My R9 390 vs. GTX 970: Surprising Results?

Suika

Theres another thread with firestrike benchmarks from the Fury X and 390x. The 390x scored 12855 at what is probably stock speeds, that's a tad more than "slightly surpassing" your own. At higher resolutions it does even better. It doesn't match a 980, but it comes relatively close and surpasses it at 5k(probably due to the increased VRAM).

Most likely when 390 benchmarks are out with updated drivers it will also surpass the score you got because the difference between a 290 and 290x isn't that great.

Mind you this is a stock 390x as well. Your 970 benchmarks are from an overclocked 970.

I don't think you were trolling, but the guy in the 390x unboxing video widely circulated online may have been, as his results don't even remotely match the new benchmarks out, and he stated the card ran really hot, yet your sample ran cooler than your 970. He also trashed the 390x because of the price he paid at BestBuy, which everyone knows is going to be more than everyone else charges. No one who knows anything about PC gaming buys GPUs from BestBuy.

or his xfx could have been complete trash... That has been known to happen in early release runs before.

look the 390x and the 980 are very close performance wise in games.

until you note the 390x is so far a rather poor overclocker and the 980 is the opposite. Overclocked benchs showed 10% differences and that dude doesn't even push his cards to the limit.

mine asus strix dc3 390 has higher score than the gtx 970 at stock tho. msi one in another forum for stock is 12k plus too for graphics score. xfx is relatively lower compare to other manufactural and evga is good at 970 so this comparison might have some tiny little problem. Sample size should be larger. maybe asking for help from other members maybe.

As long as it isn't the EVGA SC 970 that brought a bad name to an otherwise great card lineup.

First build every: Intel Core i7 4790K, Asus Z97-A/USB 3.1 motherboard, Kingston HyperX FURY 1866 2x8 16GB Kit, Gigabyte Windforce GTX 970 G1 Gaming, Corsair Obsidian 450D Black ATX Mid Tower, Samsung 850 EVO 250GB & 3TB Toshiba HDD, EVGA SuperNOVA 750W G2, Corsair H100i GTX 240mm, Gigabyte Bluetooth 4.0/Wifi Card, Logitech G700S. Running on Windows 10

Surface Pro 3: i5 4300U with 8GB of ram and 256GB SSD. Running Windows 10 Pro
