Experiences with non-techies

When your on the phone talking to them, probably not that long, but it sure felt like it.

Meh, everyone starts out as a newbie, so you'll have to be patient and give them time.

me: Click Start

them: What is start

m: the button the bottom left corner

t: I don't see it

m: what you mean you don't see it

t: There is no start button

m: What windows OS are you using

t: Windows

m: which windows?

t: I don't know

m: If the Start button on the bottom left is green, then you're running XP, Is your button green?

t: No

m: Okay, so you are not running XP, must be one of the newer OSes then, click on the start orb

t: Where is the start orb?

m: The button on the bottom left corner, the one that looks like a ball with the windows logo

m: Do you see it?

t: Yes

m:  Now click on it

t: OK I did

m: Good now moving on...

Oh wow... Dealing with people's tech problems on a phone seems like pain in the ass... I'd much rather go on-site and show how it's done; I can't explain jack sh*t with just words.

Never trust my advice. Only take any and all advice from me with a grain of salt. Just a heads up.

Once, I reinstalled my grandfather's windows, dusted his computer, organized all his files and folders, organized his bookmarks, organized his whole office, fixed the cables for everything to be all nice and neat running in straight lines along the back of his desk... He thanks me profusely. I come back 2 days later, everything is back the way it was. I asked myself how this was possible...

When my mum was still with us I would get phone calls like that but she used to get angtsy so was clicking away (you could hear it) while asking you what to do and of course with her clicking away the screen was not showing what you thought it was .  Several times I had to get quite pissy over the 'phone, "mum don't touch anything till I say"  "MUM STOP CLICKING ?"

Or you know, playing a really intense game like battlefield 4 without a mouse/keyboard on low settings and meh frame rates or installing a mobile GPU and dealing with insane temps....you know, PCs are so useless nowadays....

I think she's not entireley wrong as there will still be old curmudgeons like us that want OUR DESKTOP POWERRRRR FACK YOU ALL and whatnot but I feel like several people will ditch laptops and desktops as they can just use that box in their pocket.

At least I got a easy one, my partner once had to deal with a person who can't read the English alphabet.

I can't remember how the it went, but it went something like this. Also they're speaking in their native language not English

My partner: OK in the username bar, type in your name.

that person: How?

MP: What is your name:

TP: Gary* (not that person's real name)

MP: On your keyboard press G A R Y

TP:  Which key is the letter G?

MP: The G key, just press it

TP: I don't know what is the G key, can you tell me how it looks like

I see one that has a long horizontal bar and a vertical bar down the middle. There is another that has a long vertical bar with a small hook going towards the left.

A vertical bar, with a 2 horizontal bars attached with a small curve and another small bar at a angle.

MP: *double facepalm*

-In school, we have these intel atom based PC's, they are built into the white-board(With projector) and the teacher cant seem too start them, because for some reason the have a "Power to HDD" button which is needed to be pushed when the pc needs to start.

-When we watch a movie and there is no sound the speakers need a re-plug, and the imbecile of teachers we have cant figure it out...

oh and... one of my friends bought a prebuild "perfect mid rangegaming pc" (amd 5350 + gt 640) and people were hating on him for going prebuild and the noob told us to "excuse him for buying what he finds reliable" i laughed my ass off like never before.... i have an entire book of messages with him on fb about this and i can copy paste them here so that you can blow up laughing. oh and ill say his youtube name is iamthemostwanted2011 so you can watch the videos about his 'glorious' pc. And please watch the video where he opens up outdated hardware (athlon 64 generic unbranded gpu and 2 mobos) that he got from his 'friend'. the title of it is "an awesome friend donated me an ipod touch and some pc parts :D". And at the end he says that his dad is getting them checked LooooL. Now honestly, that's very sad, its just cringy, that's...... painful to watch... it marked me for at least 2 months and not in a good way, its the sadest Yt video I ever watched...... he might find this post out if he googles his name but i dont caaaareeeeeeee.

My Mom resets the router every time the internet is dodgy. (Terrible ISP)  So sometimes when I come home, all my ports are no longer forwarded, and I have a ton of forwarded ports.  I've went so far as to but duct tape over the little slot the reset button is down or fill it w/ hot glue.

This is Comic Sans.

I know I do that, but my router is dodgy when it comes to wifi (wired is fine) and after a restart it's fine again   Could she be confusing the reset button to a restart button?

EDIT: wait nevermind, the reset button is in a pin sized hole

Reset or restart? I have to restart my router reasonably often and it doesn't change anything (although sometimes the IP changes which is annoying but can be worked around fairly easily).

I'm glad you're now not one of the blind hatred of Apple people. I love Apple products and I hate it when people are like ERG SPECS FER YER DOLLER MAYEN. Yeah, go ahead and tell me you can find an All-in-one with a 5k screen...

But hey, you can make the switch if you have the money and like the OS enough.

That's funny. I had nothing against Macs until I tried an iMac at a friends house.

I don't think people tend to hate on Apple so much, they hate more on the people who blindly follow Apple and the fact that Apple encourages this behaviour. Well that's how I see it anyway.

yeah, never heard a sane person say #APPLEMASTERRACE cuz then there's a problem. I don't really like iOS but I encourage Apple for making a small phone (minus the 6 plus) because women tend to have issues with putting phones in their usually non-existent pockets and have smaller hands.

As somebody who has smaller hands (for a guy), the 5s and even the basic 6 are nicely sized.

I had the opposite happen to me... I used to want a mac for its looks and ease of use... Then I got to go hands on for a whole year... It's just not the best suited machine for me...

If only someone designs a case like that on the old mac pro... but with stainless steel instead of aluminum...

honestly people thinking that the correct way of installing thermal paste is to put a small dot of tim in the middle of the cpu, but the reality is that the heat is spreaded across the entire surface of the cpu (its called heatspreader for a reason). the ammount of heat in the edges is equal to the ammount of heat in the middle.... or peoplw thinking that amd cpus dont work with nvidia gpus or that intel cpua dont work with amd gpus

I'm under the impression that the paste will melt and spred over the heat sink and that you don't apply it over the whole sink so that the paste will not melt over the edges.

Umm... About that CPU part.. You are supposed to put a small dot (about the size of a piece of rice) in the middle and spread it with the heatspreader as you put the cooler on..

@Lord Pantaloons had a run in of this problem when he opened up his EVGA cooler..

Sequentially they might be, except most of the time randoms are more important which SSD's pawn HDD's in...

They're not. Not even sequentially. I've benched my SSD and my hard drives. No contest between the two.
