Again, as other have said the 3930K is overkill; games are designed for the masses and since the masses will never have a CPU the likes of the 3930K, games will never take full advantage of the technology it has to offer. You'd be better off getting a 4670K or 4770K, with a reasonable priced motherboard and using the extra money for more or better components. But if your sights are set on a 3930K and a ridiculously overkill motherboard, get what you like.

its a gaming mobo

why is their cpus not for gaming and their mobos is for gaming?

The Extreme Edition CPU's are a waste of money, for almost half the cost you can get a 3930K and it is pretty much equal to the 3970X in performance

ViruZ_HUN <==  Dude, looks like you have a lot of money, but the people here in this forum have EXPERIENCE. So please listen to these guys and make the right choice. We are only here to help each other.

And after buying whatever you like (extreme extreme whatever build) don't cry if you notice someone else beside you running a reasonable build having higher FPS in games than your EXTREME build.

People aren't going to have higher FPS than him with a cheaper build, unless they get more 780's.

And why is everyone saying the i5 4670K is better than a 3930K for gaming, sure it's better price/performance, but the 3930K will beat it in practically everything as the video M-ursu linked which Linus even says the 3930K has a conservative overclock. Along those lines no-one would notice a 5FPS difference when it's running at 80+FPS already.

Also ViruZ_HUN if you want to get a better price/performance system, which will perform 10% better than the 3930K system, buy the 4770K, otherwise get what you want.

To the peeps telling the OP that an 'X' CPU is a waste, it is only if gaming is the prime purpose. But if you do video encoding and such, the 'X' CPUs can flex its muscles using its extra cores......especially when the program used allows for the extra cores/threads to be used.

I was putting together the rig in my sig back in December 2011, had the rig built more or less by Jan 2012. Back then, I had asked about what platform to build my rig on......back then, I think the Z68 + i7 2600K/2700K was the top dog for mainstream builds. Sure, I'd weighed the advice given and in the end, went with an LGA2011 build because I wanted a system that could last a few years.

For the OP, if purely focused on gaming, a Z87 + 4570K/4770K combo would more than suffice. If you intend to use it for CPU intensive programs that use the extra cores/threads, then the 3930K is wotth considering.

The X CPU's are a waste, I sent a message to Linus about 2 months ago or something asking the difference between 3930K and 3970X because of the huge price difference, he said that the performance was pretty much the same (few extra MHz and a little more cache) and you are basically paying for the name.

But for gaming the Core i5 will be more than sufficient, love to have a Core i5 but I'm kind of stuck with my Core i3 at the moment.

Is this a shot at me? If so, well, back when I was putting my rig together, I'd originally wanted a 3930K myself, but they were virtually non-existent....only stocks of the 3960X were available then, But, since having an entire build just about ready I wasn't about to wait for stock of the 3930K to arrive. So, I opted for the 3960X.....I would have been just as happy with a 3930K, but I wasn't willing to wait back then. Also, I tend to buy the highest end CPU and use it for as long as I can. Like the C2Q X9650 in my 3rd rig, I've been using it for years, it's still a capable gaming CPU....

The usual gaming, plus video re-encoding.......I use this, as well as my 2nd rig which has an FX8350 @4.5ghz for more or less the same thing. Awesome to see all the cores/threads working when re-encoding. For gaming, neither CPU, as well as the X9650 @3.7ghz, have let me down....great framerate (with their respective GPUs) and smooth gameplay. Granted, even though the FX8350 @4.5ghz isn't as fast as the 3960X at stock (let alone 4.5ghz) framerate is still more than playable.

For gaming 4770k is faster than 3930k

True but if you get a bad 4770k, which is highly probable, it won't overclock as good.

future proofing makes no sense! by the time a 4670k is to slow a 3930k will be to slow too. if you don't need the extra power go for the 4670k and buy a 6670k in 2-3years with a new board.

do you want to miss out on sata4/ddr4/pcie4 and what not? So you can use your old board longer? Buying a cheap z87 board+ 4670K and next year a Z97board+ 5670k is still cheaper/faster/more power efficent than a 3930k+Asus ROG board.

But nobody said that it was for gaming.

those CPUs socket is 2011.

if those CPUs it not for gamign why do it have gaming mobos then?? like Rampage iv formula?

its a gaming mobo

why is their cpus not for gaming and their mobos is for gaming?

The 3930x and 3970x are for server setups and video editing but you can game on it too and that is why there are gaming motherboards for them. If there were not any gaming or consumer motherboards then the CPUs would not sell as much as they do with consumer/gaming motherboards. If you must get a system now and your budget can meet what yu want then go for it. However, if i were you i would put my money away and keep adding to it for later this year for Ivy-Bridge E which is supposed to come out in September, which is only a few months away. I am sure there will be newer motherboards as well.

What people are not telling you is that with the 4670k and the 4770k, it is a high probability that you will get a CPU that cannot overclock good. I have heard JJ of ASUS say that your chance of getting a good overclocking CPU in the at present Haswell CPUs is very slim. Even linus has said he got his Haswell CPUs from JJ. JJ had like 60 CPUs. If you check any overclocking forums you will see how hard it is to get past 4.4Ghz on a Haswell without any phase change cooling solution or LN2.  Regarding the motherboards of Haswell, they are feature rich compared to other motherboards of the past but that should not compel you to buy it. You need to look at the overall performance of your system.

Now if you are satisfied with your system you have right now, like me, in 2014 there is suppose to have DDr4 and PCI-Ex16 4.0 coming out and i am sure there will be even better motherboards, GPUs, cases, peripherals etc.... and do your research and choose what ever best suits you. If you want to buy now go ahead, if you can wait, wait and stop letting people confuse you.

A water-cooled mid-tier gaming PC.
