Experiences with non-techies

Mom: Hey, Coop, can you take a look at my computer for me?

Me: Sure, what's the problem?

Mom: It's slow.

Me: .....Okay, when is it slow, and do you think you know what caused it?

Mom: I don't know, it's just slow...

Me: :[

Come to find that the reason her computer is slow is because she has about 500 files sitting on her desktop, and every time she downloads something she feels the urge to click the link 7 times... as a result downloading files 6 or 7 times over.....facepalm....

My mother is guilty of this. She double clicks everything, including download links.

Personally, I feel like double clicking stuff isn't too bad. I need to double-click on my programs especially with the games that are on my desktop.

One day I will have my GTX 970. One day. PC specs are at my profile.

Not sure how to check what part works with what? Check out my compatibility guide!

I just right-click and click Open or use my keyboard to highlight it and hit Enter.

I remember the librarian at my elementary school used to believe that double clicking was the solution to everything. The book search program would crash for like the eighteenth time in one sitting and I'd ask her what was wrong and her response would be, "Did you double-click?".

Well if the screen wasn't cracked, and if the phone was PERFECTLY FINE, just shove it back to him and tell him that you LITERALLY CANNOT FIX SOMETHING THAT IS NOT BROKEN.

He should've said:

"You need to replace the owner of the phone."

How was having files on the desktop making it slow?

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

I work with non techy people and they use equipment vital to their job, that has a tendency to to have issues since they are used 24/7 and by multiple people a day. they'll call saying its giving them an error, and when i ask what error they normally say: "Iunno."

... i need to know this error, so i can fix it. c'mon people lol

I asked one of my friends what pc parts he had and he answered

"Intel and Nvidia"

and left me hanging.

And when my other tech-savvy friend (who actually knew something.) told us he built a new 1000$$ computer

my other friend went like: "16 GBS OF RAM... WOW!" meanwhile I facepalmed when nobody cared for his GTX 970

PC SPECS :

cpu: intel i3-6100 @ 3.70 Ghz (stock) gpu: Sapphire Nitro OC R9 380 4GB motherboard: Gigabyte H110M-DS2-CF

Case: NZXT S340 (glossy black) Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws DDR4 @ 2133 Mhz Storage: WD 1TB hard drive PSU: Seasonic S12II 520W

How was having files on the desktop making it slow?

She has an OLD hp laptop. Dates back to 2006. I'm not entirely sure why it was slowing it down, but me organizing her desktop and deleting extra copies of files seemed to help. So I'm diagnosing that as the problem. :P

20,000 pounds? Fuck, could've probably bought a car with that much money! It'd be safer to buy one from Digital Storm or a prebuilt manufacturer

How does that work?

There's a reason RAM is super low latency, 10+ Gbytes/sec and HDDs are the exact opposite.

Without being one of those stupid four monitor builds 12 year olds seem fond of on PCpartpicker how could you possibly get to £20,000 for a system (and to pay that much for it second hand is mind  boggling).

Personally I lost faith in humanity decades ago when I was working retail ... that's when I learned something not many of us are aware of;

regular Joe/Jane is dumb AF... seriously, common sense is way less common than you might think!

When I was talking about common sense, that's what I had in mind;

OK so I found some new ones, but then forgot most of them.  I still have this though :D

I saw this link in a webpage.  Notice they've taken the common idea of re purposing the enter key for emphasis with regard to something they are talking about.  Except, they didn't - they used the shift key... and changed it to "delete".  *faceplam* there is ALREADY A DELETE KEY!!!

I am well aware of that. I was wondering why having lots of icons on the desktop would affect performance so much.

Remove the duplicates, run CC cleaner to clean up temp files, and then defragment the HDD, remove unwanted programs/bloatware, and programs from the bootlist (is that what it's called?) that aren't used frequently
