How was your pc building experience?

I was doing the same thing. I had already picked out all the parts and it would have costed me a total of around $1,900.00 (USD). It had 8 gigs of ram, no SSD, a GTX 980, and an 4690k. Everything that I had picked out was extremely expensive and unnecessary so I asked around the forum. I got help and managed to build a way better build (980 ti, 4690k, 16gb ram, MSI Krait motherboard, 1 TB HDD + 250gb SSD + K70 RGB + M65 RGB Mouse) all for less than $1,600.00

 

 

 

My problem was, I started with a cheaper prebuilt, upgraded the power supply to a thermaltake tr2, then the gpu to a 750ti.  Didn't like the 750ti so I got a 960, but the motherboard had headers blocking the gpu so I had to get a new motherboard.  Got a 4690k shortly after to replace my 3258.  Then I wanted modular psu so Changed that again.  Got a hyper 212, then changed to a h110i.  realized my 960 wasnt gonna cut it so gota 970, which wouldnt fit in my case, so got a new case also.

 

My issue was that I didnt have a large chunk of money to spend, but rather I just bought/upgraded a part every couple weeks when I got paid.  Fortunately most of the parts I was able to return, and the ones I didnt are long gone in a friend's low end moba build.

My first build was a 486 DX2,I think. I remember playing mechwarrior 2 and getting random reboots. Turns out, didn't have a heatsink and fan installed, nor did any come with packaging. Had to go to radio shack and buy something generic.

That was probably my first 3D game now that I think about it. My rich friend had a PC and showed me that. I was 7-8 at the time and it blew me away. I remember being able to shoot the legs off, so cool.

It's awesome hearing your experiences! I received all my parts today except for the CPU Cooler (air), RAM, and graphics card. I installed everything that I had to install even though those 3 parts are missing (I know it was a bad idea, but I couldn't help myself!  <_<).

 

When I installed the CPU, It felt really hard pushing down the little pin even though everything was aligned! I did research and saw that it was normal. So, I pushed down and started hearing this cracking sound when pushing down and I got so scared!

 

Now, I'm paranoid that I messed up my build  :mellow: . We'll just have to see xD.

My first build was exciting and frustrating lol. Waited for my parts forever. And in my eagerness to set it all up and play i overlooked some damaged items that i regret not returning. But it sure was fun and satisfying to boot her up when i was done! Just dont let the moment or eagerness let you over look damaged items. In my case it was frayed or non working case cables.. Usb 3.0 and all my audio connectors.. But at the time i was using usb 2.0 headset and that still worked lol.

How were you able to notice that they were damaged? Was it physical damage?

Usb3.0 was missing a couple pins... Didnt realize till after the first boot up and it wasnt working then i checked... The sleeving on the audio and mic where worn like they were rubbed or something and i could see the wire it self... But the usb 2.0 and the power reset and hdd ones all worked fine... It was a nzxt 220 case i bought from tiger direct. Love the case. Just those issues with it.. Oh and dont try installing a hdd after your gpu if u got a full atx mobo in a cheaper case lol at least that one... I have a non modular psu. So cables gpu and mobo in the way of the rear facing hdd slots haha.

I have everything but the RAM, Graphics card, and CPU cooler installed. I couldn't wait any longer so I started building even though I'm missing those 3 parts. i'm still scared I messed up along the way though xD

It was fun. I was a bit impatient and installed the cooler incorrectly, scratched my case and didn't attach some screws along with no io shield. But yolo

It was spectacular going against the odds because my parents at the time didn't believe that I could do it, but they gave me a try and now I have a badass PC for a great price!

It was spectacular going against the odds because my parents at the time didn't believe that I could do it, but they gave me a try and now I have a badass PC for a great price!

My parents think the same thing xD. Just gotta prove them wrong.

Glad it went well! Even though I read the manuals, I still feel I did something wrong xD. We'll just have to see when my RAM, GPU, and CPU cooler arrive.

 

I was so slow I didn't even boot it on the first day, but its easy if you know what to do.

I had a really hard time trying to do cable management for the very first time. I guess it looks alright for my first try! xD

Having an extra pair of hands can be SUPER valuable.

I'm glad it all went smooth! I'm basically done with the build, just need to install the CPU cooler, Ram, and GPU which are on their way! Hopefully, It all works out for me being my first build! So nervous, though!

Oh since you mention its an air cooler remember to think about air flow. I have a v shappes zalman performa and i stupidly installed it blowing towards the front of the vase right in front of my rear exhaust so i had almost no air movement... The cpu fan was a little stronger so i had to reinstall the coolernfacing then other way to cool better. It still worked the first way just no where near as cool as the proper way with more air flow.

My build that's in my sig went pretty smoothly. The only problem I had was with the power button. The power button in my case wouldn't work (probably because HP OEM BS). I ended up taking apart the power button in the HP case and zip stripping the power button to the hexagonal mesh in the top of my case. Ghetto, but it works. My cable management is fantastic too.
