Microsoft will give you Windows 10 for free if you test it

Ok update. Microsoft has clarified further. And it is like I was saying:

-> If you have Windows 10 Insider Preview, and you did a clean install of it. Your license remain genuine as long as you REMAIN in the beta program. If you leave, you need to buy Windows 10.

-> If you have Windows 10 Insider Preview, and you upgraded Windows 7 or 8 to it, then you can leave any time the Windows insider program, and revert back to the officially released Windows 10 build. Your license remains valid.

-> If you have Windows XP or Vista (or older and somehow try and get Windows 10 for free), or a pirated version of Windows and you want to get legit by not paying. You can't. The best you can do is the first point above, where you can get Windows 10 for free, but you become a beta tester. As a beta test, or Windows Insider, they are increase telemetry data collecting from you, you use an unstable build of Windows, you are the tester of Windows latest Windows updates, including security updates, which may results in data loss, or program compatibility issues, and be forced to upgrade to the latest build as they come, but you are exchanging all that, to have for free Windows 10.

-> Microsoft says, if you want to have Windows 10 for free, and you are currently running Windows 10 Insider Preview, and you want to get out, and remain to the last official release version, and you did a clean install of Windows 10 Preview: You have no choice to format, install back Windows 7 or 8, and upgrade to Windows 10. Do it before the free upgrade offer ends to secure your Windows 10 license.

Win10 Previewers will receive the final version of 10 as a full download for a clean install. Win7 and 8, 8.1 owners will receive upgrade versions.

As long as you have signed up for the preview and have downloaded it at least once you will receive the release version on July 29th.

 

This will be the full OS not the upgrade. You will receive a key with the download as well, at least this is my understanding.

 

If you chose to stay in the preview you will receive additional early releases before official updates are sent out. If you opt out of the preview stuff after receiving the download it does not change anything, your version will still be good and you will just receive the official updates like everyone else. 

 

People are making to hard and are thinking way to much about this. Read the article.   :D

If it isn't working absolutely perfectly, according to all your assumptions, it is broken.

Whats the point in even selling it at all? Most people already have Windows and will free upgrade but if they don't just test it and get it for free. OS should be free, go Linux!

Definitely replacing the OS on my SteamBox with this right now. I hated the compatibility and driver issues with getting non-steam games working, and I sure as hell wasn't paying $100 for an OS on a $300 machine (it's mostly spare parts).

Whats the point in even selling it at all? Most people already have Windows and will free upgrade but if they don't just test it and get it for free. OS should be free, go Linux!

Might as well make some quick bucks from the people who don't really know better. Main goal of all of this is to try to get more people to use Windows 10 instead of a bunch of people scattered on different versions.

This is silly man, just make this version free for all forever,i mean it doesnt make any sense just the testers get a free copy,most people dont have time to test or ruin their installation with a beta OS but still want to get it at launch for free.

I dont even understand how this works, i was a tester for for TP, but im not running it anymore what does that even mean? i own 8.1 and have been a tester too which one will i get?or i get two copies? makes no sense to me.

You get it for free as long as you stay with the upgrade program. So you will have the watermark, I guess, and I suspect that if you haven't upgraded to a new build in a while, they will drop you out.

Just so you all understand, it is still within the confines on the Insider Preview program. Meaning, you will continue to get more test builds after RTM build, again and again and again. The RTM build is just another build in the timeline of Insider Preview builds.

 

What @aerandir92 said is also correct, builds in Insider Preview program expire so you can't just stay on RTM build inside the Preview program forever.

 

So there is no point in staying on the Insider Preview program as a means of getting Windows for free forever unless you want to use beta builds with the heavy monitoring (for feedback/bug report collection).

According to the blog post this article links to, you can drop out of the program and keep the Final version. I wonder if that means the version you're using when you drop out, or the actual Windows 10 build though.

So do you have to be currently running the OS preview or just registered as a tester?

I ran it for a few months on my Surface Pro 2 and had to switch back because it was just too unstable for daily use.

What if you stop running the preview? are you still entitled to a key?
