Xeon v3's that can overclock?

My server is maxing out its 4790K @ 4.4 Ghz, so I'd like 8 or more cores.

 

I'd like a Xeon since I want 24/7 up time.

 

The problem is, even if I dropped in a 2695v3, 14 cores @ 2.3 Ghz wouldn't be that much more powerful than a 5960X running at 4 Ghz.  Do any of the current Xeons support overclocking and have a link for proof?  2687Wv3 would do nicely if it could run at 4 Ghz.

Xeon doesn't support overclocking.

 

But it's possible to be overclocked, Linus has done this before:

Some Xeons can be overclocked a little bit but its fairly dependent on the motherboard support.

This is a an alternative. I just picked up two intel X5660 for around $160 on ebay for my server. I would look into that as well. You get 2 x Six core CPU for a total of 12 Cores and 24 threads. Its a wet dream for virtualization.

I believe xeons are overclockable, just not by using the multipliermultiplier (so base speed only). I must say that I have read this on fora about 123* an 124* v3, so I am not 100% sure.

I've heard that some are allegedly multiplier overclockable (1680v2 and maybe 1680v3 by extension)...but I haven't been able to find any proof of it.  I'm kinda surprised no tech guy has asked Intel for review samples of the Workstation Xeon E5's to see if there's any truth to it.

Some are able to be overclocked to stay on the turbo boost multiplier no matter how many cores are loaded + 3-5% from baseclock overclocking, i seen one go 1 muilti higer than tubo boost limit, but thats all that is possible.

Well wouldnt surprice me if 1680v2 were more highly binned 4960X with 2 disabled cores enabled and different microcode.

Yes they can be OC'ed. I have my E5-2695v3 running with a FSB freq of 105 thus it's a 5% OC.

You're right that an OC 5960X comes close in certain performance benchmarks as an E5-2695v3, and in some cases performs better - lower threaded processes and per core performance. But for most server applications a single socket E5-2695v3 will perform much better than the 5960X because it has many more threads available, obviously more so with a dual socket configuration.

But all modern Xeons have a multiplier lock and can not be OC'ed that way. You should know however that the baseline freq of Xeons are never what is actually used. Most of the time all my cores are at 2.95Ghz and they TB to 3.45Ghz.

Those two sentences don't match.  :wacko:  Overclocking and 100% uptime don't get along. Xeon and reg. ECC  memory, server grade components and UPS spells 100% uptime.

And another thing? Do you have problems with the uptime on your current config? A consumer grade setup could do the job just as good in the most cases, at least as your money doesn't depends on 100% operation, then it's just stupid to take the risk of not get server grade components and a kick as service agreement with Dell/HP/IBM to deliver that promise.

Mild overclocks, like overclocking to the turbo boost frequency won't cause problems.  TDP will go up beyond spec, but that I don't care about.

 

It's a home setup so I don't make money on it.  Thus while Xeon would be nice, if I can't get it to exceed the performance of a 5960X I'll probably just drop a 5960X in there.

Xeons like non-K cpus have limited OC. You can OC via the base clock, but not by much. My Xeon can only reach up to a BCLK of 105.4, at 105.5 then the whole system will freeze. With all cores running it reaches up to 2.6-2.7GHz from the stock 2.4GHz. With single core performance, it can go up to 3.2GHz or more. From 2.4GHz turbo to 3.2GHz, that's a burst of 800MHz.

Now for that 4GHz mark you want, the only possible way is to find a Xeon with a higher stock clock speed and with the help of turbo, you can probably OC it a bit and reach 4GHz. These are the only Xeons E5 v3s with stock clocks close to 4GHz, but it's only single socket support.

Reviving this thread (holy shit it was 9 months ago?).

 

I have a 1650v3 that's going to be installed this weekend.  We'll see if ASRock can do anything to the multiplier.  I'm guessing the most it will do is allow me to set the base multiplier for all cores to the turbo multiplier.

 

And jesus my desktop has had a lot of CPUs.  5960X -> 5930K -> 1650v3.  I just want bullet proof reliability, because I don't really use my desktop very much nowadays and don't need ultra high performance from the CPU.

I can set the multiplier it looks like, but I don't think it's getting applied.

 

What happens though is Windows freezes on the boot screen where the logo is coming together.  It could be there's not enough voltage to sustain even a mild overclock of 4Ghz (I have no voltage adjustment for Vcore), but my guess is that trying to overclock a Xeon just breaks something preventing boot.  It could be something that a BIOS update would fix, but I don't see why ASRock would bother.

 

And tangent, ASRock X99 WS-E fucking destroys the Rampage V Extreme for stability.  Couldn't get the RVE to post consistently or reboot itself consistently no matter what.  ASRock board fires up every time.  My guess is Asus is trading quality / reliability for throwing a fuckload of useless features on their boards.

So, how does the "Turbo" feature the chips speak of go into affect? I have a Z10PE-D8 WS mobo with dual E5-2620 v3 and would like to consider my next best XEON value (Price/Performance) options.

Bumping this up, yes the Xeon 1650 v3 is unlocked both for multiplier and voltage.  Mine is a pretty terrible overclocker and only handles 4.2Ghz max @ 1.25V.

AFAIK:

  • All Xeon E3 are locked. I have my E3-1231v3 on 103.25MHz BCLK but that is it.
  • Xeon E5-2600 and E5-4600 series are locked for all architectures. So is Xeon Scalables.
  • Xeon E5-1600 series are mostly unlocked if used with a X79/X99 motherboard. Some bottom end ones are locked though so you need to check before committing.
  • Xeon W is unknown.

All Xeon v3+ are locked... E3 v1 and v2s are mostly locked (some are some aren't); and older is mostly unlocked afaik...
