Intel Haswell 4670k + 4770K Overclocking guide

I set my ring bus to 42 to match the OC.  Just started the 8 hour stress test core voltage on adaptive at 1.7 (althought IXTU is showing it at 1.8 during the stress test), leaving the VCCIN on auto.  I'll report back on how it goes.

 

I decided to do 4.2 so that I can keep all my fans quiet even under load.  I'll go for a high OC once I get my watercooling loop.  EK needs to get off their ass with that DCUII 780 waterblock...

yeah, 780 is pretty awesome...  I went with the Asus card just to have matching mobo and gfx... hopefully asus+ek waterblock comes out cheaper than the Classified Hydrocopper...

Overall I like the board, but it does have a few down sides. 

 

The VRM block that supposedly watercooling ready is aluminum.  Asus is saying it'll be fine to mix with copper because its anodized or coated or whatever... but I'm not taking their word for it.  I'm gonna wait for a few people to use it before I decide to run water through it.

The other thing I don't like is what I mentioned in my first post in this thread, they like to rename industry standard terms in their ROG line (VCCIN for example).

ROG line of mobo's "optimized defaults" aren't Intel's intended "optimized defaults".  One example of this is ROG's default is to have the core voltage on manual/static, not adaptive like Intel intended

JJ did a publicity tour with their boards telling everyone how great their AI3 is and the automatic overclock features.  However, he failed to mention that they don't work on the ROG line of mobo's.  However, the feature is still included... just doesn't work...

 

so those are the 4 things I don't like about it, other than that its great!

AI3 suite doesnt work for automated oveclocking on ROG boards.. kinda lame. From what I have seen the AI suite typically does a pretty good job at overclocking, however i have also seen people complain about the overclock it sets is not really stable. the thermal armor meh, not for me, but i really like the backplate!

 

Heres JJS best videos in my opinon for haswell, only cause anand shimpi drills him for insight. Vs videos with lets say Logan. Its like watching a marketer (JJ) and your typical consumer (Logan) clean each-others  genitals lol.   anand is very technical and offers phenomenal insight in everything he does. thats prolly why intel invited anand to do a series of interviews on wireless broadband

well it would seem you have 5 minutes of stability at 1.29V thats enough time to capture a screenshot and to get an idea of your temps.

Well i turned my ring bus down to 43, and set voltage to 1.26, on idle i have 35 degrees. Going to stress test now

you are too vague about describing what you have tried . seems like your a bit all over the place. you really need to follow the guide step by step. if you are unwilling to post a screenshot identical to this one, i cant help you sorry.

so I finally got around to watching these vids (the Asus ones, the whole LTE thing doesn't really interest me).  It really wasn't much different than most of the other vids I saw...  It was a little less infomercially, but there was nothing in there that would have given me a heads up on any of the things I don't like with the Formula board.

 

Speaking of things I don't like, remembered another one.  Fan Xpert 2.  In general its ok, but its kinda glitchy.  First of all, you only have control of the cpu and 3 chassis fan headers in AI3.  The 3 or 4 (don't remember exactly how many) "opt" fan headers you can only control in the bios with Asus's standard profiles or a set manual from 50-90% in 10% increments.  Its not really a big deal, but false advertising really rubs me the wrong way...  every place JJ went he touted all of their PWN fan controls and the fact that Fan Xpert is so awesome and can control so many fans, when in reality it really only has great control over 3 fans + cpu.

funny you say that about fan expert2, i was under the assumption ( as you were) that asus had a top notch fan control solution!

 

all I can say is the msi fan control software is top notch. all parameters can be defined through the OS as well as the bios. I just click the ez tune button and my fans work great. very quite when idling and when the cpu hits 60c the all fans ramp up to 100%.

lol i guess you are entitled to your opinion.

 

I personally wont invest in most asus products right now, but

 

In my opinion they offer the best consumer grade audio cards, hands down, quality DACs at $200.00 almost unheard of in the hifi world.

 

their new pci ssd looks boss and performs like a champ,

 

I think they did a great job with the direct CU cooling solution for their gfx cards

 

im in a love hate relationship with asus, I like checking out thier enthusiast boards but I would never buy one. way to overpriced for the most part, and the hero...meh looks low end to me..

 

but i certainly would never bash them, they have a huge fan base \ following.

 

were they not the first mobo manufacturer to implement flashing the bios without a cpu? thats pretty kool i think.

This pretty much sums it up. When I don't have it and I hear about all of Asus's awesome features that separate it from its competitors, I love it. When I get it and try to use those features... hate starts creeping in...

But overall, I like my board... I think... And no complaints about my gfx...

lol, I'll admit the sound cards are something I overlooked, :wacko:

The SSD hasn't been out long enough to prove to me that it doesn't have its flaws and that it will actually last its expected lifetime.

Since I live in South Africa which is quite warm I tend to see more of asus's flaws than people in cooler countries as the heat reduces the lifetime even more. <_<

And yes lol their enthusiast boards have a lot of bells and whistles but I was never one to care for those lol  :rolleyes:

Anyways, I think MSI is just miles ahead of Asus when it comes to quality.
