Asus Z170 motherboards round up

http://wccftech.com/asus-z170-motherboards-round-up-maximus-viii-rog-extreme-z170-deluxe/

Update: 7/26/2015

According to Benchlife.info. Slides have leaked out that Asus Z170 Deluxe, does not follow the Intel 1151 socket specs, and actually has more pins, just like what they did with the X99. While the Asus X99 OC socket's extra pins benefits with overclocking, no words on what these extra pin does on the Asus Z170 Deluxe or does it even help with overclocking. We'll have to wait for the actual release to find out. While on the subject of Asus boards, there will be another version of the Deluxe name AR which stands for "Alpine Ridge", which is the code name for the next generation of Thunder Bolt controller that doubles the bandwidth from 20GB/s to 40GB/s. No words on whether other Asus Z170 boards will have this special socket or it's just exclusive only to the Deluxe. A bit of sad news, the Z170 Pro, very first shown during this year's Computex has been canceled. There will however be a Asus Z170 Pro Gamer.

Old news

Asus's Skylake motherboard is here! So far it's only the Z170-Pro, which is their 2nd top of the line, right below the Deluxe. The Pro supports 64GB max of DDR4 memory up to 3000MHz (o.c.). 3x physical x16 slots, running at single:x16, dual: x8, and triple: x8/x4/x4. Has up to 8 SATA 6G Ports, with 2 are part of SATA Express, and a M.2, located right below the PCH heatsink. On the I/O side it has a total of 10 USB, 4 of them are 2.0, follow by another 4 at 3.0, and the last 2 at 3.1. A mini DP (could be TB, but I doubt it's that), 802.11 AC with Bluetooth, and dual gigabit lan ports, which is a first as Pro normally only has 1 gigabit lan, and if you want dual lan, then you must opt for the Deluxe.

Hate the PCIe layout. Though, at least they got the top slot right, a full 16x should never be at the top. Other manufacturers need to learn to put the first 16x second from the top as well.

But the spacing between the two topmost 16x slots is one too far apart for me. I didn't install a brutal 180mm air penetrator fan in the bottom of my case blowing directly onto the GPU area so I could have a hideous gap in between GPUs.

Is it DDR4, DDR3 or both? If it's DDR3 I'll let my brother know, he might be interested.

Blue and white and black, with no m.2?

Hope they come up with some better looking alternatives.

"Pro" branding, tons of phases in the VRMs, built-in WiFi. This is going to be expensive.

Z97? I am fine as long as they are less $200 Australian dollars of which most Z97 boards are such as as the ASUS Z97-K and Z97-C which are ~$175

Gigabyte, MSI and ASRock all make gaming Z97 boards for only around $150 or even $130.

Depends which ones you get, they span from less than $80 (=budget, IMO) to $300+

I know - but the less than $80 are generally ITX and not from Tier-1 brands like Asus. Asus wouldnt showcase a budget Motherboard, they'll always hype their $300 ones.

The spacing is done like that so with dual gpus, the first card can breath and not suffocate by the 2nd card, if there was no spacing between them. For your fan placement, where in the bottom? Bottom front or actually at the bottom of the case? Well if it's bottom front then add another one or two, for more air flow, but if it's actually at the bottom of the case, then what does that have to do with the position PCIe x16 slots? Most graphic cards are about the same length as the board itself, so your grip with the wide gap between the first two x16 slots, makes no sense. The slot layout had always been like this since their Z68 or maybe earlier boards, where have you been?

@Trik'Stari

@Zah

This one has the same color scheme as their X99. Their X99 really isn't pure white. It has blue accents too, It's just that, The X99 has a white plastic shroud running down the entire back edge of the board, that grabs the most attention.

Notice there is also some blue on the X99 Deluxe

Because reference or water cooled cards are meant for SLi/ Xfire, anyone using downdraft coolers, and thus 3+ slot cards, are doing it wrong.

By bottom I mean bottom. Of course in addition to front fans.

I was waiting for Skylake mobos from Asus to finish my mITX build.  I guess the Z170I will have to do.

Why? Do you just use the world's biggest air cooler for your CPU? The way to fit the most cards in SLI/XFire is to put the 16X slots as 1/3/5/7.

It's blended in with the motherboard PCB. The connector is located at the bottom edge of the heatsink. Can't find a M.2, then look for the screw hole mounts on the board.
