[The Escapist] Apple removes games from its online store due to use of Confederate Flags.

Given the events of the Charleston shooting, Apple has decided to remove games from it's app store if they contain the flag of the confederacy from the United States' Civil War under the grounds of symbolic racial hatred.

 

Following the racially motivated shooting in Charleston, SC that left nine churchgoers dead, Apple has made the decision to remove all games featuring the Confederate Flag from their App Store. With this move, Apple has joined the ranks of Walmart, Amazon, Sears, and Ebay, who have all stated that they will no longer sell merchandise that includes the Confederate flag.

 

According to Andrew Mulholland of HexWar, the majority of their Civil War games, including Civil War: 1862, Civil War: 1863, Civil War: 1864 and Civil War: Gettysburg were pulled with no warning due to the inclusion of the Confederate flag. "It seems disappointing that they would remove it as they weren't being used in an offensive way, being that they were historical war games and hence it was the flag used at the time," Andrew told me in an email this morning. "At the moment we're reworking the games to replace the flags that are deemed offensive. We're going to use the Confederate flag from 1861 and 1862 as the one that's considered offensive wasn't introduced until late 1862."

Update: Andrew Mulholland of HexWar Games confirmed via email that he was contacted by an Apple representative today. "They put Civil War: 1863 back on the store and we're making a few tweaks to the app icons for the other games," Mulholland said. He was told that Apple did not want the Confederate flag displayed in any app icons or prominently depicted in any screenshots.

 

Ultimate General: Gettysburg has also been reinstated, Game Labs confirmed via Facebook. "Ultimate General is back. Unchanged. After several late night phone calls with Apple yesterday and today the game has returned to Appstore the way it was... in 1863."

 

In a second post, Game Labs thanked fans for their support. "We would like to thank everyone who helped us over the last day by liking, sharing and commenting and spreading the news about the importance of keeping history the way it was. We are very humbled and overwhelmed by your support and are happy to be serving you. It is purely your accomplishment and we are grateful you helped us bring our game back."

I mean you don't see a jewish person getting offended because there are WW2 fighting games or when they see a swastika. But yet in the US if there's a flag there's a shitton of backlash, granted it is a touchy subject from the US' past when slaver was still a thing, but that was about 150 years ago! People get offended way to easily and can't deal with what there past times were it's history now folks, it doesn't matter, all that matters is that you're safe today and for the near future and that slaver has been ended!

 

TL;DR It's a double standard you can have a WW2 game with swastikas or a full on simulation game of the Nazi party but, you can't have a flag from 150 years ago. There are some days where I wish we had just let the south secede, but there were other factors that led to the Civil War - not just slavery. As a result, I'd be willing to accept that to some people, the confederate flag does not instantly represent a wish to return to slave-owning society.

 

In the end, I can respect a company's decision to curate what's on its service, but in this case I'm not sure I agree with it.

I haven't been following this push to remove confederate flags very closely, but it sounds like most censorship shit recently- Uninformed.

 

The flag is not inherently racist, it is the "Confederate" flag; not the "Slave Owners" flag. While racism played a significant roll in the Civil War, there were many other reasons people fought on both sides (i.e. not everyone who fought for the south supported slavery). As a symbol, it represents rebellion far more than it represents racism to those actually acquainted with the culture. Example, the "Confederate Air Force" (now known as the Commemorative Air Force) originally based (not sure if it still is) in Texas. The Confederate Airforce started as a non-proft that restores old war-birds and other historically aircraft. They called themselves the Confederate Air force because of the "rag-tag beginnings", once their airport was named "Rebel Field", and there were plenty of other references to the Civil War. Never had racism ever entered anywhere into the organization or their culture. According to CAF chief of staff Ray Kinney, "In many people's minds, the word 'confederacy' brings up the image of slavery and discrimination. We, in no way, are associated with that kind of stuff. So, it gives us, in a way, a black-eye."

 

I feel like this push against Nazi symbolism, Confederate Flags, etc. is caused by an ailing education system that fails to properly teach people history. Current history books don't do anything they talk about justice, it is extremely simplified. This is dangerous when history is incredibly complicated.

Future Improvements/upgrades: Rubber fan mounts, basic speakers, more ram (for a total of 16gb), replace GPU.
