BY ALEX OSBORNValve boss Gabe Newell recently shared his thoughts on the future of the Half-Life franchise, and how the company he co-founded many years ago has evolved into a service platform as it shifts away from game development.


During an interview with Geoff Keighley in a one-off podcast called GameSlice (viaPolygon), Newell was asked whether or not fans will ever see a proper Half-Life 3. Newell replied: "The only reason we'd go back and do like a super classic kind of product is if a whole bunch of people just internally at Valve said they wanted to do it and had a reasonable explanation for why [they did]."



"But you know if you want to do another Half-Life game and you want to ignore everything we've learned in shipping Portal 2 and in shipping all the updates on the multiplayer side, that seems like a bad choice," Newell continued. "So we'll keep moving forward. But that doesn't necessarily always mean what people are worried that it might mean."

They are making it but he doesn't want people to get too hyped because he is adding something with multiplayer. He said all games from now on should be multiplayer no matter what they are. Valve seems to have a hard time counting pass two, half life 2, left four dead 2, portal 2, Dota 2, tf2, 


Valve will makes money either way, but they are rememberd for their wonderful games, games that don't have great graphics but wonderful gameplay.  Steam was created to help update cs, they need to remember thier roots and give the pc gamer what they want hl3, not some random steam box or some weird controller or some steaming box or a VR headset. Valve is great at making games they need to pursue that. I'm not saying we don't want all valve hardware ideas just that valve makes great games and they should make that their priority.

Duke Nukem Forever was passed around by four different development studios in various states of financial ruin, shifted game engines and design philosophies several times, and was involved in legal disputes. There's an awful lot more involved in a big game failing than just a long development period.


 


If Valve are working on Half-life 3, they are doing so with a singular team of very good developers using their own game engine. They likely would have a near-bottomless budget, and as Valve is not publicly traded they do not have to report to shareholders. They have the money, the time, and the creative talent to announce Half-life 3 whenever they believe it's amazing enough to announce.


 


Valve is not going to announce a product like this in some obscure interview.
