How in the world does an $1100 laptop not come with Windows?  No offense to Linux users but how/why is Ubuntu even an option for a Dell?  You'd think they'd have some deal with MS saying only Windows. lol

Though what I find the most irritating thing about this is why she didn't just go buy Windows.  Sure it'd add a bit to the overall total for the laptop along with buying MS Office but it would've been a lot simpler than calling a news channel who clearly were as clueless as she is.

Dell has a series of laptops that come pre-loaded with Ubuntu rather than windows. They're targeted to a more professional crowd iirc. They're also more expensive.

Ubuntu is not bad once you realise that Microsoft programs don't run on it, it is like trying to put diesel into a gas engine.

Open Office will literally do anything microsoft office can do. The only real issue was verizon not having linux support.

I think for many people part of the problem would be not being able to save in MS word formats.  Many schools I'd assume would require any digital submissions to be in MS word format.  It's just assumed that people have access to Windows and MS office the same way it's assumed that owning a computer is universal.  In many cases the latter is true but not everyone uses Windows.

The thing is you can save as ".doc" or ".docx" in open office.

Well open office also runs on windows as well, good alternative to microsoft office suite as it has a form of powerpoint, and  excel, and more as well.

Good news then! Libre Office is on Linux.

Honestly, Ubuntu is a fantastic OS. It takes a little more knowledge if you aren't used to it, but you really learn a lot more about how the computer works when you use it than you normally would from either Windows or OSX.

*sigh* I wish the Wifi at my university supported Linux. If they did, I would definitely run it, but the university doesn't support it, and I'm far too lazy to figure out how to get it to work myself.

Play around with Ubuntu. Watch some tutorials on how to change some stuff and customize things.

lol there are too many replies regarding that report on the Dell with Ubuntu ...

Aside from the news channel obviously not really knowing much about computers, the person mainly responsible for this fiasco is really the student, it's obvious she had NO idea about anything related to her purchase, who goes out and spend money on something without researching first? Honestly, I don't get this type of mentality!

I'm sure some of you had family and friends ask you about a PC purchase and then they don't follow up on those advice and end up complaining about the purchase. It's SO annoying, I completely understand if someone doesn't understand anything about computers, but to ignore advice, not do any research and then complain about it? SERIOUSLY?

I just remembered something me and my dad did a few months ago. Here's what happened: My uncle's laptop didn't want to boot and got stuck at Sarting Windows and he gave it for repair. After 3 weeks he got it back in the same condition so he asked if me and my dad can have a look at it. He gaves us the laptop and the next day we fixed it for like 20 minutes (one of the RAM sticks was faulty). We had spare time and we noticed the WiFi didn't work. We opened the laptop and tried unplugging and plugging back in the WiFi antenna - nothing. Then we reinstalled Windows and nothing. We even tried a different WiFi card. After all this we accidentally found out that the Wifi switch was set to Off, we set it to On and guess what happened - the WiFi started working. So we wasted a few hours trying to fix something that wasn't broken in the first place.

No I wasn't mocking you.  It really is nice to see different races/cultures/etc. all getting along with each other.  Thought personally I'd love to learn Japanese or Italian instead of Spanish.  ?

(Not that there's anything wrong with Spanish of course.)
