Benchmarks of the Skylake i7 6700K have emerged... Only marginally faster than 4790K...

Chinese technology website TechBang has just released this; benchmarks of the upcoming Skylake 6700K on a Z170 motherboard.

The benchmarks show that at stock speeds, the Skylake 14nm 6700K is only 30cb faster in Cinebench R15... yeah...

But seriously, 0.4V??? as in a bit over a THIRD of the 4790k voltage? Can that be right?

 

That would mean the power consumption would be under 15% of Haswell from voltage alone and yet the TDP is 95W. Are they planning to run at 25GHz? I might be oversimplifying but I don't believe that it runs at .4V AND has a 95W TDP

 

EDIT: nvm I am dumb... 15% power consumption at idle makes sense... I thought that was somehow a spec sheet, excuse my ignorance about CPU-Z

I now feel pleased with my i7 purchase last month. I reckon I can hang onto my i7 for a good few years if this is the case. Plus it might just give AMD time to catch up with Zen hopefully.

It's a variable voltage, it won't always run at that speed and voltage, it will scale depending on the load it's under, obviously that screenshot was taken when it was idling.

Ok, I was just being silly and thought CPU-Z worked differently, didn't realize that was realtime info (I see the 8-42 multiplyer specification now)

New Integrated graphics looks a whole lot better...

 

Im suprised (well not really) that CPU performance is exactly the same. Ive seen bigger gaps between my butt cheeks.

 

Whatever. Im hopping onto Skylake at the end of this year for sake of platform and DDR4.

 

Building a new rig spring next year with the new HBM2.0 GPUs and Skylake + DDR4.

 

By that time, Im just hoping Fractal Design has their R6 out already!

Uh, 0.4V?! No one should be believing this. Even if you take dynamic voltage into account, the decimal precision is ALWAYS 2-3 places, even if there has to be a 0. I've never seen a CPU-Z or GPU-Z give only 1 decimal place of precision, and it's not like I tweak the software.

This doesn't really make sense considering broadwell performs almost as good at stock 3.6 GHz as haswell does at 4.4. If skylake did nothing to improve over broadwell then it should still be nearly 17% better than haswell.

While I doubt this is valid or will be enough to determine performance across the board, be aware all the low-hanging fruit has been picked on gaining CPU performance. Look at the following table containing the clock latencies for the x86 instruction set on architectures all the way up to Haswell. Look at the amount between 1 and 3. Most of the ones above 1 involve fused operations or register shuffling. Anything above 3 involves pushes/pops to/from memory and can't be done faster without faster memory.

Zen is not going to leap far ahead of this if it even reaches this. Intel is scraping the last residue off the barrel at this point. Software has to evolve. There's no other choice at this point.
