Experiences with non-techies

A miner and I were talking about home networking yesterday. He comes around the corner in time to see the layout on the computer that I'm thinking of and hears me tell the miner that it's the long range AP, so it's good for 180 meters.

Turns into a 20 minute conversation of why that wont work for him instead of his router.

Follow up to this. He now understands that he can't run a POE access point without a bunch of other equipment. He also understands that (the simplest way to explain it all), not all ethernet carries power, but power can carry ethernet. He's getting powerline adapters with WiFi boosters.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

Whenever I talk about Tech and OSes in particular people will be like: Please speak German with me and stop using English Words !?!

Like, Windows in German would be "Fenstern".

Not a native speaker of German here, but I think if someone used the phrase "Fenstern installieren" I'd assume that they were discussing some physical windows being put in, on their house or something? I've never actually seen in translated in the context of the OS.

Thanks for reading all this by the way!

By the way, my desktop is a docked laptop. Get over it, No seriously, I have an exterrnal monitor, keyboard, mouse, headset, ethernet and cooling fans all connected. Using it feels no different to a desktop, it works for several hours if the power goes out, and disconnecting just a few cables gives me something I can take on the go. There's enough power for all games I play and it even copes with basic (and some not-so-basic) video editing. Give it a go - you might just love it.

This is generally how proprietary names are used across languages as far as I know. In French, "Facebook" would literally translate to "livre des visages", probably, but nobody calls it that. You carry over the proprietary names from the original language as a loanword. Even in different languages of Chinese, as far as I know everyone would just use the word "Windows" in a conversation that's otherwise entirely in Mandarin/Cantonese/etc.

It's entirely possible that I misinterpreted/misread your topic and/or question. This happens more often than I care to admit. Apologies in advance.

Yes, because you're referring to a branded 'thing' not the physical parts making up the thing. Germans are great for cobbling together a string of old words to describe a new thing when they need to, but when the thing has a branded name already just use the branded name!

didn't french try to abolish the word e-mail?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

Yes, they did. The official word is "courriel" because the French language academy is super prescriptivist. They also ban soccer/football commentators from using shorthand to describe terms in the game. I think every time a corner is issued, commentators have to use the full term "coup de pied de coin". As far as I know, though, people just use the terms anyway because none of it matters unless you're using it in an official context.

That's also consistent with what I have seen. There are other "official" French tech terms like "informatique en nuages" (cloud computing) and "mot dièse" (hashtag) which have been invented, but I have never ever heard any French person using them (and it is hard for me to imagine that anyone would use them, because they just sound silly imho).

Not sure if this classifies as non techie, but Jesus that's a lot of tabs.

Looks normal, what's the problem? Now if you say have 3 windows open each with that many tabs and two different browsers running...then you might be me.

Oh don't worry, they also showed another window that had 5 or 6 more tabs... Guess it's just unusual for me because I have 10 tabs open at a time tops, usually 4 or fewer.

It's stupid that Chrome crams all the tabs together like that. Seems to me it would make more sense to define a minimum sensible width that they will shrink to and then either break them onto a new line or have some way of horizontally scrolling through them, that way you could actually read them.

Frankly I though if you keep that many tabs open on a regular basis it's just lazy.

not if you have a chromebook, they are so slow at loading new tabs, you might as well keep them open

On my girlfriend's phone, I regularly see the infinity symbol where the number of firefox tabs goes, so she has more than 99 open tabs at a time.I guess the tabs' contents are not active in the RAM at the same time, otherwise those 3GB could easily be full.

Every language has a formal and informal register of both writing and speech. French is no different, but it just seems more unique just because of how aggressive l'Académie française happens to be when it comes to "preserving" or "defending" the French language from "evil" loanwords and Anglicisms.

This reminded me of something. This is from Facebook trying to join a group call using Firefox. They translated only Windows.... Out of all the words used here, they translated the one that should not be translated, at least it's funny. In Bulgarian "windows" is translated as "прозорци", the word, not the OS of course.

This review on a $1200 HDMI cable. It looks troll-ish but also sadly legitimate.

Great cable for the money!

Posted 7 years ago.

