So my 280X died and I got a full refund. Tell me what to buy now!

Go to solution Solved by rafazafar,

I'm currently looking into the Asus Direct CU II because the Strixx version simply costs 50€ more. I'm not sure if the higher price is worth it

since you have a freesync monitor why not go for a 390 or 390x? they are cheaper as well.

I can recommend the msi and sapphire nitro , but i do now know much about the cooler construction of others. they tend to be cheaper than a DirectCU II as well

strix, powercolor pcs+ are good tho. tho strix tend to be more expensive and psc+ tend to be huge.

ps. im looking at mindfactory tho. Im not sure which website you are using

maybe you can check on Geizhals.de

Last week I purchased a new Monitor (Asus MG279Q) and it arrived a few days ago but my GPU suddenly died before I could test it (I'm mr unlucky). The card had some problems before but the manufacturer said it's okay. So this time I contacted the retailer and they said I should send it in to them. Just got their mail.... I got a full refund for my card from 2013 :D So now I'm looking into buying a new card and I'm willing to pay some money for an upgrade. I got 280€ back and I'm willing to pay up to 200€ more (let's say 220€ for the clean 500€ mark) so I would be in the market for either a R9 390X or a GTX 980.

My monitor is a 1440P, 144hz screen with freesync functionality but the freesync only goes up to 90hz and is not a major concern for me.

So tell me what to buy and if you recommend brands remember that only the cheaper 980s fall into my budget :)

Thank you!

A happy dead gpu owner.

it's time for some jolly cooperation!

From what Ive read, the 980 should beat the 390x at 1440p.

iIf you want to use freesync you need to go for AMD so the R9 390X would be a good choice or maybe wait for the r9 nano...

the 390x beats the 980 (barely and not in gta V) but you cant really overclock it like you can a 980

so 390x if no oc

980 if yes oc

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

With that money I would go for the r9 390, or the fury air cooled.

Both awesome cards ;)

A bigass Berlin bear or pikachu would be nice...

that would be a great idea if I would not already have a berlin bear and lots of pikachus. maybe I buy high heels for my bear so he gets even bigger

But in all honestly. The r9 390 or 970 will work well for you, the price jump to a 390x and 980 is not really that worth it sadly.:) i just tend to go grab things from kleinanzeigen haha.

And to everyone else. Yeah the prices in Deutschland for 980ti and fury its crazy high! So not really recommended.

Im contemplaying of bringing in a 980ti when i go back there after Sommerferien. xD

Depends on what card. I like the msi and nitro r9 390 (good vrm cooling) . For the 970 im not sure, i have only used palit jetstream, and gigabyte windforce 970. Both boosted to bout the same, both had coil whine, but they were the cheapest one, thats not refrence-style, on Mindfactory. Haha.

The Asus (not Direct CU, but higher end ones) tend to have no coilwhine and such. or so i herd and saw.

I'm using caseking because they are not far away from me and I cheap out on the shipping cost by getting my ass over to their shop :P I think I have settled for the 390X but I'm struggling on the brand. Sapphire is sadly a turn off by the orange colour splattered over it... not exactly what I like to see... but it seems to be a bit nicer from the cooler. I'll just never look at my PC and take the sapphire if you can say the same nice things about the sapphire tri-x like the nitro

if you are buying on case king. the MSI Gaming is the one to go for. since its the same price as a tri-x and nitro (which are usually cheaper since the msi has slightly better cooling). With the strix you really are paying for the looks :)

but before you buy i really advice you to look at some performance details about the MSI 390(not 390x)

its actually pretty good as well. might save you 100euros for something else :)

or even the older 290x if you dont mind not having the 8gb ram.

haha don't make this any harder on me man xD I'm just going to blow my cash and try not to think too hard about it or in the end I'll buy a 280x again from not wanting to spend my money :P

haha alright. i would personally get the MSI Gaming r9 390 and overclock it, it will perform same as a stock 390x.

That way you both save some money and get great gaming performance. :)

Either way. Enjoy! :)

ps. 290/390 series are way faster than 280x :) theres a performance jump there.

290/390 to 290x/390x isnt much , not 100euro worth at all.

So let's call this a first update. I haven't bought a new card yet because the store is closed today but I'll get it on monday. now your point about the 390 vs 390x seems to be valid and I have the feeling I would regret spending those 90€ more on the 390x. Additionally I just spotted a GTX 980 (Inno3D HerculeZ X3, what an idiotic name and I don't know the brand) on sale for 30€ more than the msi 390x. I feel like every day I wait longer my decisions will get harder and I will get more confused.

So it's currently MSI 390 (370€) vs MSI 390X (460€) vs  Inno3D 980 (490€)

pros for amd: freesync, cheaper

cons amd: confusion ( :D) , no interest in the gamecodes

pros for nvidia: comes with a game code for MGS V (MGS being my favourite game series so saving me the 60€ it will cost with the gamecode), higher efficiency

cons nvidia: no freesync, higher price (which would not be higher if you take into account that I pay 30€ more and save 60 on the game = saving 30€ compared to the the MSI 390X)

I'm sorry if I'm a bit bothersome but me being ill does not help me with my decision making.

it's time for some jolly cooperation!

Hi again. I would advice an msi gaming r9 390 still and just buy a gamekey for mgs v, its bout 30eur. Also hercules is not a good brand, hence the "sale"

Okay! Thank you once again! while I don't think that MGS V Phantom pain keys should be available currently (game is releasing in september) I would still come out cheaper with the MSI 390 + the game at full price than any of the other 2 options.

it's time for some jolly cooperation!
