GTA V - very low fps outside of city on Gtx 980.

sew999

My 970 runs 60+ frames inside the city and outside the city. I've never had it go below 60 during gameplay. Even out in the forest blowing up cars with my buddy I got it to drop to 62fps I think.

I'm running 1080 with 2x msaa (and txaa) with everything on very high. All of my aa options are at 2x (water and such). All advanced options off. There really isn't a noticeable difference inside and outside the city for me.

IF you enter to forests ( near tress ) your fps will dramatically goes down. Try it. I am using Gtx 980 and when i near tress i have 43 fps with all options maxed except advanced shadows resolution which is off. Sliders to medium. Rest options maxed, Msaa 2x, Txaa , grass V.HIGH

My fps really go down if i am outside city , only in forests ( vegetation or near tress ) .I am getting there 43-46 fps. I even change GRASS from ULTRA to V.HIGH , I disabled Advanced resolution shadows, and sliders are in medium on advanced options. Other options are maxed , MSAA 2x, TXAA. Is this normal? Why vegetation is really demanding even without GRASS maxed out and disabled advanced resolution shadows. I have Gtx 980 , I7 4790k.

Can somebody check fps on our Gtx 980 near tress or vegetation? ( without advanced shadows off ) But AA on.

I'm sorry but no. I'm calling bullshit, you have a 970, grass on high and you stay just over 60 constant...nope.

Yup. I swear to you. All settings on very high that can go it (none on ultra). 2xmsaa (txaa too) and 2xaa on shadows/water and all that. Nvidia grass and all slides maxed. No advanced graphics on. I haven't dropped below 60 except for on my heist last night where a chopped landed and exploded in my face. Outside the city I hover around 65-70 and in the city I'm holding 75+. In the Forrest by the creek dirtbiking past trees and grass I don't ever dip below 60.

I've been tinkering with my settings to find the perfect balance. So you have all settings on very high, depth of field on, 2x txaa no advanced graphics...what resolution are you at, 1080?

Oh I'm sorry. I never run depth of field or motion blur. Never liked how those look.

Other than those. Yeah. 1080 with any AA option At 2x. No advanced graphics. Everything is the highest it will go EXCEPT ultra.

I can honestly say I'm amazed. I tried your settings and agree, I too hate depth of field but yeah. I seem to be getting a good frame rate.

On launch night I weren't getting these results hence why I was tinkering with the settings...what's changed?

Alright, you guys are having problems with low dips fps on a 1080p and have turn settings off/lower, tell me, do i need 2 980s to be at 60+ @ 1440p on maxed out?

Grass has nothing to do with GPU.  It's all CPU-bound objects that are causing FPS slowdowns outside cities and in forests.

everything on advanced should be turned off, even on a 980.

also ambient occlusion off, Nvidia shadows are pretty demanding! try soft shadows

Ive been thinkering with settings the past 2 days and have a few "presets"

1080p: everything very high, soft shadows, fxaa and 2x msaa, txaa on, no ambient and no tesselation, no advanced settings

1440p: textures very high, rest high, soft shadows, no AA ambient and tesselation, no advanced settings

Turn off msaa. MSAA and Very High Grass do not go well together. Or turn down grass to high.

What if i use Advanced graphics all at max and all other graphics on max (just msaa x2, txaa on and fxaa off, nvidia shadows) on just 1 980. Can it do 40fps @ 1440p?

Probably.  But Advanced Distance Scaling is a HUGE CPU-hog.

Are you trying to say that a 6 core/12 threads CPU overclocked is not enough?

It isn't.  TotalBiscuit has a beast of a rig and he has to turn down Advanced.

I saw his review. But his cpu cores were not at 100% usage. I will surely unpark all cores and OC it. If it is a burden to the cpu, it means that it is at 100% load and in this case is a "bottleneck" to the graphics card(s).

Games will barely ever use more than 4 threads.  The threads it does use however will be always near max.

So it's not well optimised afterall... Ahh well that's what we get with DX11... If this game was on DX12 then it would use better thread allocation... Well i should just try and see whatever best works for me. 40fps isn't that bad afterall is it?

I think you mistake "multi-threaded" with "pc optimisation".

Nope, "well-optimized" for me would mean that the application uses the resources given fully to get the compute power required to work at optimal...but yeah that includes the fact that it must have the option to use multiple threads if available, which unfortunately not many games do. Most of the time the thread 0 will be used at 100%. Work should be divided throughout all threads. At least that is what DX12 promises:

In this situation, advanced graphics will not be such a cpu hog.
