News Everything you need to know about Tesla’s new household batteries

Source 1: linustechtips.com/everything-you-need-to-know… OP: Victorious Secret

Source 2: gizmodo.com/everything-you-need-to-know…

  • titled the Tesla Energy

  • “Our goal is to fundamentally change the way the world uses energy.” - Elon Musk

  • home battery is called the Powerwall, business battery is called the Powerpack

  • they’re “completely sustainable, zero carbon.”

  • Powerwall increases the capacity for a house with solar panels, and can be used during power outages

  • can fit on the wall in your garage or outside wall of your house

  • 3 feet across, 4 feet tall, 6 inches deep

  • 10 year warranty

  • selling price to installers is $3500 for 10kWh and $3000 for 7kWh

  • business battery prices yet to be revealed

  • working with certified installs for the Powerwall, should take 2 people 30-60 minutes to install

  • can order now at teslaenergy.com, set to release late summer

  • the Powerpack will become available later this year with a larger push in 2016 when they move to the gigafactory

  • already ~300 homes with the Powerwall batteries, and a dozen Walmart stores in California and a Cargill animal processing plant have the Powerpack batteries

  • plans to be in Germany and Australia by the end of the year

  • also a lot of potential to be used in developing countries

  • up to 9 Powerwalls can be stacked together in a home (90kWh)

  • Musk is using it at home, but doesn’t have enough roof space to go 100% solar (“I think it’ll probably be 2/3 solar power when it’s all said and done.”)

  • Powerwall specs:

    • Energy: 7kWh or 10kWh

    • Continuous power: 2kW

    • Peak power: 3kW

    • Round trip efficiency: >92%

    • Operating temperature range: -20C (-4F) to 43C (110F)

  • will be available in a range of colors

  • entire world could go renewable (primarily solar) with 900 million Powerpacks (business-grade batteries)

  • to make all heating, transportation, and other energy renewable, we would need 2 billion Powerpacks

  • Musk does not think that number is unreasonable as we refresh approximately 2 billion cars & trucks every 20 years

  • needs to be many gigafactories in the future - not something Tesla wants to do alone, they want other companies to build their own gigafactory-esque manufacturing plants

  • they will be open-sourcing patents for Powerwall, Powerpack, and the Gigafactory as always

  • “This path that I’ve talked about, the solar panels and the batteries, it’s the only path that I know that can [eliminate unnecessary CO2 emissions]. And I think it’s something that we must do, and that we can do, and we will do.”

Skyrim paid mods are gone

Source 2: steamcommunity.com/announcements…

  • payment feature being removed from Skyrim workshop

  • all money spent on mods will be refunded completely

  • Bethesda and Valve are in agreement on this

  • “We’ve done this because it’s clear we didn’t understand exactly what we were doing”

  • goal was to put a share of the rewards in the hands of the community creators

  • also “We wanted great mods becoming great products, like Dota, Counter-strike, DayZ, and Killing Floor.”

  • GabeN claims this has cost Valve $1 million in time spent dealing with the blowback

  • those who think it was Valve being good guys may be misguided as the overall revenue from this was only $10,000

  • Quote: “It didn’t make financial sense for Valve to push paid mods — $10,000 in revenue cannot possibly overcompensate for the potential loss of millions of dollars from angry emails and messages, especially when you’re losing your customers’ trust in the process.”

China to start officially rating its citizens, including behavior online

  • nationwide electronic system called the “Social Credit System”

  • each of the 1.3 billion citizens of China get a score for their behavior

  • Chinese press has shown the system focusing on financial credibility only, but German reports have unveiled a more intriguing side of the story

  • based on various criteria ranging from financial credibility to criminal record to social media behavior

  • from 2020 onwards, each adult citizen will have a credit code that goes along with their identity card

  • was actually put in place last year, but no attention had been paid until now since there was no translated English document

  • 'With the help of the latest internet technologies the government wants to exercise individual surveillance'

  • compared to the surveillance of East German citizens after the war, but apparently it is “far more ambitious: it is clearly an attempt to create a new citizen.”

  • deliberate effort to promote “socialist core values” among citizens like patriotism, respecting the elderly, working hard and avoiding extravagant consumption.”

