Experiences with non-techies

Luckily I've never had an update cause me grief.

I've personally had an update I could never go thru recently. Update required a restart and if I didn't update my version of Windows would lose support within 2 months. Obviously I try the update and after the restart it was stuck on a black screen. I had to shut down and turn it back on to save it, took like 5 minutes to boot then finally worked again, however lost the update. I'd rather lose support than lose my device in general at this point.
Note: Happened a month ago.

my terrible laptop: CPU: i5-2450M at 2.60 ghz base (however goes up to 3.30 ghz on any steam game i run. odd.) GPU: integrated Quadro NVS 4200m (garbage. the reason that this is terrible.) 6GB of ram, 300GB HDD. refurbished Dell Latitude Esomething. got it for like 140 bucks on amazon.

Only convenient when it works. Seems like MS is going a piss poor job on updates and breaking shit every 10 seconds. I gave up on Windows and moved to Linux. Sure, I cant play most of my Steam games, but I rather have a system that works then one that is flat out broken most of the time.

As someone switched from Windows to Linux, the real difference is that in Windows updates break your system and in Linux you break your system.

I've had more issues with Macs lately than Windows machines. Considering the fact that I'm the systems admin for a network with over 1000 Windows machines on it and I only have 50 Macs, that's saying something. For the computers that "just work" they sure as hell don't.

And then me ;

* opens RDP session to a server, to start a major software update *

* minimize the RDP session *

* opens Chrome and enters VMware server's IP *

* spends 15 minutes trying to figure out why the VMware server can't be reached *

* realize I minimized the RDP session *

...

* goes back into the RDP session *

* opens Chrome and enters VMware server's IP *

* swears at myself and continues with software update *

Translation ;

the VMware server isn't accepting connections from anywhere, it has to be from within the network, from one specific server ... I'm tired I guess, 'cause I logged into that server then tried to log into the VMware server from my work PC! *facepalm*

You can take a look at all of the Tech that I own and have owned over the years in my About Me section and on my Profile.

I'm Swiss and my Mother language is Swiss German of course, I speak the Aargauer dialect. If you want to watch a great video about Swiss German which explains the language and outlines the Basics, then click here.

If I could just play Videogames and consume Cool Content all day long for the rest of my life, then that would be sick.

So in my Computer Graphics class (we learn how to use photoshop, illustrator, etc) there were a few upperclassmen in the back of the room trying to build a "Gaming" pc (i3, no GPU). I was kind of watching them out of the corner of my eye for a while, and it looked as if the only instructions they were given were "all of these pieces go into this big box". They didn't use any of the motherboard standoffs, they forgot thermal paste and figured "it'll be fine", and they somehow (dont ask me how) got the cpu in BACKWARDS. SERIOUSLY. Like, rotated 180 degrees. With the retainer down and everything. HOW DO YOU EVEN DO THAT??

I swear I can never unsee that you guys. It was truly disturbing...

Do you know how a Cornbook cart works? You basically plug in something like 36 Cornbooks and let them charge. There are dividers separating the Cornbooks in our carts.

So this dumbass at our school keeps putting the Cornbooks in so the divider section is between the keyboard and screen and I've reported two Cornbooks with cracked screens to the improving school IT department for the 1.5 years I've been at this high school.

this is why my elementary school got rid of cornbok carts except for the IT people to store borked ones

I do care calls for a major telecom company and got blind transferred a customer having an issue with her Apple watch.

For some perspective, my department mainly handles billing issues. This woman spoke with both Apple tech as well as tech from Asurion -- insurance company whose tech costs a premium being 24/7.

The device was connected by Bluetooth -- no cellular line which means it wasn't even on the account to troubleshoot. ?
