A/B Switch V0.5 - Completed

Jaybird

Update:
Found some free time this weekend and so I am planning on completing the project today. I will still periodically be searching for an amp that can fit inside of this thing but until then I will just stick with what I have. I have marked out the location for the holes to be drilled. In a few minutes I will be leaving to go to the hardware store to pick up 2 drill bits. I hope they have the size I need as I have a high tolerance to meet. There is not much in terms of surface area for the nut to cover. Force is not the issue in my case. It is my lack of drill skills. I don't want to scratch or tork the metal as I won't be able to fix or replace easily. Just need to go slow and steady.

Update:

This update marks the offical completion of the A/B Switch project. I enjoyed working on this project. It is not a difficult project and in theory should not have taken as long as I did but in order to look first class on the outside, you have to make it first class on the inside.

Drilling holes in anything material always makes me nervous when I know that the hole will be on the exterior and people will be looking at it. I do not have the steadiest hand for drilling and this was very much proven today. for what ever reason, I cannot drill a circular hole. They always come out triangular. They are mostly round but tend to have 3 points were the curves are the tightest. One major factor that concerned me was not if I drill the hole straight but if after I drill and begin to assemble, I will find that the switch does not fit the hole due to elevation constraints of where the pcb is in the case. I thought about this as I was leaving for the hardware store and when I was washing the pencil marks and shavings off after drilling and filing. I dont know if it was luck but as I began to assemble, I began with the back as it was the most difficult side to assemble, if I were to do it last. I move around to the front and screwed in the headphone jack, then the switch, then the 4 screws for the cover. I noticed that I had put the cover on upside down; one side is slightly beveled. I undid everything and was trying to position the switch into the hole and realized that the hole is just offset on the y axis just enough that the cover fits one way but not the other. with both sides of the cover being painted it was not a deal breaker that the slight beveled edge is to the inside and you really wouldn't even know if you were not looking for it. Everything is now attached and I could not be happier with the results. It goes great with my headphone and truly looks first class.

If I ever get around to make A/B Switch 1.0 I will possible consider making an extra to give away here in the forums with a Heaven Society giveaway. no guarantee on when that project will start as it will be a major project for me.

Edit: I hate feet because with make things wibble and wobble. a pad is much more stable.

well the secret to no wobble is good feet, flat surface or 3 feet since it will not wobble that way lol

I have a feeling if i did that it would look something like this.

hqdefault.jpg

the case is only 2" tall. so feet would need to be a maximum of 1/4" tall.

well if you were keeping up, youd know there was an amp at one point. it took up a little bit of space. I am still looking for some other amp but I will spend more than $8 if someone can guarantee it will sound good.

ya ive looked into those before but my current audio standings render it near useless. plus i graduate in 7 months and I have no idea where I am living after that so I am trying to minimize my junk collection. at this rate i am going to need a u-haul for my closet alone.

I don't either. Apparently some people, you guys know who you are, think I need feet. I joke. But really I don't plan on adding feet as things on my desk don't really move and it is currently sitting on the edge of my jumbo mouse pad.

lol my keyboard doesn't have feet but it has weight behind it unlike your ab switch that seems like it would move if you tried to plug in an audio cable.

It does. And it lifts when I am toggling the switch cause it needs about 3lbs to move.
