[RUMOR] Lenovo interested in acquiring MSI gaming notebook business

It looks like Lenovo, the world's largest maker of consumer PCs, is going to acquired more and more companies.  After acquiring IBM's pc and server business, NEC's pc business, Motorola and others, it seems Lenovo's next target would be MSI's gaming notebook business.

 

In recent years gaming notebook started to become a trend in the notebook market. According to Digitime's article, demand for traditional notebooks has been weakening, sales of gaming notebooks and related peripherals have been growing and contributing strong profits. This year we can see gaming become the focus of PC manufacturers. For example Acer has entered the gaming market with the Predator brand, while Asus unveiled several new ROG-branded gaming notebooks, and Alienware launched the Alienware Graphics Amplifier alongside new gaming notebooks, which they said it will "deliver desktop-class, high-performance gaming graphics even to our most mobile laptop".

 

Thus according to DIGITimes's article, Lenovo wanted to "raise its competitiveness in the gaming notebook industry", and believed the fastest way to achieve that is to acquire MSI's gaming notebook business.

 

And it may not be a bad thing for MSI to sell their gaming notebook business, as some market watchers said. They said MSI may face strong competition from Dell, Acer and Asus in the gaming notebook market in the near future, and selling their gaming notebook business would allow them to put their focus back on to their motherboard and server business.

 

Lenovo didn't comment on this rumor, while Kitguru reported that MSI denied the rumor, saying they don't have any intention to sale the gaming notebooks business unit. They quoted words from a spokesman from MSI in UK,

 

“I believe this is just a rumour, our gaming laptop business is doing great year on year as we believe we have the best gaming products on the market,” said Kian Salehi, a spokesman for MSI in the U.K. “I can only see our business growing further!”

 

Kitguru also reported that MSI recently announced partnerships with several U.S.-based system integrator partners like iBuyPower, XoticPC, GentechPC, and PowerNotebook, to customize and upgrade its high-end notebooks. It doesn't look like MSI is getting serious in gaming notebook business with agreements like that. Thus I too don't think MSI would sell their gaming notebook business.

I'm not keen on this, looking at the "gaming" PCs lenovo already make. Plus, what would happen to things like the GT80 titan? I don't trust lenovo at the minute, especially after the snapfish incident.

Lenovo knows their shit. They make profit and they turn bad businesses good. So maybe it wouldn't be such a bad idea. However, I don't think MSI should sell it, but rather do a better marketing job.

Another way of looking at it is they might acquire MSIs creativity and add to it Lenovos ability to execute

I loved that video. But that's not enough. I walk into an IT store and all I see is ASUS everywhere! They are marketing themselves the proper way for example. I see billboards for Asus, Samsung etc. But never anything like that for MSI, maybe a few flyers here and there but that's it. At the CE&HA fair in Belgrade the MSI booth was so small, with a few mobos and GPU's displayed but that was it. Asus had a whole booth, full of products, some live demos, one of their own motion controlled cameras and a few games up and running, people would just show up to play, it was fun, they had a small room with 3 of their high end gaming laptops hooked up to driving wheels and some simulator running and so on...

Then again I have a hard time imagining Lenovo doing any of the interesting things MSI does, such as the mechanical keyboard or the epic docking station thing.

 

But I really doubt this rumor has any merit anyway.

Not at all. Their design team doesn't seem to know their target market well at all. It's all about making them sleek and sexy these days. Almost all of their recent changes have just been focusing on aesthetics, and bulldozing any useful features if they're in the way of making it look nice.