I bought this cable to hook up my recently purchased a Dynex 19 inch color LCD 720p HDTV (WIDESCREEN!). My TV/VCR combo had served me well for many years and I felt it was time for an upgrade. I was disappointed that my new TV did not have VCR playback capabilities, but I was able to retain the ability to play VHS tapes by incorporating the old TV/VCR combo into my setup as a stand for the new Dynex! I researched HDMI cables for several weeks, reading reviews and watching unboxing videos. My friends recommended that I just buy an inexpensive cable and started spewing techno-babble at me about how HDMI cables work. They claimed that it's not possible for a higher priced HDMI cable to improve picture quality because of how digital video signals work. Something about 1s and 0s and error correction. I was skeptical. I mean my friends are very smart, but they aren't Best Buy employee smart. So I went to my local Best Buy to speak to the experts that I trust. A while back, my computer would not boot into Windows ME and instead displayed the message: "Boot Device Not Found." I thought perhaps the hard drive had become disconnected. Well, I'm glad I took it to the Geek Squad. The technician saw the error msg and was able to determine that I needed a new hard drive without even opening it up or running any kind of diagnostic software. What technical expertise! But let me get back to the cable. I told one of the customer service agents about the my home theater setup and my intentions to hook up my gaming console to my new 19 inch color LCD 720p HDTV (WIDESCREEN!). He recommended this cable for its inherent ability to increase the resolution and frames per second in games. So I bought it and brought it home. I went to the living room to hook up my console and I hit my first snag. Nowhere in the documentation did it specify where to hook the cable up to the NES. I was about to give up but I noticed a cover on the bottom of the Nintendo. It turns out that this is where the expansion port is located which is where you connect the HDMI cable. I hooked the other end up to the TV and fired up the NES. Unfortunately, I didn't get a video signal. After much experimentation I figured it out. To get HD output from an NES you have to hook up the analog outputs as well. Apparently the TV combines these two signals to form an image. And what an image! The blacks were so deep that it desaturated all the color from my living room furniture! I had been meaning to apply a darker stain to my coffee table and now I don't have to! My couches were now black, giving my living room a much needed neutral color scheme. Super Mario Bros looked amazing! I hit the info button on my remote and discovered that it was running in 4k 480Hz with a perfectly matched frame rate of 480 frames per second! I wanted to capture some game footage so I hooked the NES up to the VCR. I've never seen such clarity in a VHS recording! It makes Blu-Ray look like an Etch A Sketch! I now realize why my friends were trying to dissuade me from buying a mid priced cable like this one. They probably purchased some cheap $500 dollar cable and didn't want me to get an HDMI cable with over twice the performance of their cable. I no longer speak to them as I don't need people like that in my life. All my friends now reside in the Mushroom Kingdom. One other thing to note is the the Zapper didn't work with the new TV. This is most likely because the Zapper could not detect if it was hitting a target due to the increased resolution and frame rate. While the documentation leaves room for improvement as hooking up an NES wasn't even mentioned, at this price point I can't justify taking away a star. FIVE STAR PRODUCT!!! If I had any friends left, I would definitely recommend them this product!

When I fix something for someone they usually blame me for any future problem but only after uninstalling the anti-virus software. I am now beholden forever to fixing that shitty laptop.

And that my friends is why I quit working on friends computers. I was blamed for a friend formatting his OS drive, it was my fault for not telling him not to.

I just remembered a repressed memory from around 5 years ago, before I knew a lot about computers. My teacher sent me to go copy a worksheet for class because I was the only one not acting like a crackhead and she had stuff she needed to do. So I go to the copier and plop it right in the middle of the glass, not knowing you had to align the paper with the sides, and come back with ~50 copies of the top 3/4 of the sheet.

Needless to say I have never been sent to copy things since.

My friends that think my pc is hella slow bc it takes ~2 minutes to boot.

(not to flex, but for reference) I've got a 16 core hyperthreaded CPU and a Quadro m5000, and I boot from an SSD. And I only have like 4 programs that run on startup (Bing Wallpaper, Discord, and drivers for my sound and USB cards). For some reason it just takes a very long time to boot into Windows because the POST takes a while.

My system takes about 2 minutes to boot as well.

1 minute for BIOS (BIOS screen, PCIe card BIOS screen, BIOS screen), 1 minute for Windows (45 seconds for Windows logo, 10 seconds for the spinning circle of doom, 5 seconds for the login screen to appear).

I have a LOT of programs.

Quite same. I have, let's see, around 60 on the system - 6 Unity SDKs, 7 versions of Visual Studio, 4 different things for Cinema 4D, and 3 Unigine SDKs, and some other miscellaneous programs. oof.

It's always scary when the windows logo disappears and it's just a black screen for a few seconds, but the blank screen seems to last longer than usual and you see your life flash before your eyes.

After the Windows logo disappears on bootup, I get a blank screen with just the loading dots.

I got this before, and it required a Windows reinstall (GPU drivers got corrupted)

This goes for 10 seconds, then screen goes black for 3 seconds, then Windows appears and I get the Magic School Bus theme.

I tried to change my startup sound to the bruh sound effect but for some reason it just plays the normal one...
