Microsoft to buy AMD?! [updated]

zMeul

Microsoft would be complete idiots to hinder performance/functionality on Nvidia/Intel hardware in anyway if they owned AMD. MS wants to sell as many copies of windows as possible. That means making sure it works well on ALL platforms with ALL hardware components.

So next week Mattel will be buying AMD to leverage AMD's IP to create the ultimate toys for the NSA to use to spy on 'Merricuns?

Its not gonna happen. Intel wont allow it, theyd rather have AMD release a competitive product for a generation or two, to keep them alive, than allow them be aquired by a profitable big company. (Intel can always revoke their x86 licence if they get bought)

Crying can't help intel nor any company.

If Intel revokes x86 then AMD revokes x64, not including legal actions against Intel for monopoly.

AMD 860K @ 4.3GHz ; Kingston HyperX Fury 2400MHz ; Asus A88XM-Plus ; Sapphire R9 270X 2GB ; 600W Tacens Radix VII AG 80+Silver  ; Cooler Master TX3 Evo

Yeah, and microsoft is MANY times the size of intel. and quite ironic for Sony, as every ps4 sold willl be giving money to Microsoft hahahahahahaha

nope, intel doesnt use AMDs x64 (well they implement it, but everyone is using intel based instructions, SSE/AVX) so it doesnt matter. and Intel can always give NVIDIA a licence to avoid legal actions. They wont be able to make anything effective for a while anyway

Yup. If they did pull something like that they could see a large part of their userbase run off to alternatives like linux. If Nvidia jumps on OpenGL and brings it up to par there'll be no reason to keep on using DX.

Then RIP Linux support on AMD cards i guess if Microsoft ever took over that.

They wont give it to nvidia, they have too many resources so would be too much competition. they will probably give it to a smaller company.

tjey need to have a company who can be competitive own the licence as well, so they dont get in legal trouble over a monopoly. NV can be seen as such, but not as a threat to intel, any more than AMD is. They are comparably a tiny company, plus they dont have fabs. Way better then MS getting it, and potentially rebuying GloFo

Linux is already getting DX12 in the form of Vulkan which will bring gaming up to windows 10 performance. Nvidia's Linux drivers are already at windows 8.1 performance, it's just AMD that needs to catch up with their current Linux drivers, but I think they're just gonna sit on it until Vulkan comes along though. AMD seems to have their hands tied with other things at the moment.

If AMD shows no interest in supporting the Linux community, then I have no issues using Nvidia cards. I use what works best. Right now I'm using a GTX 760 in my Linux machine (Project Stalker). Got rid of my 7950 because the AMD Linux drivers were so bad. With the 760 and Nvidia Linux drivers, it's like gaming on a windows machine. ;)

There are several problems with this

1- Nvidia will bitch about AMD possibly having better dx12 optimizations or AMD could have complete exclusivity over DX13 which would be good for nobody

2- Sony will literally be giving money to Microsoft on each ps4 sold

3- NO X86

4- AMD is not profitable

5- What will Microsoft do for AMD?

6- THIS IS STILL A RUMOUR

5- What will Microsoft do for AMD?

1- As previously discussed, it's on MS best interests to keep Nvidia on the loop.

2- Not that big of a deal, it's kind of standard practice i.e. Apple buying CPUS from Samsung up until recently

3- WAT

4- That's kind of the point: MS can get their hands on tons of patents and technology for way less money than what they're really worth by buying a company on a down turn

5- Infuse massive and constant amounts of cash AMD desperately needs.

if it happens it could be the weirdest acquisition that Microsoft has ever made, and MS has bought a LOT of companies, hell IE and outlook (which back then had a completely different name) were acquisition in the 90's and they invested and owned Apple share until the mid 2000, the thing is i'm not sure how Microsoft could benefit from them, what do they gain of owning a microchip company, their software already works on all major platforms to begin with and pretty well for that matter now days

on the other hand AMD would literally get unlimited budget to make whatever the fuck they want, so AMD wins a lot in this case, unless MS is planing to expand on hardware deeply, like beyond of what is publicly available, there's no business benefit for MS, i don't see them getting into hardware as deep as Apple, especially given that OEM's got very pissed about the surface

this is one of the greatest thing that has happened to me recently, and it happened on this forum, those involved have my eternal gratitude http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/198850-update-alex-got-his-moto-g2-lets-get-a-moto-g-for-alexgoeshigh-unofficial/ :')

A change in management will mean AMD has its X86 licence revoked by intel. Shoving money into a project does not make it work, AMD is not profitable because of its reputation, if AMD next week released a GPU that was 2 times better than the titan x, and used half the power people will still buy the titan x because its "nvidia". Microsoft will have to rebrand (HA!) AMD

Nothing wrong with this, Microsoft will not "make windows run worse on NVIDIA" as they still have to sell the damn windows to everyone!

Consumer software sales aren't doing well, people are expecting everything to be free these days. I can see a world where windows is free but runs better on microsoft-built PCs. Or, worse, they no longer make windows available on anything but their own hardware. There's lots of bad things that can come from this.

If the cross license agreement gets cancelled, doesn't Intel also lose the AMD64 license, also known as x64?
