Experiences with non-techies

Also, schools are on a budget.

I think even the computer that we put stuff on for laser cutting had like 450 gigs of ssd. That was its sole purpose. Sending files.

My college was just a standard college here in the UK, so I assume that the government have a contract with Dell who supplied pretty much all of the PC's there

The other day I was talking to a self-proclaimed techie. He said his laptop was garbage and that it can't run Minecraft.

Me: What's your laptop's specs?

Friend: It has an Intel i3 and integrated graphics.

Me: How much RAM does your laptop have?

Friend: 1TB.

Me: *facepalms*

I had to buy this for school. The reccomended one was some crappy Inspiron. No, thanks.

For a chromebook that's a lot

For a regular school PC, it's okay in size although on the bleeding edge definitely

"Just bring the computer in"

- User brings in the computer screen.

- User brings in the external hard drive.

- User brings in just the docking station.

- User brings everything but the computer.

Some external hard drives are the same size as the MacMini, and I could see maybe confusing that.

The "brings in just the monitor" happened more than once.

Secretary asks me to look at her laptop for her, been running poorly. Sure bring it in with the power supply brick. Brings in laptop w/out power supply 'I don't know what the power supply is, I'll call you from home so you can tell me what to look for'. Ok fine. She calls that evening and after about 20 minutes on the phone she gives up and says 'I'll just bring in all the extra parts'. Brings me the WHOLE box it came in, the mouse, the manuals, the discs, everything. EXCEPT the power supply. 3rd times the charm, she brings in the power supply finally 'Oh I didn't know that's what this did, I though this was for the internet'. Yes, she'd been plugging the laptop into power, then turning it on, thinking it had to be connected to that to internet. Also explains why she kept saying she didn't understand why ATT told her she had wireless internet.

Aunt is watching a friends kid (like a 6-7 year old), I'm on my computer and he comes back starts looking at my computer. I had a Phanteks p400s at the time and I was like "just don't put your hand on the glass" so naturally the first thing he does is plant his whole hand on the middle of the panel. Man I hate little kids

Having worked in IT for the last 20 years I have seen all sorts. One I actually found was quite upsetting. This was a lady on one of our sites who had spent 7 years of her career documenting the staff and military personnel who had worked or trained there. Quite a few had died in various conflicts or for other reasons. One morning her computer would not start. You guessed it, the hard drive had failed and she had no backups. She was in tears, almost hysterically. What made it more frustrating was the machine had automated backups. All she had to do was pop a daily DDS tape (yes, this was a while ago) in her machine and all would have been good. Unfortunately nobody had told her, a simple lack of training.

In the end a data recovery firm managed to recover a lot of her stuff, but it cost not only financially but a lot of heartache.

When you have to explain to a family member that Free Wi-Fi is unsecure.......

Also, when you try to share a password for a VPN with them through a password manager and they really don't get it.......... So much pain.

In the end I managed to get them to download the VPN app and login after a lot of pain and misery.

Judge a product on its own merits AND the company that made it.

I have seen a lot of strange things, also because I am the tech support guy for my friends and family. I got asked "Did you switch off the internet?" (when I had to restart the router), struggled with people who didn't get the difference between a browser's address bar and the (Google) search bar. I also had to switch a CMOS battery once because the computer's owner always unplugged the PC after shutdown and didn't use it for extended periods of time.

I got a good one here boys. Its short, but should be funny.

My neighbor isn't the smartest, but she's a fellow Missourian and probably one of my closer family friends. She stops in my work (UPS Store, she was shipping a package) and we chat while I enter info. Nothing all too interesting, but I asked if her husband had came across any abandoned PC's or the like at his work (Storage facility). She says no, but that she has a couple laptops for me. One of them was an "Apple laptop" that doesn't turn on. She says if I can fix it I can have it, so I go aight, worse case scenario I can sell it as spares.

This is a 2014 Macbook Air, which has the power button next to volume up on the keyboard.

I take it apart, clean the dust bunnies out (needed, it was filthy), and press the power button for 2 seconds (as you need to do on these. If you just tap it it wont turn on.)

It turns on no problem. Dead silent, just as it should be.

I was expecting water damage, as this woman quite literally has a liquor stores worth of booze in her house (I am her dog sitter as well. I do take a sip sometimes). This laptop is also often left outside on her patio or under the awning by her pool.

But nope, got a free Macbook Air and 2 other laptops to clean up and sell off. Feelsgoodman
