People still use disposable batteries? Everything I've been using recently is rechargeable or wired, I haven't bought disposable batteries in quite a long time. I'm not sure if I believe everything they're saying is accurate though. Why would 1.3V coming from a disposable battery be considered "dead", when a fully charged rechargable variant of the same AA/AAA/C/D battery only puts out 1.2V when fully charged, yet works fine? And why weren't these joule thief sleeves invented sooner when disposable batteries were much more of a thing?

 

The Batteriser, which is made by San Jose-based company Batteroo and which will sell starting at $10 for a four pack of devices starting in September, has been designed to work with AA, AAA, C, and D-cell batteries. The devices are basically tiny sleeves that attach directly to your batteries and try to extract as much juice as they can out of them before they finally expire.

 

While the device won’t be ready for market for another three months, it has been delivering in field tests so far.

 

“When we get a new battery it is 1.5 volts, when we use it in a device it goes down to 1.3 volts under load condition, at that point we consider it to be dead and throw it away,” explains Dr. Kiumars Parvin, Professor of Physics at San Jose State University. “We tested the Batteriser sleeve in our lab and we confirmed that the Batteriser taps into the 80% of energy that is usually thrown away.”

 

Jon Phillips writes over at MacWorld that he saw the devices in action and that they worked as advertised. He also says that while battery extenders have been around for a while, the Batteriser is really remarkable for its thinness, as the device measures in at 0.1 millimeters thick.

 

 

 

SAN JOSE, Calif. June 2, 2015 – Every year, over 15 billion disposable batteries are consumed globally. What most consumers don’t realize is that most devices only tap 20% of a battery’s energy before the device stops functioning, and the batteries are thrown in the trash. Batterisers can also be used with new alkaline batteries for similar savings and performance gains.

 

Batteriser, currently the only device of its kind, will be available for AA, AAA, C, and D-cell batteries. Retail prices will start at under $10.00 for a four pack of Batteriser sleeves.

 

Batteroo Corporation was cofounded by Bob Roohparvar Ph.D., who holds more than 20 patents in his 30-year career. Roohparvar is no stranger to disrupting the power management industry, with a prolific patent portfolio. His career spans power management, semiconductors, and consumer products. Dr. Roohparvar is also a professor at California State University, East Bay, teaching computer science and computer engineering courses.

 

“Batteroo is the first to unleash existing unused power from a seemingly powerless battery, and by extending battery life by up to eight times, Batteriser pays for itself with the very first purchased pack,” said Roohparvar. “Why throw away perfectly good batteries, or waste money buying new batteries, when we now have a technology that saves money, saves energy, and can cut the number of batteries that end up in landfills by more than half.”

The $14 billion disposable battery market is estimated to be powering 5.4 billion battery-operated devices – That’s 15 billion batteries consumed annually worldwide. Only approximately two percent of these batteries are disposed of properly. The rest are thrown away, leading to soil contamination and a laundry list of negative environmental impacts.

 

Rooparvhar credits the innovation to an intelligent voltage management and delivery mechanism. Batteroo introduces this system in the format of a sleeve that makes contact with the positive and negative ends of a common battery to access untapped remaining energy at a steady state system voltage.

That 1.3v is measured in no load condition. When a load is applied, the voltage will drop off big time. Also, rechargeable battery has a voltage rating 1.2v. But when fully charged, they can reach as high as 1.4v, and about 1v when empty.

Most devices measure % battery left by the voltage, so boosting the voltage to show 100% battery left doesn't prove anything conclusive. It probably died a few minutes later.

 

Battery operated devices will work on a range of operating voltages (usually 1.5V - 1V) and having this thing boosting the voltage in the middle will just unnecessarily waste energy. It doesn't look like it turns off when the device is turned off, so it may have a net negative effect on battery life. Company should be renamed Batterpoo.

