Experiences with non-techies

so this one time I was hanging out with my friend who is the manager at a tech shop by where I live and a girl comes in and buys a 2tb hard drive. we let her know that we install hard drives for $1 (the cost of the sata cable we use) and she says "just because I am a woman does not mean I cant work on computers" and leaves in a huff.

two days later she comes back in saying that the HDD is not working so we take the computer in to look at it,

we open it and the HDD is nowhere to be seen,

so we ask her where it is. and it turns out that she scanned it and put the scanned image on her desktop to install the drive.

and to top that off she threw away the drive she paid almost $200 for and she wanted us to give her a new one.

I too would like to know more.

How hard did you laugh?

The latest for me, is my mother calling me to ask why her computer mouse doesn't work (while shouting that it's a piece of crap and what not), when I get there, I find she managed to plug the USB mouse in the Ethernet port of her laptop.. Couldn't help facepalming in front of her.
How did she manage that?

One day, me and my friends decided to make a joke with our English teacher. She was out for a break. When she came back, we told her not to connect her charger to the power outlet. We told her that her laptop was going to blow if she plugged it in, because we changed the red cable with the black cable in the outlet. And then she went to the other side of the room and she plugged it there :D We did not change the cables, but she believed us. XD

Not an experience but it's related: http://xkcd.com/627/

One time a guy asked me "If you know so much about computers - what is the electrical resistance to a intel processor? I you don't know the answer you don't know anything." I laughed so hard. :DDD

Then someone asked me: "Put android on my nokia 5320 xpressmusic please."

My teacher uses Windows Media Player - she shows us a video of bees then to close it she presses go to library and then only closes the window.

My grandma didn't shut her monitor off before the pc had turned off - she thought if she powered off the monitor the pc wouldn't work again next time. :D At least i explained how things work to her.

With the going to library before closing thing; does she use a Mac? I know my Mac will reopen whichever folder I last had open which can be annoying and I often find myself going to home before closing stuff on windows because of this..

I don't really have an example except that when I go to the apple store with my gf, because her phone broke again, I would look around for the noobie and mess with him/her. I would also like to add that I do not think some of the employees should be called geniuses lol. Anyone else enjoy doing this?
Yeah my friend spent good money on his education, but I swear they taught him some stupid things. lol Anyway I just think I have a soft spot for apple, because of how much I dislike their products lol. Oh and geek squad is another good one, even though I tried to get a job lol.

To my good friends, I am God of computing.

My friend's mom actually paid me 50 bucks to fix their loose cable, thrice.

Many don't believe me when I told them I built a PC.

I should never have mentioned the term 'hardware porn' among them.

Some think I have no life and no future.

To most adults, I am a spoilt brat.

Lol yeah anyone that knows me thinks I am God of computing, because I finally built a PC. If only building one was as hard as a lot of people think. XD

My whole family is pretty non-tech savvy. Whenever a computer problem arises, they wait until i come back from college for a weekend or break so that I can fix it. My dad needs help sending email. Luckily he doesn't have to that often. He still can't tell the difference between internet browser tabs and open programs shown in the taskbar. My mom and sister were shocked when I told them I put together my first DIY built rig in a few hours one night.

My sister’s old laptop had 3 free antiviruses installed on it for years. She never treated it right, always jostling it around, laying it on her bed sheets for hours at a time. While I had many hard drive problems with the exact same model of laptop, it almost always sat on a desk elevated from the surface, she never had any problems with her hard drive. I had to be the one to point out to her that her charger cable needed to be replaced when the rubber coating had worn away and the metal cable was exposed and fraying.

i once had to explain to a representative from my isp on the phone that i was supposed to have 3 ip addresses available. this was pretty early in the cable modem days (2000) but i wanted access to the other ip adresses so i could host a game server on one, and the home network on the other. once i explained it, and pointed out the parts of the contract that said it existed (i don't know why they turned off my extra ip's in the first place, i had already been using them) my other ips were turned on, and they even gave me a month of free basic cable (we were already using basic cable and more, so they reduced the cost for a month). it wasn't the fastest in the world, but i hosted a tribes1 duel tournament server for 2 years using that connection, and back then 12 people under 100 ping was awesome.

EDIT: so old that i was hosting that server on a 200mhz mmx pentium with 128mb of memory, and that was more memory than i needed, and it was 72pin. the board had 4 72pin sockets and 2 128pin sdram sockets. i even ran the board on an AT psu, not even atx. OLLLLLDDDDD.