  • bad “credit code” can result in being ineligible for certain jobs, housing, or credit to start a company

  • some experts think Chinese internet companies like Tencent will go along with the gov’t

  • different practices than US companies, they see themselves as being “in a symbiotic relationship with the government”

  • “prolonged playing of video games” will reflect badly on a person, while buying diapers indicates responsibility and therefore scores well

  • Government sources state that this is a result of the trend in Chinese society over recent decades ‘from a society of acquaintances into a society of strangers'

  • As a result moral conduct has suffered: 'When people's behavior isn't bound by their morality, a system must be used to restrict their actions'. Therefore it is time for the 'Social Credit System', which covers 'four major fields: politics, business, society and justice.'

  • important to keep in mind that the business culture in China is very different, and doing business in China is risky without a mechanism like this according to professor Wang Shuqin, as about half of signed contracts are not kept

  • still a big concern in terms of privacy

  • Michael Fertik, a Silicon Valley entrepreneur said “'It certainly feels about as Orwellian as your nightmares would have it be. On the other hand, it is probably a fairly inevitable evolution - an updated, Big Data version - of the longstanding Communist Party's grading of China's citizens. It's exactly what any Command state would like to do with data.”

  • used renewable energy to create it

  • commissioning phase took only 4 months

  • “The product liquid is composed of long-chain hydrocarbon compounds, similar to fossil fuels, but free from sulfur and aromatics and therefore burns soot-free”

  • energy can be harnessed from solar, wind, or hydropower

  • used to heat water to temperatures in excess of 800 celsius

  • steam is broken down into oxygen and hydrogen through high temperature electrolysis (electric current passed through a solution)

  • hydrogen is mixed with carbon monoxide under head and pressure to create the hydrocarbon

  • in addition to being more environmentally friendly, the process is very efficient (around 70% yield)

  • actually utilizing the Fischer-Tropsch process known to scientists since the 1920s

  • Audi admits that what they’re doing is definitely not new, but say that their adjustments (higher temperature) increase efficiency and makes it more feasible in the long term

Source 3: bgr.com/2015/04/28/samsung-galaxy-s6-s6-edge-ram-management/

  • Many Galaxy S6 owners at the XDA forums have noticed poor RAM management on their devices.

  • Causes app crashes to occur much more frequently than on older devices.

  • Android is designed to remove older apps from memory to free up RAM for current tasks, but the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge seem to take it too far despite having 3GB of RAM.

  • Phone keeps killing processes of apps like Whatsapp, Chrome and Facebook resulting in a reload of the app when you switch back to it. They would usually be allowed to stay in memory for fast loading.

  • May be fixed with a software update.

  • The issue may be more related to Android 5.0 Lollipop more than Samsung’s own software overlay.

  • Lollipop does have a memory leak issue, but that doesn’t make the OS aggressive against keeping apps in memory on other devices.

  • The US Navy has invented a type of transparent material that is far more durable than glass.

  • The US Naval Research Laboratory has been researching it for the past 10 years.

  • The material, known as Spinel (magnesium aluminate), is made from a special type of synthetic powdered clay and is bulletproof.

  • Spinel can also be molded into virtually any shape you like.

  • Spinel does not block the infrared light. Which means the material is suitable for use on camera lenses as well as smartphone screens or even for head-mounted face shields.

  • If the Spinel is subjected to damage, it will only chip, as the crack is deflected by the hard crystals in the material.

  • The technology has been licensed to a company that has been able to make Spinel in larger quantities to suit any application and the NRL now plans to share its production method with the rest of the US defence industry.

Little copy-paste from my Youtube comment...

I kindda feel that there shouldn't be LTT fans unless Linus wants to set up the equipment to test fans in the first place. His name is supposed to go on what he feels are the best, but how is that going to happen if he can't test them well enough? Or am I missing something here? An exhaustive testing of fans would really set LTT apart because this is an alley few people have explored. We've so far mostly just buy fans from word of mouth. Something has to change.

What do you guys think?

This'll be the last time I'll comment on the whole paid mod situation.

I really feel that this whole situation by everyone could have handled this situation a lot better, but at the end of the day I'm said that paid mods are gone. I think that several of the Starbound devs have brought up some pretty valid point with regards to the situation.

Guys you should put a message in the beginning of the show saying something along the lines of "Do not watch with headphones or in a quiet environment" or "WARNING: Ear Destroyer protocol initiated! Sound level inconsistency activated! Ear Destroyer starts in 3... 2... 1... ED protocol activated. Be advised - inconsistency loaded at 100%, proceed with caution!" (not a bad idea for an intro slogan too :)). Seriously even though you have the most interesting of all the shows/podcast I watch on youtube(and I watch a lot), yours have the worst audio where I have to constantly adjust the volume(I'm usually watching on a laptop or phone with the speakers on, I wouldn't dare try with headphones), you guys are constantly switching between talking normally and being super excited and screaming crazy in addition to moving close and then away from the microphone which also affects audio levels. Don't take this the wrong way, I enjoy the show, I'd just appreciate it even more if the audio get fixed.

