[mini-news] Nvidia Releases first Windows 10 beta drivers

shermantanker

Today Nvidia has released its first beta graphics drivers for Windows 10 for both 32 and 64 bit machines. The new drivers are the first steps toward future DirectX 12 support for Nvidia cards. DirectX 12 was introduced over a year ago at the Game Developers Conference and promises users a significant increase in existing graphics performance and energy efficiency over DirectX 11.

Supported GPUs

  • 900 Series: GeForce GTX TITAN X, GeForce GTX 980, GeForce GTX 970, GeForce GTX 960
  • 700 Series: GeForce GTX TITAN Z, GeForce GTX TITAN Black, GeForce GTX TITAN, GeForce GTX 780 Ti, GeForce GTX 780, GeForce GTX 770, GeForce GTX 760, GeForce GTX 760 Ti (OEM), GeForce GTX 750 Ti, GeForce GTX 750, GeForce GTX 745, GeForce GT 740, GeForce GT 720, GeForce GT 710, GeForce GT 705
  • 600 Series: GeForce GTX 690, GeForce GTX 680, GeForce GTX 670, GeForce GTX 660 Ti, GeForce GTX 660, GeForce GTX 650 Ti BOOST, GeForce GTX 650 Ti, GeForce GTX 650

Not really sure if the current drivers people have been using were causing any serious issues, but I haven't look much either. Anyway it's cool to have some drivers from team green this early in the testing process.

This is old old news, I've had WDDM2.0 & DX12 on my computer for at least a month now.

Edit: Ah yes, here's my driver info

I don't get it. I thought nvidia and AMD both already worked on windows 10.

I know personally I have even run directx12 benchmarks on my R9 290.

Windows 10 drivers are new for Nvidia. Windows 10 tech preview users were installing Windows 8 drivers.

Also the drivers allows DirectX12 execution on both Kepler and Maxwell based GPUs. Previous versions did not. Now we need content, and of course lots of bug fixes to these drivers.

MS have DX12 WDDM2 drivers on Windows Update for both AMD & Nvidia and have done since launch. Windows 8.1 drivers do not support DX12. I know this for a fact because when Future mark released the API test a month or so ago they said to run the test fully you'll need Windows 10 (obviously) but you'd also need to remove your driver and install the one from Windows Update otherwise the DX12 portion of the test will fail. I can verify that its true as I've personally tried both AMDs 15.4 driver and Nvidias 350.12 on my R9 280X and my 3 week old GTX 970, with the 8.1 driver the API test fails on the DX12 test.

AMD drivers for windows 10 get automatically delivered via windows update. They seem to be ahead of NVIDIA. DirectX12 support was added for my R9 290. I even tested it using the 3d mark suite since there are no real games. Was able to see the massively improved draw call performance compared to DX11 which everybody was buzzing about.

In all honesty, that card probably doesn't meet the requirements for DirectX 12.

It does for DX11. I don't see why it shouldn't get DX12. After all, we don't know the requirements yet.

They will in july. Is there really any practical reason to release a beta before then?

The same reason you release a beta at all - gather data. There are plenty of people running Windows 10 right now to draw data from and start working on potential fixes. Why not get ahead of the curve and have your software out there in the field getting tested before it gets slammed during the official release period of Windows 10?

Indeed. I'm a Windows 10 TP user with an AMD GPU. I'd love to have a proper beta driver. Is there any practical reason? Yes. The same reason NVIDIA felt it needed to release a proper beta driver.

Fair enough, but my point it, since the 8.1 driver seems to work nicely, and Windows 10, being more of an update (primarily GUI), kinda like 8->8.1, maybe it just isn't necessary. At least not yet. I'm sure there will be a DX 12 Beta, unless MS and AMD has worked so closely, there is no real need.

Or put in another way: Are there things, that does not work with the 8.1 drivers in Windows 10 right now? I don't know, since I don't want to run a beta OS.

Fair enough - but I occasionally do encounter Graphical instability in W10 TP. GPU Driver crashes, instability and glitches in-game, etc. It's very minor, though, and not a huge problem.

All in all though, I'm surprised as to how well W10 runs, considering it is a Beta product.

Since MS moved onto the NT 6 core with Vista, things have moved more smoothly. 7 was core 6.1 (6+1 =7), 8 was 6.2, and 8.1 /which is actually a separate windows version, is core 6.3 (aka windows 9). SO Windows 10 is NT core 6.4, so really you see MS just building on top of existing versions. Adding and editing on newer iterations. I think we will see new versions be a lot easier to use, unlike old days with Vista, XP, etc (yeah XP was a LOT worse than Vista at launch).

AMD decided to scrap windows 8 drivers, since 8.1 became a free upgrade. I wonder if they are going to do the same with 7 and 8.1, when 10 comes along. Would make sense, as 10 is superior, and a free upgrade, like 8->8.1.
