I would like to suggest 2 upcoming builds

 

the first build will be a 1440P IPS monitor with PremierColour for photo editing and then also for 1440P 60Hz gaming

 

This build will be suited for both serious photo editing buffs and than the gamer side where the guy could play AAA titles with the same system at Ultra 1440P details at constant 60Hz

 

The second build will be a bigger challenge as I was thinking of a system that can support three ROG Swift 120+Hz respond time monitors

 

This build will be suited for simulation based games or racing games like Grid 2 or Dirt 3 or F1 2013/14 where gamers will like the idea of 180 degree view

 

but note that three 1440P monitors is much harder to drive than one 4K monitor since the total pixels counts is 11M+ pixels vs 8.2M+ pixels for one 4K monitor and also to drive up to 120Hz or 144Hz framerate, so GPU power and VRAM is important and now that Titan Z and R9 295X2 are in the market we could see ppl choice of GPU and they will need to justify the selection and cost and almost forget when driving 4 GPUs you will need to include a beefy PSU like the recent 1500W PSU from Corsair

 

The requirement only needs the desktop since the monitor is not available only until Dec

 

both system budget is up to you but will be nice to set at least 5-6K for the second build since Titan Z is 3-4K alone.

Thank you for the suggestions. I'm planning on merging your second idea with GRRigger's "Gaming Heaven" proposal since it would be silly to have to build-offs with huge budgets back-to-back. The photo editing/gaming rig sounds like an interesting challenge

I have an idea for a build theme. The main premise would be to start with a low/moderate budget (say $500-600 USD) and the challenge would be to build a system that would allow for the most/best possible upgrade path to a killer gaming rig down the road - but the catch is to achieve that upgrade having to replace as few parts as possible. Those making submissions would have to (briefly) explain the upgrade path of their build and the rational behind their choice of components. Basically; a build for someone who wants to start gaming and doesn't have a ton of cash upfront, but eventually wants to turn it into a beast machine later on.

 

I think this would make for an interesting challenge as the idea is not to make the best performing machine within the initial provided budget. 

 

No display, OS, or peripherals - just the main core system (CPU, Mobo, Ram, storage, GPU, PSU and case/chassis).

There are actually many ways one could go about making such a build for both AMD and Intel. Would be interesting to see what everyone comes up with.
