Well, I guess I'll just see if I can get him to double check that it post and then go from there.

Unfortunately the great deal on the ASUS P5Q Pro fell through. The guy couldn't get the board to post and I don't feel like chasing an unknown problem that very well could be corrupted bios. Oh well.

I had identical problems with my P5Q Turbo. I got it working properly for a short while after hours of screwing around, and then it had RAM slots 1&2 die...so definitely not worth the hassle.

I'm very interested in doing this.

I have an MSI G31M3-L V2 sitting around collecting dust - it supports 1333 FSB (Q9650) according to the CPU support list. Would I be good to go with the mod?

its a pretty bad board tbh and you would not be able to run the cpu at much more than stock speeds. if your ok with buying a x5450 and running it at 3ghz then i suppose its fine.

I will soon be upgrading from C2D E7300 to Xeon E5450 http://www.aliexpress.com/w/wholesale-xeon-e5450.html?spm=2114.01010208.0.324.wKsJvB&initiative_id=RS_20160221041636&site=glo&shipCountry=SRB&SortType=total_weight_score_desc&SearchText=xeon+e5450, first wanted to upgrade to X5450, but saw the TDP, and decided to go with E5450 ene thougt the X5450 is cheaper. This will need probably to deliver to me for at least 2 weeks, so I will buy for that time this cooler http://www.itsvet.com/hladnjak_lc_power_cosmo_cool_lc_cc_120-pdaa1-24.i?id=1781, which is around 23.61 USD. I will clock on my Asus P5K/EPU motherboard. I hope everything will go ok :).

I mostly use now my PC for photography and video editing and apps like Premiere Pro CC, Lightroom, etc., so I think I will benefit of getting this CPU. Later this year, I will get some SSD, since I have 2 1TB drives for storage from WD (blue and green).

Hi guys, first post :)

I've had my 775 board for years, it's been my daily PC since 2008 I think? Used a SLACR Q6600 at stock speeds for nearly all that time, then changed it out for a E8600 which I took up to 4.0Ghz after realising what my mobo could do. Right now it's quite nice, single core performance on a par with my wife's i5-6200U laptop.

Anyway, time to try this mod. I have an Asrock P43Twins1600 mobo which runs my E8600 nicely, with 2 x 2GB sticks of 800Mhz Corsair memory. I also have other family members with a Gigabyte EP43-S3L running a Q6700, and an ASUS Rampage Formula (X48/ICH9R) running a Q9450, so they're both interested in how I get on with the mod.

I've found a cheap X5460 (SLANP - the chip was bought before I realised I could have got the SLBBE).

Any tips based on the board I have or the other boards I've mentioned? The two P43 boards would appear to support the X5460 OK, not sure about the X48 board as Delidded.com don't mention it but another ASUS X48/ICH9R board only supports X3xxx CPUs.

Thanks to all who've contributed to the thread, great info for those thinking about doing the mod.

it will not work for the x38 or x48 chipset boards so the rampage formula will have to stick with a socket 775 cpu. the P43 should both work fine with the x5460.

Hi thanks for the info - another quick question, should I mod the BIOS file before fitting the X5460? Is there any use in doing that now rather than after the mod?

Thanks for the advice! I upgraded to the latest BIOS then went ahead and modded the BIOS with the 10676 (C0) microcodes as mine is a SLANP. Flashed that, then did the mod.

Currently sitting at 3.8Ghz, 1.35 Vcore in BIOS (1.3 as read by HW monitor), NB, SB, and VTT are set to middle, and DDR memory is set to 400FSB  as is the FSB jumper. CPU is reading 55 degrees. This is just the same settings as I used for the E8600 I was running at 4.0Ghz. What sort of voltages do these X5460s need, any ideas before I start lowering the volts?

Thanks again!

P.S. Ran Geekbench 3 32-bit - 2018 SC, 7099 MC. Pretty good numbers IMO, I've definitely improved the PC from the old Q6600 I had running at stock settings.

Thread is old but what chipset would be better?

680i vs Q965?

I got a 680i LT SLI and a Asus P5B VM-DO...delidded says that a E5440 is confirmed working on the P5B VM-DO.

I have a dumb question or two for anyone willing to answer. I am planning to build something like this myself (I will list the Motherboard and CPU after the question.) but something crossed my mind as I started doing research into this topic. I couldn't find a lot of information on if a set up like this could actually get Support for either Directx 12 or Vulkan. considering that I may either go one of two ways, my question is does anyone in this (or the othe topic talked about right here

) have Support for either API's?

I was wondering if any of you have a problem where the BIOS recognises the CPU (E5410) but windows just goes to the loading screen without showing the spinning dots and it just sat there... so I decided to let it do its thing overnight and when I woke up it was still just on the booting screen without any of the dots showing up. my motherboard is an Intel DG45ID (chipset P45/P43/G45/G43 *said CPU-Z*)  and I looked it up and there is nothing about the mod with this motherboard out there. pls help

Straight up: Avoid doing anything out of spec on Intel's reference boards. They are known for being utterly terrible for anything other than standard use.

Well that sucks I wasted 10$ on this lol. Well if you have any suggestions at all that would be nice but ok.... ATM I'm using a pentium at 2.6 GHz with 2 cores and I'm broke so I'm just looking to get something for cheap any cheap birds you think this works on that you can link me to would be lots of help. Thanks

At the very least, look at Asus's P5K motherboards-I ran my Xeon X5450 on a P5K-VM board of theirs (without needing to mod the BIOS). Though 3.2GHz is the limit for a 45nm quad core on that board.

I did this mod on a $20 Dell Optiplex 380 (G41). The X5470 worked even though it's 120W and most Optipods won't go over 95W.

IMO it's better to notch the CPU. than mod the socket. The pins in that area are marked "reserved". They just leave room to notch the socket.

These are sold taped and notched on Ebay. The socket mod allowed me in the heat of the moment to stick an E6500K in the wrong way and roast a $15 MB.

I wouldn't have given $20 for the Opti if it didn't have a valid Win7 license sticker on it.

It ended up 8GB DDR3 and a GTX1060 3GB.

how is the overclocking on the higher end xeon's if you get to trying it out? you could use CPUFSB or SETFSB to mess around with overclocking if bios does not allow.

i want to dip in 775 overclocking. and not sure if just getting a crap load of X5450's is a better idea rather than a highest end xeon's..?

X5450's are the best for overclocking i think? along with E5450 if you need lower TDP?
