1440p or 4K?

VolkA
Go to solution Solved by VolkA,

Finally decided to go for 4K monitor. Just realized my desk doesn't have space to support 3 x monitor. Therefore, it's 4K monitor now. Haha. Just went to purchase another r9 290x. Now having crossfire, hopefully will be able to get decent playable fps while gaming on 4K monitor.

Lastly, thank you guys for all the advise and help. :)

on max settings?

Yup. Both on max settings. Just without AA as I heard from somewhere that 4K aa not much point. Not really sure on that but so far, everything turns out quite good. Just that Civ5 is making my GPU really really hot. like 80C ish.

From what distance are you looking at your screen?

For Civ5 is the furthest I could go to using the mouse scroll wheel. If I go nearer, I realized I get higher FPS than those.

I guess you didn't get me. Your view distance. How far away are you from the monitor itself? 2 feet? 3 feet? More?

For a 27" monitor, you will benefit from 4K, only if you are watching your monitor at closer than 2 feet (60cm), which is a bit too close... I bet, even if you put the resolution at 1440p, you won't see a difference if you are 3 or more feet away from your monitor.

Oh ok. I'm actually not so sure on the distance. Roughly less than 60cm? I'm just assuming.

Yeah, 1 foot ~ 30cm. In your case, you need it, but to tell ya, i think you should have some glasses. It's not really nice up that close...

Impressive on those fps figures. crank up the AA and see how much it hits the fps.

Perhaps its time i replaced my mobo and cpu...  or perhaps vsync was capping my fps..

I know its bad for my eyes. But it's just that I'm used to it. As well as the position of my table and all those ... :(

Yah, might on the AA to see how much it affects the FPS. But seriously, does AA helps in 4K? I really remember I read somewhere that aa won't do much / anything when on 4K. For now (just 1 day), I'm pretty happy with the purchase. Cost me 565 USD the monitor (after using google to convert the currency). Will try to update here again after a week or two.

Not sure if AA will help on 4k at all, I was just wondering how it compared to my rig :D

It helps, but past 2x MSAA is redundant imo. I usually don't even use AA in the first place because I cannot notice the aliasing unless I'm specifically looking for it (at 28").