Ive actually charged conventional batteries before. You need a multimeter and a standard battery charger. You have to keep taking them on and off the charger and measuring the voltage (keeping it from getting too high)

 

As they cool off voltage drops, so it takes a day of work to charge one fully (i.e. ~1.45-1.5V @ cold temp). But once you do they last a good while lol

 

 

 

But we should of never had 1.5V batteries in the first place. and/or devices should of had built in hardware to step them down to 1.3V.  think of all the replacement alkaline batteries that could of been saved

Why don't we just use this in batteries themselves so we don't have another thing to keep buying. Or we all switch to LIPO and call it good

Why don't we just use this in batteries themselves so we don't have another thing to keep buying. Or we all switch to LIPO and call it good

 

The question is, why isn't the circuitry in the devices in the first place? Modern LED flashlights, for example, typically have sophisticated power regulation and would not benefit from these things.

If it works that's awesome though. Could definitely use that for my Xbox controller, thing eats batteries way, way faster than my 360 controller. Thanks Bluetooth.

Really? wow! my xbox one s controller's batteries last a long time. I also just use rechargeable AA eneloop batteries anyway, so that I have at least 2 ready charged for when I need them. Pack of 4 costs approx £7.50 or so, and I've had a battery charger for about 8+ years now that I bought for around £7, very good value. They don't sell them anymore, but they have These

The batteries I bought back in around 2005 are still going strong and have decent life too, so approx £15 in-all for about 10 years or more of batteries. Would have spent way more on disposables.

I think battery technology is coming along nicely, sure it'd be great to have cellphones that last forever before needing to be charged again  etc, and when that day happens I'll be a very happy man... but if you think back to how bad some batteries were, with their memory effect, losing charge quickly etc, then compare that to some great batteries like eneloops that come pre-charged, still have approx 80% life in them if unused after a year. Then we aren't doing too badly.

I would love it if batteries became pretty much small disc sized (wafer thin), but rugged crystal structure, long life, no discharge... you could carry a load of them with you without it being inconvenient and all devices take the same ones, so it alters voltages/current accordingly... my dreams become reality :D

As long as the battery pack lasts 5 or 6 hours I'm good.

I think that they're able to make batteries last a very long time, but it wouldn't be beneficial to a lot of the electronics they're in from a profit standpoint, so we'll see them limited for a good while yet.

If this little sleeve, which costs $2.50 each at retail and uses no patented technology meaning anyone else can replicate it, did what it said it could do, every battery manufacturer would factory integrate it into some of their lines of batteries for an additional production cost about 10 cents, charge 2-3x more at retail for it, and have big signs saying 'BUY OUR MAGICAL SUPER BATTERY!  3X AS MUCH MONEY BUT 8X MORE LIFE. A HUGE VALUE!'.  Any suggestion that it would be a conspiracy by battery companies to 'keep it a secret' is laughable, because it would also be a conspiracy to have battery manufacturers not make more money.  There are shelves of batteries in every grocery store, corner store, electronics store, dollar store, pharmacy and everywhere else, there is no shortage of shelf space for battery manufacturers to bombard consumers with their own 'Magical Super Battery' if they needed and could crush some startup like Batteriser/Batteroo right out of the market all while making fistfulls more money in the process.

 

That said, the Batteriser/Batteroo does do what a boost voltage regular should do and the concept and technology is nothing new.  The problem is that the company is making widely excessive claims as to what the boost voltage regular in their product will accomplish.

That is actually the method of operation of many companies and people, whose interests are the business of making money, and not technology. Thomas Edison operated out of that philosophy, and so do modern drug companies. Some electronics are made with cheap components so that they die out sooner, or with non-replaceable batteries, so that when the battery dies, an entire new device must be bought. Oil companies are notorious for suppressing emerging technologies, and car manufacturers have also done that.

 

Patent-holders regularly spend large amounts of money to suppress competing technologies, even ones that are much better, and will buy out superior products as they're discovered, before they make it to market, and then will sometimes not do anything with the property because its more efficient, or effective, or lasting than the established variant, and poses a threat to the existing revenue level of the owner of the original technology.

This is irrelevant in this case as research into improving battery technology is constant.  We are a society that is constantly using energy through batteries and battery companies are very much looking for ways to improve things.  Mainly, any company CAN produce batteries as there's few patents protecting anything in these kinds of batteries, there's very little aside from the very specific chemistry used that varies and being able to stand out among the crowd is what sells.

Looks pretty straight-forward, to me. SamStrecker asked why a cheap longevity-enhancement might not be used, and you followed it up by asking why such designs aren't put into products by default. The answer is often 'because of forced obsolescence by design.'
