Suggest me a good video editing software

I am confused with many different video editing softwares.

My goal is to do editing and animations on a small documentary project for my class.

Also if you guys can suggest free tutorials alongside the program for beginners.

Premier is mainly to edit clips of videos

Adobe after effects can also do that not as well but has a giant range of effects and things you can to video

After effects usually has the better stuff available on the nets not vegas

Yes, Premiere Pro is for editing. After effect though is to edit the video even better if Premiere Pro can't handle it (but don't do editing in After effect.... Use After Effect to make better effect).

Adobe Premiere is the best thing to use, its pretty simple for the most part. Just download it from Adobe's website and use the trial version, or crack it.

But Vegas is easier for a single time mini project

Yes, Premiere Pro is for editing. After effect though is to edit the video even better if Premiere Pro can't handle it (but don't do editing in After effect.... Use After Effect to make better effect).

Like super slow motion, lighting, etc., it's better to use After Effects. Using just video editing software might not work as good as After Effects, when you're trying to do super slow motion for example, it can be laggy when using original video editing software, by using After Effects you can do that (but need a lot of effort to make a great effect though).

Premiere is for editing, that is, cutting clips, organizing them, making your video as a whole.

 

After Effects is for visual effects, so you take an individual clip you've cut up in Premiere, and then you apply effects to it. This can, quite literally, be anything, from some simple color correction, to generating particles, to animating a drawing.

 

The confusion comes from the fact that Premiere also has some effects. In fact, many overlap between the two programs. I would say as a rule of thumb, if you want to generate anything new (so stuff you can't film), remove something from your footage, or animate something, then you need to use after effects.

 

Some of the best tutorials for After Effects can be found at videocopilot.net. It can seem a little overwhelming, but just look for some effect you want to learn and get going. You'll start to pick it up over time.

 

Of course, if you need any specific help, I can help you as well. Been doing the video editing and effects for several years now. Got a few skills under my belt.
