Accessing Router from External IP

Go to solution Solved by Blade of Grass,

Does it go cable -> ISP modem -> your router? or just cable -> router?

Unless thier modem is in bridge mode, than it wont work properly.

I've been having this problem for a while now and it has been bugging me since I want to set up an wireless ip camera. For some reason, I cannot seem to access my router using my external ip, even though I have enabled remote management. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Are you trying to remotely access the camera or router or both?

Some ISP's block port 80 (the standard web port) for non business accounts so you might have to change the default remote access port.  What router?

Eventually, I'll be trying to access my camera and I know how to setup the port forwarding stuff. Right now, I would just like to access my router from my external ip. I've tried a variety of ports, none of which have worked. I have a D-link dir655 router.

Is this what menu looks like?

http://www.dlink.com/-/media/Consumer_Products/DIR/DIR%20655/Manuels/DIR655B1manual070312v23pdf.pdf

page 80.

"obvious" but checking anyway

  • correct port number when entering url
  • restart router
  • correct external ip?

Some things to check/try

  • passwords are not the default system password
  • setup up "user" password
  • use wired connection from computer to check
  • set up ddns (unless you have static ip) and use the domain name instead of IP address
  • enable https (make sure to type https://url:port)
  • access from external location/alternate network (smart phone ... neighbor wifi...)

edit: there's also a way to troubleshoot if you have another router or if you have a crossover cat5/6 cable.
