as long as it has more than one PCIe x8 slot.

Will the Air 540 with 8 expansion slots be big enough or do I need a case with 9 or more  :P

Yes guys, I know that 3 and 4 way are overkill, I just like to spend that extra 100$ on the extreme to get 3 or 4 way sli/crossfire in the 5-6 years that this build will easily last.

As long as you get 2-slot cards and don't have any other PCIe peripherals, you'll be alright. Frankly, Tri-SLI, Tri-Fire, Quad-SLI and Quad-Fire aren't supported by a lot of games, any thing more than two GPUs are generally a waste of money, or a huge one if you go with a Fury, Fury X, 980 or 980 Ti, why would you pay 500-700 for a couple more FPS in games.

Every ROG z170 board supports 4-way crossfire/SLI, but on boards like Gene it would work like putting in two dual-GPU cards.

Almost everyboard can support quad gpu setup, but not all of them can support 4-way SLI or CFX. 4-way means you actually have 4 graphic cards installed. Quad is 2 physical graphic cards, but each graphic card has 2 gpus.

I know it's a waste of money, but who knows what the future might hold.

Also getting the Extreme because it will have more features and it will be bigger. I expect it to be around 250-300$, the Hero 200$ and the Ranger 150-170$.
