Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut. The Ultimate thermal paste? You can actually buy it now :D

Recommended Posts

Posted · Original PosterOP

We will start off with this video which i saw (i was actually watching it live on twitch). They made some pretty big claims in this. 6c better temps than your average thermal paste.

I managed to win a pack of this stuff on the live stream and so i thought i would put it to the test on something with a big heat output.

The test Rig

AMD Phenom II X4 965 with a nice and warm 125TDP@ 4.126ghz on 1.5v for a bit of extra warmth

Asus Crosshair V Formula Z

Alphenfohn Matterhorn REV B CPU cooler doing a surprisingly good job for a single tower cooler

G.Skill Ripjaws Z

EVGA Geforce GT610 2GB in the 3rd slot to minimise heat interference from the gpu

Samsung Spinpoint F1 250GB HDD

Corsair CX500M PSU

I dont have a case so this test was done open air on a box.

The ambient temps during these tests was 22-23c which is pretty warm.

As a bonus i tested a few different fans with the rubbish paste as well.

First of all i tested some no brand white ceramic thermal paste. with a couple of different fan configs

1st up was the stock Alphenfohn fan that came with the cooler. This fan was spinning at its maximum speed which is 1500RPM, as this fan comes with the cooler, this is the cheapest option to use with this cooler.

gallery_16915_854_383327.jpg

as you can see with the stock fan the temperature hit a maximum of 56c, this is a perfectly safe temp for an AMD cpu, but i wan to run a bit more voltage than this and as i am getting upto the 62c max temp of this chip.

The next thing i tried was just adding a 'better' fan, this is a ocuk special. this is a 1850RPM fan, so even though it moves more air it is louder.

gallery_16915_854_38158.jpg

this brings a 2c decrease which isn't bad for a £3 fan :D

next up i have tested the best possible case for this heatsink. two delta 3900RPM fans in push pull, this will make sure the cooler is dissipating as much heat as it can possibly transfer with the standard paste.

image_id_1396985.jpeg

image_id_1396986.jpeg

gallery_16915_854_158745.jpg

That is a 5c drop on the better single fan setup which is very good.

So now that the extreme fans are on, i will change the thermal paste.

P1010019.JPG

gallery_16915_854_352105.jpg

that is a 6c difference, giving me an overall decease of 13c in total. this may not seem much, but when you consider that this is a 23% drop i temperature that will give a lot more overclocking headroom. it also means that a single tower cooler like this can match or exceed the performance of a dual tower cooler or aio that could be using the stock fans and paste. i was quite shocked by this as i expected to see maybe 1-2c difference.

Damn that's quite the drop i'm guessing its gonna be around £20 a tube considering IC diamond is £13 from Amazon. Nice review BTW.

it is expensive, but you get a pretty big syringe of it. they are suppose to be doing different sizes in future, so you can just buy a small amount. i have enough for about 25-50 cpu's.

I kind of want some to try vs my gelid GC extreme, which seems to be one of the top 3 right now from the testing I've seen.

Yeah, I want them in the U.S as well. But that is some expensive thermal paste. GC-Extreme is a very good paste. But, why can't you use CL Ultra on the iHS, and not just and the die.

any idea how the hydronaut works compared to the kryonaut? (kryonaut is sold out in all but the 1gm package)  i noticed the hydronaut is 11.8wm/ k and the kryonaut is 12.5.  Gelid claims 8.5 same with mx-4 (what I use now).  should I go for a couple of the 1gm kryonaut or get almost 8gm of hydronaut for the same price?  i'm using noctua nh-d14 with aftermarket fans so I dont know if my air cooling would even be able to take advantage of the kryonaut.

any input appreciated!

thanks

hydronaut is about the same as gelid, but is suppose to be cheap per gram.if gelid extreme is cheaper than hydronaut then i would go for that

After i watched that vid a while ago i started looking for reviews and der8auer did a comparison (same overclocker from the vid) with many TIMs, it's the non metallic TIM in the market basically. Also, on a side note, der8auer is so cute...so i may be biased.