Holy shit the Chinese stuff, I'm from a post communist country and what their government is doing is a communist dictatorship paradise(hell for the people), like there was a system in my country during communism what served a similar purpose, idk how to explain it in English but it's something like in every street or apartment building one of the residents in one of the households/apartments is a "snitch"(communist party member too obv.) -  he/she reports everything unusual or of interest to the government about the people living in said street/building. "Homeless" people had this function too. You don't know who this person is so you must be cautious of what you do or say even in front of your friends. The Chinese thing seems like a modern version of this except that is more structured and public.

NO! It's art, it's colonialism and you'll never get it!

It is kinda of a douche thing to not pay salary employee's overtime. My dad gets treated like that, and he buts his ass off for the company he works for (he does more work than his bosses, I can guarantee that. Those rich assholes spend the majority of their day on golf courses, and usually have no idea what is actually going on) and it really pisses him off.

This may be a stupid idea but well...

concerning the "fans project" would't it be nice to have more like high end vinyl stickers with LTT logos to cover up center stickers on normal fans, and the same on the side of psus? So everyone could chose their fan of choice (price to performance, color, size etc) and hide the ugly back warnings with a nice LTT logo (without having to ship fans overseas for international... fans ^^) and you could also do case badges or side panel "fist bump" or plain LTT logo stickers for example...

If you want something more.... tangible, what about fan grills? No need to replace fans in perfect working order an I don't know how other people work but when I do a build I tend to order all my stuff from the same place to save up up shipping and may not be able to factor in the premium for high en fans (from overseas) at the time of the build but pimping out the case a month or so later would be more... reasonable.

Just an idea like that , personally I'd be much more interested by this kind of idea and no problems with promoting an certain brand of fans where there are plenty of good fans out there (and no favoritism this way).

Battery power for solar has been tried before, and it has failed. The limitation is one of technology, the batteries have limited charge cycles, and lose capacity with each charge cycle. The issue with this is that, people who have installed a battery system instead of a reverse meter to put power back into the grid and receive a credit for them, have not saved money.

They will see lower bills for the first few years, but then the battery begins to fail the self tests, and then they need to replace it for a cost higher than all of the money that they had saved.

This is why the market has moved to people pumping the money back into the grid, and thus offsetting their electricity usage during the day (a decent system will essentially generate enough power to cover your electrical use, with some extra to put back into the grid. The credit then works to help offset the electrical energy that you use at night. This offers a consistent ROI, that will essentially last the life of the panels (upwards of 25 years depending on the quality).

My post talking about the show on YouTube .....

"LinusPhysiologyTips ..... "Skin has blood behind it and blood is red." - Linus I LOL'ed so hard when you said that.

By the way this was a great The WAN Show. When we get to see more of your personality in shows it helps as we watch not only for tech info. but entertainment.  Please try to keep the shows like this way more often.  I found in the past year at times The WAN Show was getting to be too rigid and seemed like a commercial spot and newscast and nothing more. I understand being professional but you can do that without becoming robotic."

My post talking about the show on Vessel .....

"Despite my worry with the guest u were having on well the show ended up being very good. I like when your show allows for your personalities to come out. I watch the show yes for tech but I also watch the show to be entertained and those shows where it seems too rigid, commercialized & u stick to the script well that doesn't sit well with me & others I assume. Good show this week."

I decided to share both of my posts from elsewhere here to get a point across and that is while The WAN Show is part of something that makes Linus and company money it is important they need to keep the show entertaining.  I stopped watching much of regular tv programs because what I got on YouTube and Twitch and so on was better than and different than what was on tv.  If you become just like a newscast / commercial then The WAN Show loses quite a bit of it's appeal.  I look forward to more informative but also entertaining shows in the future.  Best of luck to Linus with The WAN Show for the rest of 2015 and far into the future.

Your merchandise choices suck already. Sorry for the brutal honesty. You need more designs/diversity. Branding someone else's fans would be a terrible decision. Why not instead offer precut circles or something similar people could use to stick onto their fans if they wanted if you really need to brand some fans ffs. It feels like you are missing a huge opportunity.  Is it just me or is Logan's shop far and away the best Youtuber's store.....  There is no reason LTT shouldn't have a kickass store with tons of merch.  Sorry for the rant but someone has to say something and not just blindly vote on some strawpoll.
