1440p or 4K?

VolkA
Go to solution Solved by VolkA,

Finally decided to go for 4K monitor. Just realized my desk doesn't have space to support 3 x monitor. Therefore, it's 4K monitor now. Haha. Just went to purchase another r9 290x. Now having crossfire, hopefully will be able to get decent playable fps while gaming on 4K monitor.

Lastly, thank you guys for all the advise and help. :)

But how About Starcraft II, Witcher II, CIV 5, and Bioshock Infinite.  Usually stick with allot of RTS, at least until Star Citizen and hopefully Crowfall are released.

I will try and post Civ 5 tomorrow.

you can see the models and textures let it down quite badly, also it doesn't seem to show the cursor on the screen shot, but it is quite small however it is one game that a small cursor hasn't affected me very much.

Do you really think they are close?  I guess if you just compare price, they are close.  The specs the monitors have are very different.  The Acer Xb280hk is a 4K, 60hz, G-sync, with a TN panel $800.  The soon to be released Acer Xb270hu is a 1440p, 144hz, G-sync, with a IPS panel, also $800.

Sorry for comparing Acer and G-snyc.  I guess your for AMD, and want Free-sync.  Then you can get the, also soon to be released Acer Xg270hu, 1440p, 144hz, Free-sync, with TN panel $500. (these are US prices)

I would get a 1440p monitor, over a 4K.  Have you ever been burned by trying dual GPU's on a game and only a single GPU works?  That has happened to me because of driver support.

Well, when i say close, it's like price of the monitor in my country. Prices are like USD 10 - 100 different after converting to USD. Before I started building my PC, I already decide on dual GPU. That's why the selection of MOBO and PSU (in my signature).

Have you considered a 1440p 144hz monitor?

I think it cost more (like as in much much more about USD 200 or so in my country) for the 1440p 144hz. I basically doesn't play much first person shooting, actually none at the moment. I'm more towards RTS or even turn based game and some dota 2. So I was thinking the 144hz doesn't really benefit much to me.

Awesome. Some pic on Civ 5 would be great as I'm also playing that game. Thanks man.

I tried Civ5 at max with 8x MSAA

The frame rate was really low between 8-15, it was pretty hard to play.

Then I spotted some of the changes I made earlier had knocked out the SLI configuration setting, I enabled this and FPS jumped to 50-60

I was impressed that 1x980 did 8-15 fps but 2x980 managed 50-60fps, Perhaps its to do with the separation of the PhysX computations but i wouldn't have expected more than double so 16-30 fps

However here are what you care about... Pictures

I found the text a bit hard to read at times as it was quite small, but other than that I thought it was enjoyable in 4k

He cant play at 4k but can downscale but it will look burry

Maybe you cant play 4k... for personal reasons.

He could however. I also could play everything i want on 4k with a single video card. And if i wanted to waste my time with incredibly bad games like crysis3 i could run it on medium anyway.

Maybe future games will be optimized for it, but I am still not sold.  I still have a year for them to impress me before my next build.  Though, the screenshots did look good.  Thanks for the help.

Also a question I was thinking on this topic:

Does a 4k 60Hz display with freesync equal a 1440p 144Hz display in terms of smothness and scutter / tearing?

If yes wouldnt it be better to go for the higher resolution 4k with lower frequency, free-sync, but higher DPI?

My beast (PC):

I will stick to this: 109~ dpi. I don't want things to be too small.

More than 27" is too large for me.

1440p it is.

I would consider 4K if I wanted a larger monitor.

This is how I narrow things down to a conclusion.

But the thing is 1440p in my country cost more or less same as 4K. I just checked, the different is less than 50USD. So not much saving actually. if I go 3 x 1080p is actually cheaper than either 4K or 1440p.

personally I tihnk the best option fora  monitor at the moment is a 144hz 1440p IPS freesync/gysync screen

I have to admit I replaced 2 old 1080s for my 4ks and for gaming it hasnt made much difference.

There is nothing wrong with 3x 1080, or perhaps a 1440/4k in the middle with a 1080 either side...

Dont really play racing or flight. More on Dota 2, Civ5, XCOM and so on. 144hz 1440p ips cost like 200USD more than 4K over here. :( too expensive and to me, maybe not that worth it 144hz.

i was also thinking maybe 4K middle and 1080 by the side. But then won't have the surround gaming effect and is too expensive for my budget. Basically I come down to either just buy 1 4K monitor and use my current 27" 1080 monitor by the side (total of 2 monitor) but not surround gaming, or 3 x 1080 monitor to have the surround effect. :(

Guys, the most difficult question is between these 2 monitors:

Asus PG27AQ vs Acer XB270HU

4k. vs. 1440p

6ms. vs. 4ms

10-bit IPS. vs. 8-bit IPS

60hz. vs. 144Hz

G-sync. G-sync (on both)

So which one would you chose considering my specs in my sig?

Just done with the 4K monitor. So far only tried playing Dota 2 at all settings max out. Average FPS is around 100 or so. When there is a war (as in 5 vs 5 within screen), the FPS will drop to 70ish and once in a while 69 or so. So far this is what I tested. Will test other games soon. :)

Dota 2 - 70ish to 100ish FPS

Civ 5 - 90ish to 100ish FPS
