Experiences with non-techies

Thought it would be fun to make a topic about, all of our experiences with all the people, who doesn't really understand all the tech.

Note: Don't make this too harsh on them. You need to help them, not yell at them.

I'll go first:

So my mom has a daycare. And one day I am sitting on the floor with my laptop. And one of the kids, with real dirty hands come and put his hand on the screen. Guess he thought it was a touch screen. Still haven't gotten it off, and it was 3 months ago.

My grandmother is scared of getting rid of the computer, because she thinks it will cut the power to her house.

What is the biggest lie in the entire universe?

"I have read and agreed to the Terms & Conditions."

How do computers get drunk?

They take to many screenshots.

My parents and I were at a local car dealership yesterday after my mom's car was involved in a car accident (was my dad and I, everyone was ok, only about a mile away from our house), where insurance deemed it a total loss. The car we were looking at was a "Certified Pre-Owned" where it went through a 173 point inspection. The cabin air filter has an airflow indicator that has to point down for proper airflow and as also noted in the owner's manual. I asked the used car manager what they did and they did replace that filter, but with the airflow indicator pointing upwards. You'd expect the car dealership that sells the same make and model of cars to have knowledge on what they are repairing/selling.

Do your own research and investigate as always, as car dealerships are car "steal"erships.

I started with that as well. But after a few years, anyone in need of a new pc would come to me first. Now I've got a small collection of around 11 PCs that I've brought to life, resting at their houses. It's one of the reasons I started referring people interested in custom PCs to LTT & TQ channels, so they can learn themselves*.

Good Gods they destroyed a bunch of working Computers? How old were they? As long as they are not too old and depending on Specs, those Systems would be still useful to a number of Folks.

Why would you want to destroy the data anyway? Company files that you don't want leaked?

Those were Core2Quads and 1st gen i3's, nothing extraordinary, we pulled the CPUs and RAM in case we needed it, we have a PC recycling company that usually will resell those business pre-builds for cheap, but not those obviously.

Corporate computers, all the corp PC we get rid of get the drives pulled of and they get sent to a company that destroy the drives and supply a certificate. Regular office computers shouldn't have any compromising information, but you never know, some of our clients are in finance, insurance, etc... you don't want to take any chances, especially with laws regulating personal information around financing / insurance / medical.

That sounds about right. Still, I'm surprised they've never known where the data is stored, especially for a company that has a lot of sensitive information in hard drives. Kind of worrying...

That's what happens when smaller companies (less than 50 employees) go from internal IT to a MSP, the IT director was the accountant, and the people that did that were just regular employees told to make sure the PCs were disposed of correctly.

Well even if they know where all of their Data is stored like everything is on Servers and not on Local Storage, I expected Companies to remove the HDDs anyway. Before replacing that is.

I'm not sure about this, but aren't SSDs much harder to recover deleted data off of?

So the Employees just took the PCs home with them then? Of course considering that a lot of Companies do keep Computers in use long after they should have been replace, I'm not sure I would bother doing that...

No just the guy who mention a mentioned a  small company who told regular employees to wipe Data off of Old PCs and dispose of them. Those Employees are the ones I'm referring to.

So it's not an experience with a non-techie, but... worth telling? Also, what the everloving f**k...

The company I work for, let's call them "KillMinds", has many locations around the world.
In a certain location, the factory contracted some work to be done in the server/UPS room - some sound proofing, bit of painting, stuff like that.

Due to several factors, the work had to be done on a weekend, but the local IT guy there didn't want to go to the factory on a weeked. So what did he decide to do?

Before leaving, Friday afternoon, he left the door open. To the server room.

Now we have an opening in the IT department to fill that position, and a reported crime with local police for networking and server gear worth several dozens of thousands of Euros.

😄
