SilverStone Headphone Stand Design Contest

So cool to see people embracing this. I think the design that wins is just a SMALL part of the big picture here. There are going to be TONS (so far over 80) headphone holder designs on myminifactory that anyone can download and print :D

Is there a link to view the other applications?

I have an idea for the wall mountable stand but I am terrible at putting said ideas to 3d models on a PC, if anyone wants to collaborate feel free to PM me, I will try to diarrhea my ideas into a 3d modeler, autodesk or something, and see if I can get it to look halfway decent.

I guess you could sketch your basic ideas in paint if everything else fails... maybe someone likes your concepts and might help you with the modelling =P

From what I read in the rules, yes.

Here's my headphone stand. Fully wooden, detachable base, fits a controller (athough it's custom). But since it's wood it was really cheap to make.

I was thinking of a system that can be expanded, as your collection grows, but allows you to start off inexpensive.

Any feedback is appreciated  :)

Design is currently only for functionality. I will make it look pretty after I know if anyone is even interested in a modular

design.

Edit: Not going to submit this idea

What's the current census on using 3M adhesive (or similar) rather than plaster screws? Install without leaving a mark. Wonder if it would be strong enough to support aluminum (given it has a wide enough base to hold up anyways).

is there a 3d printing / 3d modeling section on the forum?

I have this idea of a full aluminium replica of a titan x card to do this job...

I sadly don´t have the time to replicate such a gpu. In case anyone wants to grab this idea, feel free to do so.

It would be perfect, as the holes to mount it are in the design anyway.

This is as close as I have yet come to my idea. The arms are super meh, I'm not 100% there, but the mounting, base, and wall plates are where I was focused, this design can be solo mounted, with a couple of screws into the wall, or there are plates for mounting multiple racks together, each rack could hold 2 headphones, and even the plate that can hold four mounts for 8 headphones still only needs 2 screws.

Edit: And the plate mounting screws are hidden by the headphone racks when they are mounted.

Have my first design roughed in...   Not sure I should post a pic until the voting start (wouldnt want to many similar designs)

-My questions for you-

Looking at loading, How much is a reasonable expectation?  Currently holds 75lbs no problem

How many headphones do you need to hang? 1-2 currently

Would you want modular for expansion?  Right now you just buy another...

Would it be i a high traffic area? wouldnt want to smash your head on this...

Ah dammit you beat me to the punch  :P

Well my modular idea is a bit different but I really like the concept of making it expandable.

I don't have much money to spend on headphones, or things to hang them on, but I wanted something to hang my headphones on after watching this video.

I went to Home Depot

found these for $6.99, basically it's a rubber covered bendy wire that you can mount on your wall, I'm guessing that's why there isn't a huge market for headphone stands, so many cheap and easy options. I guess if you have 500-1500 dollars to spend on a set of headphones you'd probably want something better.

FYI the following are my assumptions, but they are my answers to some of the questions being asked and what I will be designing for.

  • Manufacturing method: The EBA01 looks like it was machined aluminium, As such that's what i intend my design to use. However I dont see why silverstone couldn't use forming/casting/folding. Given that the quantity of units produced will not be massive I assume they would not be keen on custom plastic components due to tooling costs.
  • 1 or 2 head phones: Either and or both. I might make a version for each.... not sure yet.
  • Modular: if you want, personally i think modular designs are harder to make look aesthetically good.
  • high traffic area: you never know where someone will install it, design for as many scenarios as possible.
  • Mounting Method: As long as it works and is communicated in the design I cant see any reason why we cant use 3M/Screws/Magnets/Evil Magic
  • Royalty deal: Its on the competition page, you get no royalties. and your 3D file is on the webs for all to use/abuse.
  • 3D Printing Material/method: based on myminifactory and the number of designs, I assume it will be FDM process and PLA or ABS material.

Just my 2c, if you disagree with something.... good for you. :D

Edit: added 3d printing point.

Aw man I'm totally up for designing a headphone stand/wall-mount :) DM ME :) Time to get sketching. 3D modelling comes later

Please become a member of the Linus Tech Tips forum, keep writing smug remarks & let us love you. Peace out.

And what's wrong with people being willing to pay for aesthetics?

Nothing, but my points that it's really overpriced for what is essentially a hunk of wood

Made a couple of simple models yesterday, but haven't submitted any yet.

seems that whatever model I do will work good for 3D-printing, but when it comes to actual production (CNC-milling/turning) nothing have yet filled up the requirements of being easy manufactured.

will hopefully have a 3D-printed model ready and the project submitted by next week, and if I'm really lucky I'll also have the time and oppertunity to CAD/CAM the model and machine a real aluminum made prototype :)

As far as design goes, do you guys think it should support two or just one pair of headphones?
