What Got You Into Computers?

Derykey

Well you know, PC gaming. Got into that when I wanted to play old PS2 games that I didn't have anymore. Played them on PC and converted.

I was quite literally born into it, both my parents have programmer-mathematician degrees, so we always had computers, and of course we always had a few games on them. Basically I learnt to use DOS before i was able read or write :D

That's awesome!

I'm here to learn and help others!

one day i decided to pop open a computer to see how it worked to my fascination it was actually quite simple a bunch of wires going to a large circuit board.

the pc i obtained from a nearby computer shop creatively named "Computershop" as it was DOA they decided to give the "DOA" Compaq presario SG3500UK to me this had a cooked XFX Geforce 250x and a dead 350w psu as the customer had brought it in for a repair/replacement psu. I replaced the dead psu and attempted to boot it but no avail the 250x is toasted and no fix... so i took the full pc to another nearby computer shop and they charged me £20 just for diagnosis and all they had to say was "the psu is dead" i knew it wasnt so i busted out the Almighty Google and googled why it wasnt working. "no results found" after removing the gpu and its cooler i noticed that the card had cooked RAM and MANY scorch marks around and on the GPU, the pc recently died due to the drive corrupting windows and BSODing every time i booted. I had that pc for 2 years and its specs were :

512MB Ram (SAMSUNG)

WD Caviar SE 160GB

Intel pentium D  (dual core 2.4GHz)

Then i found Linus. . . . .

the new pc rised from the ashes and is scoring around 1114.7 in pcmark (unknown version)

I also have a BBC Micro B+ basic computer that still works to this date from a long lifes work as a school computer datestamped as 1981 vintage!

(older than me!)

When i was younger i would dismantle whatever i could get my hands on (VCRs, DVD players, etc.) eventually this progressed to old computers that i would buy at a local charity auction that happened every month. They were usually Pentium 1s or 2s ran Windows 98 and were outdated and slow (this was 2006) eventually i started swapping components around between the systems and making systems that i thought to be dead function again. The rest, as they say, is history

I know the feeling. That's one of the reasons my dad always bought me LEGO toys, which I also keep to this day.

He always worried I would mess with electric stuff, but for some reason didn't care less if I ate by mistake a LEGO piece lol. Not sure which part was more dangerous back then.  :D

I Saw mu uncles gaming PC and saw him playing fallout 3 on it and i just chanted i want i want over and over again in my head. So i did like a ton of research (more than i ever did for school lol :P) and by then i knew quite a bit about pcs and its really one of my only interests i kept longer than a month. Then when my father finally decided sure kid you can have it my uncle gave my dad a completely different and unbalanced build without my knowledge. But whatever i still love my rig. Since then i just kinda subscribed o a bunch of tech channels and there it is i understand just about anything about computers.

Main PC |CPU - i7-6700k|GPU - R9 290x tri-x 4gb|RAM - 16gb ddr4|MOBO - MSI z170 - A PRO|HDD - WD 1TB/240gb Sandisk |PSU - 700w Raidmax

Laptop |CPU - i7 4720hq|GPU - 960m 2gb|Ram - 8gb 2x4|Model - y50-70 Touch|SSD - 240gb Patriot drive|Display - 1920x1080 IPS touch

My dad used to repair phones & xbox's and my uncle was until recently the european systems manager for Heinz, but then it got took over by another company and he was made redundant :(

That along with the fact that my first computer (many years ago) broke down so i tried to repair it..

So it was probably a combination of all of these things that got me interested in computing..

I got into watching video games on YouTube and wanted to play the games myself, my family has only ever owned iMacs (kill me). So the only way I was going to get a gaming pc was if I built one myself so I taught myself and have been a part of the tech world ever since.

I'm an IB student.... please send help, I can't escape!

Asian kid growing up in the 90s.

If such a person does not absolutely know 100% everything to do with PCs and mobile phones, disown them. That's like the Asian equivalent of being mentally handicapped. I mean I only got B grades in everything and Tha makes me a dumb Asian.

Linus is my fetish.

I heard my friends say "water cooled PC" I did not know that was a thing so I went home to google it and it looked quite interesting. And that's how I got into PCs.

I'm not sure anything ever got me into computers because there was one in my family's home since the late 80s when I was a wee lad.   There has just always been one around.  It's be like saying, "What got you into socks?"   Well I've always had socks, too. :)

I made some big changes to my lifestyle/social situation and at the time was just working then going home to sleep then going back to work in an endless loop, it was starting to drive me a bit crazy until one of my colleagues suggested i buy a computer and World of Warcraft so i could come and play with him and a few others from work. That was the catalyst for me to transform into someone that partied way too much to a geeky recluse

I'm much happier and healthier this way though, in some ways becoming a nerd saved my life  :P

Shit like this and star citizen.

I see where the frontier of gaming is headed, and it's about to get a lot bigger if these awesome, large ass projects are successful. My hope is that they go big, and succeed, and like, a couple months later articles start coming out saying "massive drop off in console sales" or "it seems no one is playing online on consoles all of a sudden".

Probably won't happen soon, but I think it will eventually. If big crazy projects like this start being successful, it will make at least a portion of console gamers say "hey.....what's going on over here?.....that looks fun".

I don't really know, Computers just really came second nature for me and it was pretty easy for me to learn about them. As well, after growing up a bit, I started to see the world of technology and knew that I would need good computer skills to get a good job so that pushed it a little bit, its mostly the second nature thing that got me into them.

I love working with electronics, and I started talking apart old computers and trying to put them back together, or frakensteining computer parts together.  Planning on going to college for computer engineering now actually.

What really got me into computers - building one. I'm now itching to build another, so I cope with this by modding my PC, opening up older ones, etc.

Also because I work in a computer retailer. Using computers has always been something I had done, but for the behind the scenes, I still have a lot to catch up on. Got the job because after graduation, I was too depressed to look for a job - no effort. When I've finally recovered enough, most jobs that are related to my undergrad economics degree aren't hiring, but retailers were.

In the early 90's my Grandfather gave my Mom a PC, I was fascinated by it... didn't have internet until around 97 then I started PC gaming a few years later.

I'm disabled and honestly, it's my only way of communication with the outside world, I learned how to spell and read with my PC.

Always wanted to learn how to build PC's but I wasn't confident I was intelligent enough, fast forward to 2009 and my friend Bradley from Australia talked me into it.

I was tired of my computer not being able to play the games I wanted to play, so I youtubed build good computer and got tek syndicate's $500 build.

I saved up money from chirstmas and bought my first computer, which is good because my laptop died. My computer continued to keep me afloat after I got kicked out as I took random writing jobs on the internet.

i love my computer

Way back in Kindergarten, the "leader" had this old ass PC (back in 98-99, in my optic it's old ass) We just used it to play small games on. Then i got an old PC (some P3 thingy) which i put up myself and installed windows 98 on (very proud 6 year old in 2002) Then i bought some P4 based 1gb ram machine i played CSS on (can't remember the videocard) i used that until 2010 when i got a laptop with i3-330m and 5670HD. Then i bought a Core 2 Duo machine with a 9800GT, and upgraded for a 560ti, then i realized it was kinda crap, so i went out and got a afterschool job and 6 months later i had a 4670K 8gb RAM and a 780. It has been altered but the 4670K is still the heart of my PC, along with it's new best friend Mr. Strix980 :D
