A/B Switch V0.5 - Completed

Jaybird

A/B Switch

~ Completed ~

This will be an ongoing project and as such there will be no point of completion. The purpose of this project is build an A/B switch as the current market does not meet my needs in quality or specifications. Right now, If i want to use my desk speakers I have to put it into my computer. However, If i want to use my headphones with the inline microphone, I have to unplug my speakers and plug in my headphone to a mic+audio slitter into my pc. it is highly cumbersome to have to get up and do this so i am building this switch. The best part about 4 pole jacks is that a 3 pole plug can fit and work with them. This means i am able to leave my splitter plugged into my pc. from the splitter i will run a 4 pole male to male plug to a 3.5 jack on the box. the box with then split the connection to either A or B depending on which is selected using the switch.

Parts:

  • 4 PDT switch
  • Prototype PCB
  • Aluminum Box
  • 3.5mm 4 pole jack
  • Headphone Amp
  • USB jack
  • Right Angle Header
  • 2 Pin IDC Connector
  • Wires

I am going to add a headphone amp cause i got the room in this big box.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/MAX4410-micro-headphone-amplifier-board-1-8v-5v-/251926787187?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3aa801b473

I am going to replace the bottom 3 header pins for right angled header pins so i can mount it to the big pcb, perpendicular like, cause perpendicular is future tech, 3D amazing. I do want to change the power header pins out for ones that have the locking connector, as shown bellow. much like a pc fan header but just 2 pins. the power is 5v max so i figured i could attach a usb female header to the big pcb as well, shown bellow. then just wire everything up. i assume the 3.5 on the amp is redundant but if it is not, I will just dosoler and solder wires too it, or just put a cable in and cut the cable and attach wires to the external 3.5 jack. parts are coming from china so i might just make the ab switch work then come back and ad the amp later as it will take 4 weeks for the amp to arrive.

Only one question: Why not use a rotary switch?

Like position 1) off

2) on 1

3) on 2

4) on both

Mail time! I should be able to finish the first phase of this project tomorrow, all things considered. however, I am debating waiting on the amp to arrive before i begin to drill any holes just incase i run into a discrepancy.

Subbed and something like this would be handy for me as well  :)

I might be working on a smaller form factor model this summer. in which case i might make a few and possibly do a give away here on the forums.

update:

I started soldering phase 1 of the project. soldering was a tedious difficult task and upon completion of soldering I would have opted to solder earthing to gather slightly different. It was my first time working with this type of pcb. I was quite happy with the results and how solid all the connections are. from the top I find it asthecily pleasing. from the bottom, not so much. but that's the hidden part so really it doesn't matter. upon completion, I tested the device. all ports are functional including the microphone. now all that is left is for the amplifier to arrive and to drill holes in the end caps for the 3.5mm jack, switch toggle, and eventually the knob for the amp.

Update:

One more piece of this puzzle has arrived. The build quality actually looks very good for how cheap it was. Sound quality may differ; I will be able to test once i finish hooking everything up;so not right now. I have changed out the two 3pins for right angled ones. was actually kinda trick to do when the holes are filled with solder. The pins are precises but not perfect. so it takes a little pressure to get the amp to attach to the main pcb. The next task will be to wire the amp up which I will do another day.

I need some help. I am looking for a panel mount usb. I like this one but the female end is facing the wrong direction and would look like a tumor. I would prefer a flush. the usb is going to power the amp so data is not required. I just want something that looks clean with a bezel. I could solder a usb connector to the pcb but me trying to cut a square hole to my standards is like shoving a camel through the eye of a needle.

it will probably suck. 75% guarantee of that. amp was only $8 and shipped direct form china. but its the thought that matters. and if it do, ill just take it out and stick with what outputs from my pc. I will test everything before i start drilling holes in the case.

opinion needed: Should i make my own knurled knob or should i buy a pre-made one? either way it will be gold. gold is happening.

mine: this is just a brass endcap for plumbing.

bigger is always better lol

My mind is hurting

The thing is the brass cap is big but I would have to construct something that would screw into the cap and slide into the knob. I have no idea how to go about this. I could glue it but I don't want it to be perminate, in case I need to take it out for what ever reason. On the other hand, That other cap is prefab and will work instantly and cost less. There needs to be a guy that makes custom parts for what ever you want for really cheap.
