RAID card

I received my new RAID last week and had some problems with the drivers, fixed it today. Still working on configuring the arrays.

OS

I was using FreeNAS for a while, but the performance was way to low (5MB/s). So I upgraded to Windows Server 2012 (Student Licence) and I hope it performs better.

Usage

The 8TB volume will be used for backups, the first 3TB for my movie/anime folder, the 1TB volume will be my download folder and the second 3TB volume is for family stuff (like pictures, ...).

Of course all those drives dont fit in that case so I had to start allocating them to whever I could slide them in......

CTKaF.jpg

I have a dual xeon server which I will be using to drive everything, once I can afford a Norco 4U case to transplant everything too.

2 x E5530's, Asus Z8NA-D6C motherboard & 24GB Corsair ECC memory.

The problem is that the Norco 4U's (e.g the RPC-4224) are very expensive to ship here @ $400+ just for shipping...let alone the cost of the case itself.

(really jealous of your case looney :P)

5ach2jan.jpg

For a NorcoTek case, just send them an email and they might help you out. They helped me a lot.

with conventional raid5 the new green drive can give bad sector error, EADS are fine but anything newer may give problems.

I'm using EARX's and never had any problems with them.

I have a question,

If I want to expand my current SAN/NAS with a second RPC-4216 running the disks of the same controller (linking the cases with some SFF-8088 connectors), would that still count is the same system?

Link to comment

yes SFF-8088 and a expander is the same system. not the same chassis, but i think im gonna change that rule anyway. make it 1 system instead of chassis

so all the storage on one motherboard/cpu/ram, no matter how many cases you use.

so i have a question, what do you think should count toward the size of the system:

example system:

5x 1tb RAID 5

3x 1tb HDD no raid,

120 GB SSD

option 1:

array -parity only, only actual arrays count and minus the parity, so in case of the example system 4TB

option 2:

array -parity and non os drives, minus parity again, so in case of the example system 7TB

option 3:

all arrays and drives -parity, so in case of the example system 7,12TB

please comment to this post instead of a reply so its easy for me to see what you want.

(i vote for option 1)

Raw drive space, so 8TB, and ignor the OS drive :P

lol very tempting, it would make mine 30tb :p

ill keep it as it is (all storage minus parity and os drives)

Why did you choose a 8 core cpu? what do you run which need that much power? :)

And your running ext4 but i read on forums that xfs is the only good choise for large arrays.

I love the norco case! :)

Only 3TB for Anime, I am ashamed in you sir

thats a lot of drives in a 1200

could you post some pics please, when you do ill add you to the list.

i take it you run 2 parity drives? so 19x 2TB= 38TB

(guess i need to add more drives to mine now )

also the template has a billion enters in it, looks a bit weird :p
